윌렘 드 쿠닝(Willem de Kooning)의 작품 세계 연구 : 주제의 변화에 따른 조형적 특성을 중심으로

Abstract

윌렘 드 쿠닝(Willem de Kooning, 1904～1997)은 미국의 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)작가이며, 구상성을 띤 추상 표현으로 독특한 회화 영역을 구축한, 액션 페인팅(Action Painting)의 대표적인 화가이다. 본 논문은 드 쿠닝의 작품 속에 공통적으로 흐르고 있는 조형적 특성을 전 생애에 걸친 삶과 환경의 변화, 그리고 작품 주제의 변화를 연관지어 다루고 있으며, 이러한 작품 주제의 분석을 통해서 다른 추상표현주의 화가들과 비교되는 그의 회화 양식이 어떻게 형성되었는가를 밝히고 있다. 본 연구의 제 Ⅱ장에서는 드 쿠닝 회화의 형성 배경과 조형적 특성을 다루고 있다. A절은 드 쿠닝 회화의 현대적인 배경인 추상표현주의를 개괄하며, 그 안에서 드 쿠닝이 형상을 버리지 않는 회화 표현 양식을 확립했음을 설명하고, B절에서는 드 쿠닝 작품에 흐르는 유럽 미술의 영향을 작가별로 -앵그르, 마티스, 수틴, 피카소, 미로등 - 분석하여, 그가 유럽 미술에서 새로운 추상 회화 창조의 길을 열고 있음을 보여주고 있다. C절은 현대적인 추상표현과 전통적인 구상표현을 화면 속에 공존시키는 드 쿠닝 회화의 조형적 특성에 대해 다루고 있다. 드 쿠닝은 추상과 구상의 공존 방법으로 도시와 전원 풍경 사이의 긴장감과 더불어 공간성과 평면성, 형상과 배경을 화면 속에 융화시켰다. Ⅲ장에서는 드 쿠닝의 예술적 생애를 크게 도시 생활 속의 분위기를 반영한 작품활동(1939～1963) 시기와 롱 아일랜드 전원에서의 전원풍의 작품(1963～1986)들로 나누어서 드 쿠닝의 작품과 주제의 시기별 흐름 및 조형적 특징 변화를 분석하여 그가 어떻게 형상이 암시되어 있는 화면이 장엄하게 유동하는듯 하고, 색채가 루벤스적인 우아함이 가득한 형태로 흐르는듯한, 대가들의 만년의 양식과 비교할 만한, 회고적이며 서정적인 추상 풍경에 도달하였는가를 밝힌다. 도시생활속의 작품활동 시기에 드 쿠닝은 도시의 삭막한 배경 속에서 내면적 균형을 포착하여 조직적이고 활기찬 도시공간을 추상표현주의 회화 속에서 재창조했다. 전원풍의 작품들 속에는 인물과 자연, 관능적 욕망과 자기 상실의 욕망이 다양한 배경 속에 용해되어 있다. 항상 ‘살아 있는 것에서의 형태감’을 추구하며 추상과 구상을 적절히 조화시켜 나아가던 드 쿠닝은 회상과 추억의 형상 속에서 풍경 추상을 화면에 표현했다. 결론적으로 본 논문은 삶의 변화와 주변 환경의 변화에 따라 드 쿠닝의 작품 주제가 변화될 뿐만 아니라, 그것이 그의 조형적인 발전에도 영향을 주었다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 본 논문의 의의는 드 쿠닝을 추상표현주의에만 관련시켰던 이제까지의 논문들과는 다르게 그의 생애와 작품 주제 및 조형적 특성을 밀접하게 연관시켜 다루었다는데 있다고 할 것이다. ; Willem de Kooning (1904 ～ 1997), an American artist of Abstract Expressionism, is a representative painter of Action Painting. He established the original style of painting by his abstract expression tinged with figurative imagery. This thesis is dealing with formative quality which commonly flow through in De Kooning s works relating the transition of his life and circumstances with the change of subject through his whole life. This thesis also clarifies the way that De Kooning s artistic style which distinguished from other abstract expressionists. In the second chapter, I deal with the formation background and formative character of De Kooning s paintings. Section A summarizes the Abstract Expressionism which is a modern background of De Kooning s paintings, and explains how he established his original expression style. Section B is showing De Kooning used European arts as basic substances for his creation of new abstract expression paintings by analyzing the impression of European arts that appears in De Kooning s works according to each artists - Angre, Mattise, Suteen,Picasso, Miro, etc. Section C is dealing with the formative quality of De Kooning which reconcile the modern abstract expression with the traditional figurative expression in a scene. De Kooning was spread out the art world of abstract and figurativeness by reconciling the concept of space and plane, form and background in a scene with tension between urban and pastoral environment. In the third chapter, I divided De Kooning s artistic life into two main part which a urban works period in New York(1939 ～ 1963) and a pastoral period in Long Island(1963 ～ 1986) and analyzed the periodical flows and formative quality s transition of De Kooning s works and subjects. According to the analysis, this chapter clarifies how he established his original rominiscent and lyrical abstract expression style that is worth comparing to the Old Masters styles with formative allusions lies inside of scene and sublime flow of scene and colors filled with grace that reminds Rubens. In the period of urban works, De Kooning recreated an organized active urban space in abstract expressionism paintings by catching an intimate proportions inside of dreary background of city. Figures and nature, erotic desire and self-forfeit desire are hid in the various backgrounds. De Kooning was always committed to the morphology of living things , properly reconciled abstract and figurativeness , and expressed the pastoral paintings in the states of remembrance and recollection. In conclusion, this thesis shows not only the subject of de Kooning s works was changed but also his formative development was impressed according to the transition of his life and circumstances. Therefore, this thesis is significant for the closely connected study of de Kooning s life, subjects of works and formative qualities different from existed theses those connect de Kooning with just abstract expressionism only.
