작품에 나타난 John Arden의 사회의식

Abstract

John Osborne이 Look Back in Anger를 발표한 1956년을 기점으로 영국 연극계에는 새로운 작가들에 의하여 보다 사회를 의식하는 풍조가 대두되었는데, 때마침 이 시기는 Haugary폭동과 Suez위기가 연이어 발생하여 일반인의 관심을 사회적 정치적 현실에로 향하게 하던 무렵이었다. 이렇듯 전환기에 접어든 영국 연극계에 John Osborne과 나란히 주목을 끄는 중요한 작가들이 속출하였는데 이 계열에서 매우 중요하다고 꼽혀지는 작가들로는 Arnold Wesker, Harold Pinter 그리고 John Arden이 있다. 이들중 십 년이 넘도록 계속하여 작품을 내놓고 있는 작가가 바로 John Arden이다. Arden은 영국의 어느 작가 못지않게 사회의식이 투철한 작가로 그의 극의 주제는 사회문제에 집약되어 있다. Live Like Pigs와 The Happy Haven은 사회복지제도의 맹점을 꿰뚫어보고 있고, Cyprus 사태가 문제시되고 있던 시기에 씌여진 Serjeant Musgrave's Dance는 반전을 절규하며, The Workhouse Donkey는 현대사회에 산재하는 관리들의 부정부패를 폭로하고 있다. Arden이 이러한 사회문제를 취급하는 태도는 모호하다. 그가 그려내는 인물에는 선인도, 악인도, 영웅도 없다. 그의 작품에는 항상 질서를 요구하는 세려고가 이를 따르기를 거부하고 사사로운 안일이나 이상을 추구하는 ‘Anarchy'가 대립을 이루고 있는데, 그는 이 두가지 입장중에 어느 쪽을 취하여 정당화시키는 법이 없고 시비의 판단을 관객에게 미루고 있기 때문에 그의 극을 처음 보는 사람에게는 당혹감을 느끼게 한다. Arden은 또한 사회의식 못지 않게 역사의식도 비범하다. 그는 역사에서 소재를 이끌어 오기도 하지만, 현대극을 다루는데 있어서도 항상 역사적 안목을 기조로 한다. 현대의 장면을 그리되 거기 빠져들어가지 않고 적당한 거리를 두고 객관적으로 파악함으로써 후세의 사가들이 보아서도 인정할 수 있는 분위기를 창조할려고 한다. 이것은 그의 특징이 되는 배문의 사용과도 연관을 가지는데 그는 현대에 실재하는 생활을 시어로 옮겨 역사화시키는 문제에 관심을 가지고 극중에 흔히 운문을 도입한다. Arden을 동시대의 극작가들과 구별짓게 하는 두드러진 특징은 Style에 있다. 그의 극에는 ballad풍의 노래는 물론이고, 춤과 합창이 극의 예술성을 고조시키는가 하면 때로는 가면이 등장하여 기괴한 분위기를 자아내며, 경구가 실험되기도 한다. 그는 또 극의 종류에도 변화를 꾀하여 Live like Pigs, The Happy Haven과 가타은 소극을 쓰기도 하고 Tho Workhouse Donkey같은 melo-drama도 시도했었다. 이와같이 그는 새 작품을 쓸 때마다 새로운 style을 실험하기 때문에 어떤 범주에 넣어서 생각할 수 없는 작가이다. 그의 style은 일정한 image를 떠 올릴 수 없을 정도로 다채롭다. 그는 온 정력과 광범위한 상상력을 동원하여 다른 영국작가들이 조심스러워 하고 두려워하는 style을 과감하게 실험하고 있다. 때로는 하나의 주제에다 너무 다양한 style을 적용할려고 하기 때문에 주제를 찾아내기 어려울 정도여서 실패도 한다. 그러나 그가 설령 실패한다고 하더라도 그 실패는 안이한 성공보다 더 중요한 의미를 지니게 되는 것이다. 그러나 Arden은 이런 실패에 조금도 좌절하지 않고 꾸준히 작품활동을 계속해오고 있다. 차츰 그에 대한 인식이 높아지고 관객이 늘어나자 비평가들도 주문을 하기 시작하였으며 앞으로의 보다 큰 발전과 가능성을 그에게 기대하고 있다.;John Osborne's production of Look Back in Anger in 1956 marked a turuing point in the English theatre. Young dramatists became more aware of social and political problems as well as the absurdity of the human condition. Some of more important dramatists in thisi group are Harold Pinter, Arnold Wesker and John Arden. These experimental playwrights have the major figures in contemporary English theatre, arousing many controversies among the critics as well as the audiences. Like Harold Printer, John Arden has been a puzzling figure throughout his career as playwright. What makes him unique, however, in his solid and constant interest in social problems. Eventually his social consciousness was reflected in his works as the major theme. For example, his criticism of the walfare state has been reflected in the works, Live Like Pigs and The Happy Haven, and corruption in local government is disclosed in The Workhouse Donkey. In Serjeant Musgrave's Dance, the anti_war theme is well demonstrated. One of the characteristics of his criticism of issues is that he never makes a moral judgement as to whether something is good or bad. There is always a conflict between order and anarchy in his plays but he does not justify either of them. He rather leaves the final judgement to the audience. This, of course, and ambiguity and confusion in his works. Along with his extraordinary sociological sensitivity goes an acute historical sense. Arden endeavors to transfer contemporary scene into historical contexts and creat of objectivity in the play. Arden can also be distinguished from his contemporaries by his unique writing style. He experiments with all possible theatrical devices. For example, the frequent use of ballad like songs, verses, and the use of masks all add a wide range of variety to plays. With his enormous energy and imagination, Arden ventures into various styles and periods where other Englishmen fear to tread. Sometimes he fails in his venture but his failures are often more interesting than more common-place successes. Altogether Ardern has not been a great success at the box office, both critics and audiences have come to recognize the quality of his works. His keen awareness of social issues and wild venture into various experiments will mark an important contribution to contemporary English theatre.
