- In Korean homes the questions of relationship between mother in laws and daughter in laws have been alive quite a along time. With the coming of modern age, which provided better educational and employment opportunities to womanhood brought about concurrent enhancement of the position of daughter in laws and entailed great changes in the structure in the relationship among members of the family; among them which has seen most significant change is that of mother-in-law and daughter-in-laws.
The purpose of this treatise lies in establishing ideal and desirable relationship between mother and daughter-in-laws in contemporary Korean homes by studying various questions actually happening.
In this connection, questions of changes in division of roles attributable to status of employment have been reviewed; also the questions of conflicts have been analyzed from the standpoints of personal factors as well as family environmental factors which consist of ages, standard of living, number of children, employing housemaid or not, husband's order among his brethren, period of cohabitation by mother-in-law and daughter-in-law and whether daughter-in-law having being employed or not.
To get the results for the objectives of this research, concerned literatures have been studied and surveys have been taken through the instruments of questionnaire on the subjects of 220 housewives selected randomly consisting partly of housewives cohabitating with their mother in laws while having employment and remainder of them consisting of housewives without any employments and with education above his schools.
And the results obtained through above mentioned process indicated the followings:
Firstly, the traditional role of mother in law shown by absolute hegemony in the demestic affairs now have been transformed into a dependent role of cooperation with daughter in law
Secondly, the topic which showed significant difference according to status of employment of daughter in law has been extent of engagement in house keeping work, baby sitting and scope of dependency in the old age by mother in law. In other words, those mother in laws who have daughter in laws having jobs were found as spending more time for house keeping works in comparison with those whose daughter in law are not and employed daughter-in-laws showed their inclination of entrusting their basies to the care their kinship rather than to social agenicies for this function. Moreover employed daughters in law expressed their desire to have economical independence and either to live separately or together with their mother in laws.
Thirdly it has been revealed that cohabitating mother in laws and daughter have experienced psychological conflicts mostly and the prevailing opinion was that if mother in law has economic capability such conflcits as described above might be much lessened.
Fourthly it has been shown that conflicts between mother and daughter in laws have been influenced more greatly by personal factors rather than family environmental ones. And variables which affect personal factors were found to be standard of living and status of employment; among low and high breakets conflicts induced by personal factors were shown as to be high and in cases when daughter in law get employments. Variable which affects family environmental factors was status of keeping housemaid. Then service of housemaid was used the conflicts eleciting from family environmental factor were found to be high.
Through the research as described in the above the writer reached conclusion that the conflicts between mother and daughter in laws in urban middle class homes have been found as relatively high nevertheless they were not yet reached to a state of seriousness, furehermore it has been revealed that personal factor is one of the most significant element having grenter influence than any other factors for the conflict.
