Today's adolescents live in a society flooded with a highly addictive mobile communications culture and popular and cyber cultures based on commercialism and materialism. Hence, these adolescents need to develop a healthy self-identity in order to appropriately adjust to the era in which they live. In right of this, it is worth considering how much attention today's schools are paying to the self-identity development of today's adolescents. After all, schools have the responsibility of encouraging and supporting adolescents, both inside and outside of the classroom, in ways conducive to their development of healthy self-identities, such as stimulating ambitions of self-development, provoking thoughts on life goals, and providing opportunities to survey the concrete measures that must be taken to achieve these goals. However, in the case of Korea, the unique educational landscape of the country has posed impediments to many adolescents' self-identity building process. The dominant academic culture which emphasizes solely university entrance exams provokes confusion in many students' self-identity, leading to the unfortunate reality of adolescents growing up into individuals who are neither able to act as assertive leaders in daily life nor establish appropriate relationships with others. These social circumstances in Korea's educational environment have thus provided the background for this study. The main contents of this paper are as follows. First, this paper defines the main concepts that constitute the foundation of self-identity during adolescence in order to discover the educational experiences necessary for establishing a healthy self-identity during adolescence, and analyzes the characteristics of adolescent self-identity changes from a development process perspective for purposes of exploring what types of educational experiences must be provided by schools to stimulate self-identity development. Second, in order to find out what changes students experience in their adolescent self-identities in the course of receiving the self-identity education constructed by this study, this study applied qualitative research methodology and examined the changes incurred by the students from an subjectivity and relatedness perspective. The environmental characteristics of schools and factors in the psychological development of students cannot possibly be discussed separately from the issue of the self identity of students. From this perspective, this paper examines existing debates over issues of self-identity related to school education. Two basic components of self-identity were then derived from this analysis: subjectivity, based on "I" the subjective self, and relatedness, based on "Me" the objective self. The subjective self "I" represents uniqueness, willingness, creativity, and decisiveness as the "assertive" self. The relational self "Me" represents capacity for self-evaluative reflection, the ideal self, collective sensitivities, and the feeling of belonging. From an educational perspective, a self-identity with these two elements combined has the following characteristics: first, it is formed through a process of struggle and constant self-innovation; second, the resulting combined self-identity is related to temporal continuity and spatial interaction; third, this combined self-identity, based on unique and diverse individual characteristics, expands the individual's relatedness through communities and mutual exchanges; fourth, the psychological and social aspects of self-identity are organically related to each other. Through the process of careful deliberation with current teachers and by taking into full consideration the developmental aspects of the self-identity building process, this study formulated an education course for building self-identity based on Glasser's choice theory. subjectivity in self-identity education refers to the development of an assertive actor who is aware of the fundamentals of life and her actions in it, and practices ownership as the planner of her life. Relatedness refers to the development of a reflective self-evaluator who understands his or her level of awareness of reality, has a receptive attitude towards others, and forms a life attitude that is capable of taking on a relationship-oriented perspective. This study examines the formation process of subjectivity and relatedness in the course of self-identity education based on choice theory using qualitative case study methodology. The study examined the changes in students' educational experiences during the course of self-identity formulation, within the research framework of subjectivity and relatedness, and through the analysis and collection of materials from surveys, in-depth interviews, and class observations. The creative elective activities formulated by the application of choice theory-based self-identity education was conducted on three levels (beginning, middle, and end) in the areas of subjectivity and relatedness. Initially, the participating students reported that they entered high school with the single abstract goal of "entering university", but after the experiences of self-identity education, they were able to slowly but surely escape from the irrational mentality of having to "always study well" and "be loved by everyone". In this regard, this study was able to achieve the following results. First, it discovered that human relationships, class attitude, lifestyle, and previous school environment all impacted a high school freshman's life in her new high school and thereby necessitated an adjustment period for the student to re-structure her notions of subjectivity and relatedness. Second, the establishment of independent goals in life during the process of forming subjectivity as part of the self-identity education helped students increase their feeling of independence and assertiveness. Third, the relationship-oriented perspective established during the relatedness formation process of the self-identity education, helped individuals overcome their existing self-focused relationships. Fourth, the formation process of subjectivity and relatedness in the self-identity education process occurred within the comprehensive viewpoint of reflective self-evaluation. Fifth, the combined subjectivity and relatedness in the creative elective activities helped the participating students select a relationship-oriented perspective and acquire a sense of ownership over life. On the basis of these results, it can be seen that there is a need to develop re-training programs for teachers for the purpose of realizing the importance of student self-identity. In addition, on-site research and active implementation that can stimulate self-identity formation in all educational activities are necessary. In this regard, to obtain even more meaningful results, other studies examining the degree of subjectivity and relatedness formed in future students should be conducted to complement this study.;상업성에 기반을 둔 대중문화와 사이버 문화, 중독성이 강한 이동통신 문화가 범람하는 시대를 살고 있는 청소년기 학생들에겐 건강한 ‘자아 정체성’을 바탕으로 이러한 시대적 환경을 적절히 대응해 나갈 수 있는 전인적인 성숙함이 그 어느 때보다 요구된다.
