Abstract
A growing awareness of the importance of vocabulary learning has lately spurred a rapid increase in theoretical and experimental research efforts about vocabulary learning. In the 1970s, the importance of vocabulary was reconsidered in Communicative Language Teaching(CLT) and vocabulary learning is increasingly considered important in language education. In EFL situations, English learners are not exposed a lot to the target language, and some argue that they should learn vocabulary on purpose. Yet it's not actually an easy task to boost vocabulary knowledge, and incidental learning that means to grasp the meaning of vocabulary in communicative contexts is as necessary as intentional learning. A wide variety of factors affect incidental vocabulary learning. The intensity of incidental learning hinges on not only the external factors of vocabulary like frequency, saliency, a part of speech or contexts but learners' own purpose of reading and prior knowledge. Specifically, learner factors such as reading purpose and topic familiarity have a lot of impact on their reading comprehension and vocabulary inference during reading process. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine how the effect of incidental vocabulary learning by beginning English learners depended on their reading purpose and what differences topic familiarity made to their vocabulary learning. The subjects in this study were 191 middle school eighth graders, who were divided into three different groups. The three groups read the given texts for fun, for scanning and for test, respectively. Two different sorts of texts were selected after a pilot survey was conducted. One was what the students got used to, and the other wasn't. After they read the texts for the different purposes, an unexpected vocabulary test was implemented. And then a survey was conducted to find out their vocabulary learning methods and usual reading purpose, and how their familiarity with the topics of the texts affected their ideas or attitude was investigated as well. The findings of the study were as follows: First, as for the relationship of the type of purpose to the results of incidental vocabulary learning, the group that read just for fun without performing any particular task lagged behind the other two groups, and the experimental group that read for test were ahead of the other two. The performance of the group that read for scanning was between that of the two groups, but there wasn't any significant gap between it and the group of reading for fun. Second, topic familiarity made a difference to the effect of the incidental learning. In the event of the text with the unfamiliar topic, the strange topic and vocabulary made it hard for the learners to figure out what the text was about, and that urged them to put more efforts into inferring the meaning of the words. So they found it more difficult to determine what the text was about, and the effect of the incidental learning got greater. Third, concerning interaction among the learning factors involving topic familiarity, reading purpose and English proficiency, their vocabulary learning was significantly different according to reading purpose when they dealt with the text that handled the unfamiliar topic. It indicated that vocabulary learning was reliant on reading purpose. On the other hand, there was no gap among the groups when they dealt with the text containing the familiar topic, and the effect of the incidental vocabulary learning wasn't under the influence of interaction between the reading purpose and English reading comprehension, either. Finally, the students made a better incidental acquisition of the high- frequency words than the low-frequency ones in the texts. They might ignore unfamiliar vocabulary at first, but they got to take notice of it when it appeared repeatedly. In conclusion, the findings of the study suggested that the degree of incidental vocabulary learning hinged on reading purpose, though this study had some limitations in terms of grouping and procedure. And it's also found that incidental vocabulary learning was more effective when the students were better motivated. In general, learners' prior knowledge of a given text may play a vital role in reading comprehension, but in order to accelerate vocabulary learning, they should have a chance to read unfamiliar texts so that they could concentrate their mind on vocabulary. It will contribute to letting them acquire more vocabulary by accident. In addition, it's required to increase the frequency of vocabulary that students must learn in order to draw their attention.
