Abstract
Skinner argues that learning is the result of operant strength; therefore, habit formation in the target language based on the spoken form plays a key role and habit formation must be established at an automatic level only by practice, not by conscious efforts. Therefore the structural linguistics puts emphasis on the language performance. Empiricism, which is also basic to the structural linguistics, suggests that students should learn rules of grammar inductively by analogy. The audio-lingual method based on the structural linguistics is much used in the classrooms. It goes without saying that in the field of English education the teaching methods have made remarkable advancement based on the ideal linguistic theory. But along with such development towards desirable English education, the application of the language laboratory to the teaching of English has become the center of our interest since the latter half of 1960's. The essential function of the laboratory is to transmit the sound to the student so that he can hear it clearly and respond to the problems. He should hear his own voice as he speaks for comparison with the models heard on the tape. What is on the tape must be capable of providing the student with effective practice. The exercises presented in the laboratory for practice should be systematic and should follow the phonetic previously in the classroom. A language laboratory as just a means of foreign language teaching cannot be itself a method but a teacher's role is vital, and his good teaching affects the existence of the laboratory. A well-equipped installation cannot be replaced by an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher. Therefore, the laboratory does not let the teacher reduce the amount of work but he should program the materials to fit the class to arouse students' interest. Classroom instruction and language laboratory drills complement each other. Classroom time is now freed for prepairing students to use the laboratory intelligently; and afterwards, for making use of the student's newly acquired fluency through flexibility drills and cultural studies in the foreign language. In short, the laboratory helps the student gather the building blocks to use by creating situations analogus to those of the foreign country and asking the student to build some meaningful structures. The results of the careful and extended research of students of applied linguistics may now be put into effect in our schools by the use of the language laboratory. The language laboratory has become an integral part of modern foreign language instruction. Language teachers agree that instruction with laboratories is more effective in the development of audio-lingual skills than is instruction without laboratories.;한국의 영어교육은 주로 문법적인 분석과 번역에 의존해 왔다. 그리하여 대부분의 영어교사는 발음, 문법적 구조 그리고 어휘의 의미를 가르치고 나서 한국어로 번역해 주고 있다. 그 결과로써 학생들의 능력은 오랫동안 영어교육을 받아 왔으면서도 독해력에만 제한되어 왔다. 언어는 지금까지의 이러한 관념적인 표현보다는 구체적인 시청각적 경험에 의해 학습하는 것이 바람직하다. 이 효과적인 시청각 방법이 학습 환경에 도입된 것이 바로 어학실험실이다. 본 연구는 어학실험실에 관련된 여러 문헌을 통하여 어학실험실의 발달배경 관해 알아보고 특히 현재 우리나라 어학실험실 현황을 통하여 어학실험실의 교육적 효과 및 사용에 관해 고찰하였다. 또한 어학실험실 수업과 교실수업의 유기성에 대해 역점을 두고 어학실험실 수업의 단점을 보완하면서 외국어 교육에 효율성을 가져다 주는 방법도 연구하였다. 교실수업에서는 문법 구조와 문형의 기본 item만 간단히 연습하여 언어구조 · 어휘 · 문화적 배경에 대한 지식을 갖게 하며, 어학실험실에서의 활동을 원활히 하기 위한 준비를 하게 된다. 어학실험실에서는 교실에서 배운 것을 토대로 하여 많은 반복을 요하는 기본 item과 발음 연습을 듣고 따라하는 과정을 통해 자동적인 표현을 습관화하고 나아가 다음의 교실수업에서 배울 내용을 전개하기 위한 기반으로 이용된다. 즉 근대 외국어교육의 필수요인이 된 어학실험실이 그 자체가 지닌 여러 문제점들을 앞으로의 개설 방안을 통하여 현명한 사용이 이루어진다면 그 효용성은 지대할 것으로 본다.
