Abstract
The purpose of this case study was to look into a child's experience of participating in music therapy activities with his brother who has special needs. The participants were a five-year-old boy (hereinafter referred to as “child”) and his seven-year-old brother with Asperger's Syndrome (hereinafter referred to as “brother”). Phenomenological research analysis method was used for this research, with the purpose to know the essence of the experience that the child and his brother with special needs experienced together in music therapy with his brother who has Asperger's Syndrome. The collected data were analyzed by the steps of the phenomenological analysis method which Giorgi offered. The result derived 6 essence of experience, which are, 1) negative affects towards brother, 2) problem in the communication with brother, 3) ambivalent affects towards brother, 4) improvement in the relationship with brother, 5) positive affects towards the brother, and 6) experience of positive communication with brother. At the first half of the therapy program, the child experiences jealousy, anger, discontent, ignorance toward the brother and the absence of communication with brother. This experience brought negative affects towards brother and conflict and absence of communication with brother. However, as the music therapy sessions went on, at the last half of the therapy program, the child showed interest and consciousness of his brother, acceptance and recognition towards brother, positive affects toward brother, and positive communication with brother. In the end, the child and his brother experienced positive relationship in all of the latter part of music therapy sessions. As a result, the child experienced improvements in the relationship with brother, positive affects towards brother, and positive communication with brother. In conclusion, music therapy brought forward the positive affects of the child towards his brother and through music, play, and interaction, the child and his brother could take chance to communicate effectively and positively. By this result, it is concluded that a child and his brother with special needs can establish and improve positive relationship by participating in music activities. Also, the present study has special meaning and significance that it was focused on the brotherhood of a child and his brother with special needs. This kind of topic is not well documented in music therapy, so the present study may be useful as the ground research that may be used for the appropriate intervention and program for children with siblings with special needs.
