Abstract

American dream은 미국사회의 소산으로 미국특유의 조건, 즉 방대한 토지와 풍부한 천연자원 및 기회 등을 갖춘 데다가 Puritanism에 입각한 사상적 배경 등을 토대로 하여 산출된 것이다. American dream은 성공의 기본원리로 industry, frugality, sobriety등을 주장한 Self-Made Man 의 성공담에 의해 더욱 강화되었다. 그러나 현대에 이르러 자원의 부족현상이 일어나고 富의 획득을 위한 경쟁이 치열해지자 ‘성공에의 꿈’은 ‘성공에의 신화’로 전환되었다. 미 서부가 꿈의 실현지로 등장하고 ‘성공에의 신화’에서 비롯된 환상은 인간의 마음속을 점유하고 확대된다. 이러한 환상은 The day of the Locust 에 나타난 바와 같이 다양한 반응을 일으킨다. Faye Greener는 그녀가 구축한 꿈의 세계에서 자기만족으로 극도로 뭉쳐져 있으며, 그녀의 속성인 artificially, sensuality, invulnerability로서 American dream을 구현한다. 그녀의 아버지 Harry greener는 실제의 자기 자신과 가장된 가지를 분별하지 못하고 완전히 혼란 속에 빠져서 결국 American dream의 희생자가 된다. Middle-Westerner이며 건강으로 인해 California에 온 Homer Simpson은 꿈에 의해 배반당하고 꿈을 실현하지 못한 군중을 대표한다. 영화작가 Claude Estee는 가짜 세계를 추구하고 false dream을 만들어 낸다. Nathanael West는 The day of the Locust에서 미국사회의 어두운 면을 示唆하고 있다. American dream of success는 미국 산업 발달과 과학기술의 진보를 초래하여 국가발전에 至大한 공헌을 하였으나, 정신적인 면에서는 인간들에게 false dream을 심어놓고 그 실해의 원인이나 책임을 인간 자신에게 돌리는 것이다.;The dream of success is distinctively American in the sense that the religious and economic philosophies expounded by Puritanism set the basis for it together with the vast land, plentiful natural resources and ample opportunity. The American dream was reinforced by the story of the Self-Made man, who proclaimed that a man of success is the man of industry, frugality, sobriety. By the turn of the century, however, it was discovered that natural resources were not ultimated and that competition for the acquisition of wealth became extremely high. At this point, the dream of success transforms itself into the myth of success. The American West becomes a symbol of the dreams to the people who live in a society where the dreams cannot be realized. Fantasy born of the myth of success grows bigger in people's minds, causing different reactions as is shown in The Day of the Locust : Faye Greener is self-sufficient in the dreamy world, herself embodying artificiality, sensuality, and invulnerability of American dream; Harry Greener, Faye's father, is totally confused between his real self and the pretended one, thus becoming a victim of American dream; Homer Simpson, a Middle-Westerner, who came to California for health, represents the angry crowd, so far betrayed and unfulfilled; and Claude Estee, a screen writer, pursues the sham world and produces false dreams. In The Day of the Locust, Nathanael West, perceiving that the success ideology has a negative impact on American society, presents a dark aspect of the society. The American dream of success may have contributed to development of technology and growth of the nation; and yet, it also planted false dreams in the minds of the people and charged them with laziness and delinquency upon failure.
