Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the usage of Korean negation sentence by Indonesian who stay in Korea. In this paper, Korean negative sentences which expressed by Indonesian are analysed. This investigation started from the assumption that even a Korean learner speaks well-formed Korean sentence, it doesn't mean that he or she express correctly in form and meaning together. In many cases Korean learners speak grammatically well-formed but inappropriate with their purpose or intention. Korean and Indonesian has different syntax structures and it influences on their Korean negation expression. It is difficult for Indonesian learners to understand syntax and semantic structure of Korean negation, and they are prone to make mistakes in its usage. One of the reason that there are difference not only in syntax structure but also in pragmatic as well as the difference of cultural background between Korean and Indonesian. The subject of this investigation consists of two parts. The first subject is to check the understanding of Korean negation systems by Indonesian learners. And the second research subject is to check and analyze the usage of Korean negation by Indonesian learners of Korean. For the first subject, a grammar understanding test provided to check how the Indonesian learners of Korean understand and use the Korean negation in writing. The questions consist of Korean lexical negation 'ebda', 'anida', 'moreda', and syntactic negation 'an', 'mot', 'malda'. For the second subject of this research, the subject matter is divided into four sub-matters as (1) the meaning of negation in L1 sentence and the learners expression in L2 matches or not, (2) the type of L2 negation forms used by learners to express L1 negation, (3) the type and causes of the errors in using Korean negation, and (4) how and what the learners express if they couldn't express L1 negation to Korean negation. For the second subject, the data are collected by the listening-speaking task. In this task, the learners listen L1 negation sentences and he or she speaks in Korean negation sentences immediately. To minimize the personal interpretation to given sentences, the same contextual or situation meaning also given to the task participants. The research object is Indonesian negation including (1) verbal and adjectival negation 'tidak', (2) noun, pronoun, numeral negation 'bukan', (3) imperative negation 'jangan', and also (4) negative adverbial 'belum', 'kurang', 'jarang', (5) negative modality adverbial as 'tidak sama sekali', 'tidak begitu', 'sedikitpun', 'siapapun', 'apapun'. The data are analyzed and classified into negation types and frequency of use is calculated. Also the learners errors have been described per type and some of them compared with principles in VanPatten(2007). The result of analysis negation usage by Indonesian shows that, firstly in grammar understanding task, the learners made errors because they tend to transfer L1 negation system to L2, so verbal and adjectival negation 'an' are used in front of nouns. In syntactic negation expression, mostly negation 'an' used in wrong places. Indonesian hasn't single morpheme to express negation 'mot' in Korean. So, the usage of negation 'mot' is significant to know the learner's competence of Korean negation. The learners ability of understanding and ability of expression L2 shows different phenomena. In listening and speaking task occurred different phenomena than grammar understanding task. Firstly, the errors of using lexical negation 'ebda' hasn't occurred in listening and speaking task. But others occurred as well as in grammar understanding task. And when the learners listen L1 sentence but they don't know how to express L1 negation in L2, they usually use a form which has similar meaning with L1 negation. Also, the learner tend to avoid the complicated or difficult words and structure, so some expressed the L1 negation sentence in positive one in L2. Indonesian negation 'belum' is divided into 'an' and 'mot' in Korean negation usage. Except the advanced learners, most of the participants in this research couldn't express 'mot' negation correctly. The reason is not only L1 influence, but also they just focused on L1 negation form even the reason why they should use 'mot' negation given. Another Indonesian negation 'kurang' which has meaning of 'lack' or 'insufficiency' showed different phenomena. The learners haven't used one single negation as 'an', but the combination of 'an' and adverbial 'jogem', 'belro' etc. together. It means that the learner consider primary the meaning of L1 negation when they express negation in L2. In negation of modality usage, most of learners expressed the sentence which well-formed in L2 but inappropriate meaning L1 sentence. Modality system of Korean and Indonesian is different. In Indonesian, modality is expressed in lexical, but in Korean modality are expressed by lexical, syntactic, and idiomatic expression. In other words, negation of modality expression more difficult to Korean learners. Without understanding of Korean grammar the learners couldn't use the negation of modality correctly in form and meaning appropriately. In some cases, especially related the learners culture, they tend to interpreter L1 sentence based on their experience in their culture than what the sentence say. What this paper shows is that usage negation expression by Indonesian is influenced by L1 negation system. Especially the elementary and intermediate level learners made lots of L1 negation transfer to L2 by parsing. The interference of L1 in L2 has occurred not only in L2 structure but also in vocabulary and type of sentence used. In the conclusion, the significance of this thesis and suggestions given. It is thought that this thesis shall be meaningful in following aspects. Firstly, the result of this research partly put forward evidence to support the input process of the second language acquisition theory that called input process. Secondly, this research has contributed to developing negation education providing the result therefore basic reference materials. The results of this study might be applied to the Korean language education for foreigners, especially Indonesian, Malay and Brunei learners of Korean.
