통합적인 언어능력 평가를 위한 새로운 접근

Abstract

Recently, the number of those who are eager to learn English with somewhat immediate need seems to increase amazingly. It appears to be true that scientific methods for testing seem to receive very little attention, while scientific methods for teaching have frequently been discussed in the filed of teaching English. Many test writers repeatedly point out the possibility of using Cloze Test as a reliable means of testing device in ESL/EFL classroom. In this paper, my major concern is confine to the Cloze Technique for testing overall language proficiency. All previous studies have shown the Cloze Procedure to have considerable validity as a test of the proficiency of non-native English speakers. In this respect, the Cloze procedure should be adopted as a good test to measure Korean students' English language proficiency as a foreign language. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlations between Cloze Test and other language proficiency tests, to discuss the validity of the Cloze Test with reference to the difficulty of each selected sentences used in this experiment, and to analyze the relative difficulty of parts of speech to be filled in each blank. The result of this study can be summarized as follows; Ⅰ. The Cloze Test has a high correlation (0.783) with other language proficiency test. This implies that Cloze Test can be used as an effective tool for measuring students' language proficiency. Ⅱ. It showed that the level of difficulty of the para-graphs is a very important factor which affects the validity and the reliability of the Cloze Test. Also, the high school students' group in the sample showed higher level of proficiency in their Cloze Test. This can mean that the Cloze Test was able to seize the difference in competence in English. Ⅲ. In the relative difficulty of parts of speech, students make more errors in the use of adjectives and adverbs than in nouns and demonstratives. In conclusion, the Cloze Test is not only simple in construction and administration but also a reliable testing device for the English proficiency. The results of the study seem to suggest the high validity of the Cloze Test, but the experiments have been done with such small number of subjects that more research on large scale should be undertaken to prove the reliability of the experiments.;최근들어 영어를 배우려고 하는 사람들의 수가 급증함에 따라 효과적인 영어학습과 평가에 대한 관심도 높아져 가고 있다. 지난 20년 동안 언어교수법에 대한 많은 연구와 새로운 방법들은 개발되었으나 과학적인 언어평가 방법에 관한 연구는 미흡한 상태이다. 외국어 교육에서 테스팅의 중요성은 크게는 이 나라의 외국어 교육정책에, 작게는 개별 교사의 수업현장에 영향을 준다는 점에서 재인식되어야 한다. 50년대 이후 많은 언어학자 및 교사들에 의하여 영어를 외국어로 배우는 학생들의 언어능력을 측정하는 도구로써의 Cloze Test의 적용 가능성에 대한 연구가 이루어져 왔다. 모든 선행 연구결과에 의하면 Cloze Test는 수험생들의 전반적인 언어능력을 평가하는 도구로 높은 타당도와 신뢰도를 가진다고 밝혀지고 있다. 무엇보다 Cloze Test가 지닌 가장 큰 장점은 작성시의 간편성과 테스트 결과의 비교적 높은 신뢰도에 있다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 문헌연구를 통해서 Cloze Test에 대한 전반적인 고찰을 한 후 Cloze Test와 영어 학기말고사 성적과의 상관도를 조사하여 우리나라 교육현장에서의 적용 가능성 여부를 알아보고자 하였다. 이 실험을 통한 연구결과는 다음과 같이 요약될 수 있다. 1. 영어 학기말고사 성적과 Cloze Test 간에는 약 0.783의 높은 상관관계가 있었다. 2. 공란에 들어갈 어휘의 품사에 따라 난이도가 달랐는데 관사나 명사 등이 쉬운 것으로 나타났으며 부사나 형용사 등이 비교적 어려운 것으로 나타났다. 3. 테스트에 쓰인 문장의 난이도에 따라 평가결과가 다르게 나타났으며 언어능력 수준이 높은 수험자에게 좀 더 타당하고 신뢰할만한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 본 연구에 의한 한 결론점은 Cloze Test가 학기말고사 성적과 높은 상관관계를 보이기 때문에 학급당 학생수가 많고 교사들의 업무량이 과다한 우리나라의 영어교육 현실에서 전반적 영어 능력을 측정하는 도구로 실용도가 높을 뿐 아니라 높은 신뢰도가 타당도를 가진 것으로 판단할 수 있다. 지금까지 본 연구에 쓰인 자료나 연구기간으로 보아 어떤 확고한 결론에 도달하기에는 아직 미숙한 것으로 여겨진다. 좀 더 풍부한 자료를 도달하기에는 아직 미숙한 것으로 여겨진다. 좀 더 풍부한 자료를 가지고 장기간에 걸친 연구가 계속되어야 할 것이다. 아울러 Cloze Test의 듣기능력 평가에의 적용 가능성 여부와 테스트를 풀어가는 도중 수험생들의 내부에서 일어나는 인식론적 과정에 대한 연구도 계속되어야 할 과제중의 하나이다.
