상담이론에 입각한 외국어 교수법

Abstract

Community Language Learning has been devised as an unconventional foreign language teaching method by Charles A. Curran. He adapted basic principles and procedures from the theories of counseling and psychothrapy to provide the humanistic contexts necessary for effective foreign language learning. In CLL Curran emphasizes the importance of human interaction in learning and tries to create a positive atmosphere in which the teacher and the learner can function together in a creative learning relationship. The purpose of this thesis is to describe Carl R. Rogers' ideas and assumptions on human behavior and the affective variables in Second Language Learning, to describe the procedures of CLL, and to discuss the characteristics of CLL. Inspired by Rogers' view of human learning Curran regards learners as a group in need of certain counseling, that is, foreign language learning. Realizing significant aspect of affective factors in language learning process, Curran claims Human Approach to Human Learning. The characteristics of CLL can be summarized as follows : 1. In CLL, learning is viewed as a unified, personal, and social experience that bestow the unique and special worth on the learner. The Whole Person is involved in learning while he is engaged in a concomitantly deep social experience that is filled with worth and meaning for him. The engagement with himself and one another is essential to the formation of an invested learning community. The incarnate-redemptive relationship engages people in a Whole Person sense. 2. In CLL, learning is viewed as an intensely personal experience. In an ordinary conversation, the central purpose of CLL is to share and communicate as persons. with others, the deep sense of belonging and sharing with others engaged with him in the learning process emerges as the learning process develops. This secure and deeply personal engagement and commitment together is called to "Learning is Persons." 3. The experience mutually fulfilling and convalidating for teachers and learner is important in Community Learning in CLL, the teacher and learners engage, and commit together for acquiring foreign language skills. This deeply personal engagement and commitment together came to be called "Community Language Learning.";인본주의 심리학과 내담자중심 상담이론에 영향을 받아 Curran은 Community Language Learning이라는 새로운 외국어교수법을 주창하였다. CLL에서는 학습에서의 정의적인 (affective) 요소에 중점을 두어 학습은 학생의 신체적, 정신적, 정의적인 면이 합일된 전인 (Whole Person)이 참여할 때 가장 효과적으로 이루어진다고 주장한다. 학생 개인이 적극적으로 학습에 참여할 때, 교사가 학생의 갈등이나 걱정을 이해하여 학생이 안전감을 가지고 학습에 임할 수 있도록 하며, 그리하여 학생은 학습공동체내에서 점차 소속감과 책임감을 가지게 된다. 교사와 학생간에 이러한 이해적인 관계가 성립되면 효과적인 학습이 가능해 진다는 것이다. 인간관계를 중시하는 상담의 방법을 교수방법에 적용한 CLL의 특징은 첫째, 신체, 정신, 정의적인 면이 합일된 전인이 교육에 참여하여 어떤 사물, 행위, 또는 다른 사람에게 가치를 부여하며, 점차 그 가치는 신념이나 태도 등으로 내재화하도록 하는 학습이라는 점이다. 둘째, 학생은 능동적이고 자율적으로 학습에 참여함으로써 지극히 개인적인 경험을 하게 되고 그리하여 단순한 지식이나 기능 획득 이상의 순수한 인간적인 학습을 한다는 점이다. 셋째, 공동체내에서 집단구성원 상호간에 이해하고 협동함으로써, 학습에서 유발되는 불안감을 해소하게 되어 더욱 효과적인 학습이 가능하다는 점이다. 고립적인 지식이 아닌 총체적인 인간에 대한 지도에 목적을 둔다는 의미에서 CLL의 특징은 한마디로 Human Approach to Human Learning이라고 할 수 있다. 인본주의적, 학생중심적, 상담이론적 특징을 가진 CLL은 적용상 많은 한계점은 있으나, 학습의 정의적인 요소에 중점을 두었다는 의미에서 큰 의의를 가진다. 그러므로, 학습에서 야기되는 불안감을 해소할 수 있는 학습환경을 창조하는 것이 매우 중요하다.
