Abstract
At the turn of 20th century, in the respect of the structure of population, the population of elderly people is sharply increasing due to a low birth ratio, improvement of Korean standard of living and advancement of medicine. Especially the population of the oldest old people who are older than 85 is now gradually increasing. According to the National Statistical Office(2006), elderly people who are older than 80 account for 0.2% of total population in 1960. And then it reached 1.0% in 2000. It was 5 times' increase. The ratio is expected to be 1.9% in 2010, 3.6% in 2020 and 14.5% in 2050.(Lee, Injung, 2009). Thus, the aim of this study is to understand the lives of elder women in 1910~1920 when the oldest old who are older than 85, were borne through directly listening to them. This method will affect directly understanding the lives of late elder women who are linked from the past to the present and will be helps of designing various welfare plans for them. This study started from collecting the oral historical materials from 1984 till 2004 when the magazines [Water from deep spring: Things we will never forget(the deep rooted trees)] was published translating the lives of late elderly women into oral historical material. We determine the span of the time from 1996 ~1998 and then selected 9 elderly women who have lived quite normal lives. The elderly women selected were mostly borne in 1910 ~ 1920 and we searched numerous data and the researches relating to that in order to understand the times when they lived. The study like this can not be quantified. So our study is based on qualitative method of study. The result, to sum it up, is as follows: First, understanding the economical poverty and the political mess caused by Japanese forceful colonial period and the Korean war in understanding the lives of late elderly women both directly and indirectly affect understanding their entire lives. Second, Economical situation in the home of married women before their marriage is very important element. Third, the lives as mother-in-laws where Confucianism is most emphasized is the lives in common among elderly women. Fourth, it is known that the lives as wives after marriage are no more important elements for the lives of the elderly women. Fifth, As most of the elderly women experiencing the head of families, the responsibilities towards their children affect most their accepting the sacrifices. Lastly, the lives as 'mother of ○○' affect the lives of elderly women most continuously and also affect the present. And to conclude, it is known that understanding the lives of late elderly women has close relevance to late elderly women's adapting themselves to the present because their lives in the past affect the present. Thus, understanding their lives through the official record of the historical literatures doesn't help designing proper policies for late elderly women for their adapting themselves to the present. Thus, it is necessary to understand them based on the real story they experienced rather than based on mere assumption that they could have lived like that.
