야니스 쿠넬리스의 작품에 나타난 조형적 특징과 상징성에 관한 연구

Abstract

현재 우리 나라 중등 및 고등 학생들의 현대 미술에 대한 이해는 중요하다. 그러나 이에 비해 교과과정이나 교육 현장에서의 다루어지는 내용은 부족한 실정이다. 이는 입시위주의 교육이라는 교육적 조건과 함께 이에 대한 예산 부족이 낳은 산물로 이를 극복하기 위한 교육 현장에 있어서의 보다 적극적인 노력이 필요하다. 이를 위한 한 방편으로 대표적인 작가들에 대한 미학적 혹은 사상적 분석은 교육적 관점에 있어서 현대미술을 이해하는데 도움이 될 것이며 이는 학생들의 창의력 증진에도 도움이 될 것이다. 따라서, 본 논문은 최근의 미술계를 주도하고 있는 작가들 중 하나인 야니스 쿠넬리스(Jannis Kounellis, 1936- )의 작품에 대한 연구를 통해 현대 미술에 대한 이해의 폭을 넓히는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 연구방법으로는 현재 나와 있는 관련 문헌 및 전시회의 참관과 전시팜플렛에 대한 조사를 통해 이루어지며, 그가 교수로 재직하고 있는 독일에서 발행된 참고자료들을 대상으로 하여 중점적으로 분석 연구한다. 본 논문의 내용은 쿠넬리스의 작품의 조형성과 상징성에 관한 연구를 한다. 쿠넬리스 작품의 조형성과 상징성에 관한 연구에 대한 결론은, 1960년 첫 번째 전시로부터 현재에 이르기까지 끊임없이 이원론적인 세계의 대립으로 일보 전진하는 변증법적 구조를 갖고 작업해 왔다. 쿠넬리스의 작업은 삶 자체를 작업으로 승화시킨다. 그가 사용하는 재료들은 삶의 주변에서 찾아볼 수 있는 하찮은 것들이나 작가에 의해 삶의 무게를 지닌 작가의 언어로 등장하게 된다. 대표적인 언어로 자주 등장하는 불은 타고 있는 상황과 다 타고난 뒤의 그을음의 상태로, 촛불, 알콜램프불, 가스불꽃으로 여러 가지의 삶을 상징한다. 그가 주로 사용하는 재료는 불 외에도 석탄 ,고대 그리스 조각상, 철판, 솜, 삼베 천, 돌등이 있는데 이것들은 각 재료들이 갖는 상징적인 의미보다는 그것과 이질적인 재료들과의 결합에 의해 그 의미를 파악 할 수 있다. 작업 초기에 그는 재료의 선택과 정치, 사회적인 의미에서 아르떼 뽀베라의 운동에 동참하였으나 그의 작업은 그 이상의 의미를 갖고 인류의 근본적인 문제제기를 한다. 그의 작품은 인간의 삶 속에서 역사적으로 이질적인 이미지를 가진 값 싼 재료들의 조합으로 다른 차원의 세계를 표현했고, 행위를 통한 시공간을 초월한 무한한 공간 개념을 도입한 전시를 하였음을 알 수 있다. 그의 작품세계에는, 특히 역사성을 중시하여서 기억, 자유를 나타내는 특징이 있고, 전통과 현대 모두에 통시적으로 대립되면서도 조화와 균형을 이루며 그의 예술을 통해 승화됨을 밝힐 수 있다는 점과 어떠한 형식에도 치우치지 않고 자신만의 새로운 언어를 사용하여 내면세계를 드러냄으로서 현대 미술에 새로운 시도를 하고 있다는 점에서 그의 작업의 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 이것은 모든 미술가들이 지향해야 하는 궁극적인 목적이며, 다양한 현대미술가들의 작업이 필연성과 가치를 지니게 되는 점이기도 하다. 쿠넬리스에 대한 첫 발표 논문이라는데 의의를 두고 있는 본 연구 논문은 보다 구체적인 미학적인 의의나 작가의 시대적 조건과의 인과 등에 있어서 많은 부족함을 안고 있다. 따라서, 앞으로 쿠넬리스의 작품세계에 대한 심도 있는 연구를 기대해 본다. ; This study is on the plastic and symbolistic characteristic of Jannis Kounellis(1936-) works. Konnellis has been worked with dialectical construction which is continuously advancing one step toward for the opposite side of dualism-like world. His most famous work is the one that he filled up the Roman exhibition spot with horses and wheat straws. In short, he made a certain exhibition area which had been a public place, and also the area that had been extremely separated from the daily living place to a stable. In this area, spectators feel the extension space of their lives and embarrassment The work of Kounellis is sublimes the life, itself. The materials that he often uses are the trifles that can be found easily around us and the writer s language that may possess the weight of life by the writer. Fire, which is the most often appearing material in his works, symbolizes various lives through the candlelight, alcohol-lamp and gas flame by the burning condition or the scorching condition after the burning. Other materials that he uses frequently except fire are the coal, ancient Greek sculpture, cotten, flax, cloth and stone. But, their meanings should be understood through the combination of those materials rather than the symbolic meanings of each materials. At the first period of his work, he co-participated in the movement of "Arete Povera" from a social point of view, however, his work means more than that, because he has been pointing out the fundamental problems of human-being. His work seems like a Tragic Drama , because each element appearing at his work is not the unified whole body, but the destroyed and extinct pieces. Nevertheless, those are respective and peculiar pieces that have been separated from the former lump. That is, those are the symbols of Freedom . In addition, they are the separated elements which have their own stories, and the individuals that have possibility of making another whole body. For this reason, his works are the narrative drama. To confronting the practicalism that gives all its value to the money or to protect the humanism, he advances in accordance with the concept of freedom. The artist, himself describes his working process as the story of Odyssey s Mediterranean Adventure. As a matter of fact, he actually displayed his work in the ship which had been really running around the Mediterranean. Thus, it really seems to show us the resurrection of Odyssey in this present world. His mythological, narrative and humanistic background is affected by Greece and Rome. The reason that Roma and Greece are the cultural root of ancient Europe, if his private experience becomes the sense of sight it turns up to the language which can be communicated through the world of entire Europe. Yet, the journey of Kounellis has not come to the end, in spite of continuous durability because of the insufficience that cannot be filled up, however, the insufficience becomes the manstring of his development. his works that are silently emphasizing his theory with the rythem or the implied meaning in a poetry is not the one that appearing and fading away depending on the tendency of the history but the one that will be remembered and read as a poem on the subject of fundamental expectation, romance and freedom of the human. Consequently, from the characteristic and importance of Kounellis work, the artist s personal experience of nostalgia accomplishes harmony and balance as well as opposes with tradition and the modern times at the same age. Also, it has been sublimed by the physical materials in his own way. The meaning of his work is that he has never been prejudiced to any formality, and the fact that he has indicated a new trial of the modern art through showing his internal world by using just the artist s own language.
