Emily Dickinson의 애정시에 관한 고찰

Abstract

기혼한 40대의 목사인 Wadsworth와의 사랑은 Emily Dickinson에게 시적 영감을 불러 일으켜 그녀의 열정의 경험이 그녀의 애정시에 나타나고 있다. 그러나 그녀의 애정시를 볼 때 Wadsworth와의 사랑의 경험은 단지 하나의 희미한 추억의 영상일 뿐이었고 그 다음은 그녀 자신의 시적 상상력 속에서 점진되어 원숙 되어 갔다고 하겠다. 그리하여 그녀의 애정시에는 사랑하는 사람까지도 무시하는 배척과 거절이 있는 irony가 있다. 외적인 대상인 애인의 개념은 그녀의 내적인 감정보다는 큰 의미가 없으며 선택과 배척을 통해 그녀의 사랑은 오직 그녀 자신과 더불어 존재한다. Dickinson은 그녀가 관찰할 수 있었던 객관적인 세계에 그녀 자신의 창조의 세계를 세워 그녀가 상상할 수 있었던 모든 사랑의 경험을 Amherst에 있는 자기 고향집에서 밖의 세계와의 단절 속에 시로 표현해 쓰기 시작하였다. 그녀의 은둔의 원인은 정확하진 않지만 적어도 Wadsworth와의 이별이 한 원인이 되었다고 보인다. 그녀는 바깥 세계로부터 단절되어 돌아옴이 없는 철수의 시들을 그녀의 내면적인 경험을 토대로 하여 썼다. 그녀의 애정시 중에는 이성에 대한 매력이나 이성의 사랑에 대한 경동 혹은 욕망 등을 억제하는 일종의 금욕주의적인 심리적 양상을 띠고 있는 것도 있으나 대부분의 애정시는 열정이 인간의 영혼에 얼마나 깊은 영향을 끼치고 있는 가를 다루고 있다. 본 논문 연구의 목적은 Dickinson의 대표적인 애정시에 나타난 여러 양상들을 고찰해 봄에 있다. Dickinson의 시는 다른 사람에게 보이려는 목적보다는 그녀 자신의 내적 충돌을 표면화하는 과정에서 얻어진 것이다. Dickinson은 시적 영감 자체를 직감적 언어로 표현하는 데 치중한 나머지 시의 기교적 면보다는 환상의 현실화나 정확한 단어 선택에 우선권을 준 언어의 진실성과 관련된 시인이라고 할 수 있겠다.;Emily Dickinson got the inspiration of fancy through the fervent love with Wadsworth, a married clergyman of forties. Thus her love poems show of her experiences about passion. However, a close examination of her love poems show that her love with Wadsworth remains only as a faint reminiscence to her and gradually she begins to mature into her own imaginary fiction. We find many ironies of rejection and refusal which ignore even a lover in her love poems. The external concept of 'a lover' is less meaningful than her internal feeling, and by selection and rejection her love solely exists with herself. Dickinson set up her own creative world within the objective world that she was able to observe. Having no connection with the outside world, she began to compose poems as to all the experiences of love in the world of her imagination. The cause of her secluded life is not known exactly, but scholars presume that the separation from Wadsworth could be the one causes. She composed the poems of withdrawal which never appeared to the external world. Some of her love poems show a kind of psychological aspects of asceticism that suppress the yearning toward love or desire and the attraction of the other sex. Toward love on desire and the attraction of the other sex. But most love poems of her's deal with how much can a passion have a deep influence on the spirit of human being. The purpose of the study of this thesis is to examine some aspects of the representative love poems of Dickinson. Dickinson's poems were composed as self-expression of her own internal collision. But Dickinson always tried to express the inspiration itself with more exact words. It seems true that Dickinson somewhat neglected the technique of making poems. More attention was given actualization of the inspiration and a exact words.
