Hemingway와 죽음의 개념

Abstract

본 논문은 작가 Ernest Hemeingway의 작품을 중심으로 하여 그 작품속에 나타난 사망시를 연구 대상으로 하며 특히 죽음이라는 행위에 대한 행동계율을 밝혀 본 것이다. 그의 작품을 초기, 중기, 말기로 나누어 각기별로 죽음의 특징을 설명하였다. 초기는 죽음의 공포를 이기는 극기적인 죽음, 중기는 사회참여라는 사상전환과 함게 폭력적인 죽음, 말기에는 죽음을 완전히 초월한 이상적인 죽음의 형태라는 사망시의 변화를 통하여 Hemingway의 작품속에서 죽음 자체 보다는 인간의 죽음을 태하는 태도를 중요시하고 있다. 인간이 갖고 있는 죽음의 운명이 주는 공포를 극복하여 인간적인 위엄을 갖는 것을 죽이고, 죽는 행위에 있어서 반드시 갖추어야 하는 죽음의 계율임을 주장하고 있다. 이 위엄을 지키기 위하여 인간은 죽음의 공포를 이겨야 하며 적극적인 행동속에서 폭력적인 죽음도 하며 결국은 죽음을 초월해야 한다는 것이다.; This thesis aims to study on death concept expressed in the novels written by Ernest Hemingway, ecpecially focusing the study on the code in dying. I divided the novesl written by Hemingway into three parts. The first part is The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms, the second part is To Have and Have not and For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the last part is Across the River and into theTrees and The Old man and the Sea. In the First part Hemingway expressed storical death and in the second part he showed us violent death. In the last part was the disregard of the peril of one's death. According to Hemingway's conviction described in his novels, man is destined to die but should no be defeated by the fear of of death. Through violent death man can overcome it and at last transcend death itself. Man must have dignity in dying and in being killed. Dignity is the code of death.
