Tennessee Williams의 작품에 나타난 갈등, 좌절, 도덕성의 의미

Abstract

Tennessee Williams(1914~)가 그의 대부분의 작품에서 다루고 있는 것은 환상과 현실과의 갈등, 경혼과 육체와의 갈등, 좌절, 고독, 그리고 현실로부터의 도피이다. Williams가 다루는 작품의 주인공들은 대체로 그들이 처한 거친 현실에서 헤어나지 못하는 인생의 패배자들이다. 특히 여주인공들은 현실에 적응하지 못하고 결국은 과거의 환상에 빠지거나 육체적 타락에 이르는, 정신적 또는 육체적으로 병든 非정상인들이다. The glass menagerie(1945)에서는 환상과 현실과의 갈등이 좌절 및 현실도피의 형태로 나타나며, 주인공들은 모두 현실의 패배자요 현실도피자들이다. Amanda는 과대망상적인 삶을 영위하는 중년부인으로, 현실과 환상과의 갈등에서 좌절을 맛보며, Blue Mountain의 추억에서 그녀의 도피처를 구한다. 신체적으로 불구인 Laura는 사회로부터 고립된 여성으로, 그녀의 도피처는 유리 동물원이다. Tom은 시인이 되기를 갈망하는 젊은이로, 가정과 직장의 올가미로부터 벗어나려고 몸부림치며, 그의 도피처는 영화와 배를 타고 여행하는 꿈이다. A streetcar named desire(1947)는 현실과 환상과의 갈등, 영혼과 육체와의 갈등을 다룬 작품으로, 점잖은 가문의 후예이자 매춘부라는 이중인격을 지닌 Blanche가 동물적 야비함을 지닌 Stanley와의 대결에서 패배되어 마침내는 정신이상에 이르게 된다. Summer and smoke(1948)는 영혼을 상징하는 Alma와 육체를 상징하는 John의 변화를 통해서 인생에 대한 관능적인 접근과 종교적인 접근의 대결을 보여준다. Williams는 그의 주인공들을 다룸에 있어서 복합적이며 절충적인 태도를 취한다. 그는 인생에 있어서 순수하게 정신적이거나 육체적인 사랑이 존재할 수 없다고 믿으며, 종교와 예술도 초월적이면서 동시에 세속적이라고 본다. Williams의 작품에 있어서는 sex가 종교와 결부되어 있어서 신성하면서도 불순한 것으로, 찬양할만한 것이며 동시에 처벌을 받아야 하는 것으로 나타난다. Williams는 어쩔 수 없는 환경에 처하여 현실에 적응하지 못하고 과거의 환상에 빠지는 여주인공들에 대해서는 공감과 동정을 표시하는 반면에, 그들의 자유로운 의지에 의해 타락한 생활을 영위하는 여주인공들에 대해서는 거기에 상응하는 처벌을 가함으로서 그의 도덕성을 시사하고 있다. 예를 들면 Williams가 Amanda에게는 공감과 동정을 표시하지만, Blanche에 대해서는 그녀의 性的난잡성에 대해서 처벌을 가하는 것에서 이 같은 점이 드러난다.;Tennessee Williams treats in his major works the conflicts between illusion and reality, and the spirit and the flesh along with frustration, solitude, and escape from the reality. The protagonists in his works are in general the defeated and frustrated in life who are unable to survive in the cruel world. Especially his heroines, who are sick either mentally or physically, are abnormal characters. They indulge themselves in the illusion of the past, or are led to physical degeneration due to their inability to adapt themselves to the reality. In The Glass Menagerie(1945), the conflict between illusion and reality is presented in the form of frustration and escape from the reality. All the protagonists are the defeated in the reality, and the refugees from the world they live in. Amanda, a middle-aged woman leading a paranoiac life, experienced frustrations in the conflict between reality and illusion, and seeks her refuge in the memory of the Blue Mountain. Laura, who is crippled physically, is a girl isolated from the society, and her refuge is the glass menagerie. Tom, an aspiring poet, struggles to escape from the trap of his family and job, and his refuges are the movie and the Merchant Marine. A Streetcar Named Desire(1947) represents the conflict between reality and illusion, and the spirit and the flesh. Blanche, who has dual personality of faded aristocrat and a prostitute, is defeated in her confrontation against Stanley who represents animalistic vulgarity, and is finally driven to insanity. Summer and Smoke(1948) is about the conflict between the spirit and the flesh, and religion and sex. The changes of Alma and John who symbolize spirit and flesh respectively show the confrontation of the sensual approach to life against the religious approach to life. Williams takes a compounding and compromising attitude on the treatment of his protagonists. He believes that there can be no purely spiritual love or physical love in life. Religion as well as art is both transcendental and worldly. Sex is so allied both religion that it is both holy and impure, admirable and punishable. Williams expresses sympathy and compassion for his heroines who in the trap of circumstances are unable to adjust themselves to the reality and indulge themselves in the illusion of the past, while ho suggests his sense of morality by inflicting corresponding punishments on his heroines who lead degenerate lives by their own free will. For instance, Williams shows sympathy and compassion for Amanda, while he punishes Blanche for her seual promiscuity.
