Elizabeth Dalloway in Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway: A Touchstone in the Cultural Evolution of a Young Woman's Self-Identity

Abstract

It is possible for a foreign language learner to access more effectively a serious work of literature through an understanding of its culture. Moreover, focusing on a character who is compelling to a foreign language learner of a certain gender and age group can help the reader benefit by understanding the character to better appreciate the culture he or she belongs to, and simultaneously by appreciating the character one can understand the culture better, which ultimately leads to a more effective understanding of the work of literature. Adopting Elizabeth as a pivotal guide of understanding Virginia Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway with Julia, Michael Cunningham's reproduction of Elizabeth in The Hours as her main reference, this thesis scrutinizes the cultural evolution of a young woman's self-identity. Through the discovery of the veiled significance of Elizabeth, a Korean reader would successfully appreciate Woolf's vision for ideal women as well as to achieve an intercultural perspective enhancing understanding foreign language literature. Firstly, as identity is confirmation of one's consciousness and is inevitably dependent on the society and culture one belongs to, Elizabeth's cultural environment is discussed in terms of city and social background. Demonstrating Elizabeth's position as a Victorian daughter of the upper class in postwar London in 1923, Woolf describes the social oppression over women of that time, and lays the foundation for Elizabeth to reveal her blooming vision of a new woman who would progress through the radical change of society. The intensity, dynamism, and complexity of Elizabeth's London is revived in Julia's contemporary New York City where people have undergone sociological challenge to make sense of the chaos of social identity at the beginning of a new millenium. Julia's struggle to achieve her identity is challenged by the revolutionary reconstruction of traditional family composition reflecting the flow of cultural evolution in the twentieth century. The intercultural assessment of these two social contexts would encourage a Korean reader's awareness of others' identities and provide an insight for realizing her own position in a world of rapid change. Secondly, the sexuality which constitutes a major part of a woman's identity is discussed in terms of evolution with the change of culture. Woolf's revolutionary vision of sexuality challenging homogeneous patriarchal values exploded through Elizabeth who goes though an active process of sexual-awareness and self-affirmation through the significant relationships with her mother Clarissa and her tutor Miss Kilman. Elizabeth's exploration of sexuality constructs a footstone for Elizabeth's quest for independence and reveals her potential to liberate herself beyond all the obstacles suggested in a sociocultural context. Her sexuality challenge is reinterpreted by Cunningham in his lesbian characters and Julia who are depicted as new independent humankind free from already existing sexuality arguments. This analysis of the evolution of sexuality in the twentieth century may help a Korean woman to explore an interculturally integrated sexuality corresponding with the social norms of the contemporary global age. Thirdly, with Woolf's vision that self-actualization through professional careers would liberate women from the restraint of male domination and form a shield to protect women's independent self-identity, Elizabeth actively embarks on her journey through London, and eventually realizes her self-identity and inner-motivated ambition for having a profession. Elizabeth's burgeoning recognition of professional actualization can be interpreted as a threshold of a woman's self-identity evolution which has constantly progressed during the last century. Elizabeth's future-oriented vision is positively realized in Julia in New York City where she dreams of even more achievement in her culturally liberal environment which supports her potential for success. Through a critical examination of these respective cultural contexts, a Korean woman in a still conservative male dominated society may stimulate her own ambition for a professional career which would ultimately lead to achievement of self-identity. In conclusion, with the exploding energy from her self-quest, Elizabeth's self-identity has evolved with the change of culture, and it is finally embodied in a more powerful and promising contemporary counterpart, Julia. Therefore, thinking forward by means of Elizabeth's journey of self-exploration helps to take a young Korean woman one step forward for a better future for women, as well as a more successful appreciation of a great work of literature, Mrs. Dalloway, overcoming some of the inherent difficulties interpreting foreign language literature.;외국어 학습자는 목표어 문화의 이해를 통해 목표어의 문학을 더 잘 이해할 수 있다. 또한 독자와 동일한 성별과 나이를 가진 호소력 있는 등장인물을 중심으로 작품을 분석하면, 독자는 작품의 배경 문화를 더욱 효과적으로 인지할 수 있고, 문화에 대한 이해가 다시 등장인물에 대한 이해를 가속화함으로서 궁극적으로 작품을 효율적으로 감상할 수 있게 된다. 따라서 본 연구는 <댈러웨이부인>의 등장인물인 엘리자베스를 이 작품의 문화적 접근 방법의 중심축으로 삼고, 마이클 커닝햄의 <세월>의 등장인물이자 엘리자베스의 현대적 재생이라 할 수 있는 줄리아를 주요 참고 대상으로 하여, 초년 여성의 자아정체성이 문화의 변천에 따라 진화하고 있음을 밝힌다. 현재까지 저평가 되었던 엘리자베스의 중요성을 새로운 시각으로 조명함으로서, 한국의 초년 여성 독자들은 이상적 여성상에 대한 울프의 통찰력을 이해하는 동시에, 외국어 문학의 이해를 촉진시킬 수 있는 상호문화적 관점을 회득할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 첫째로, 자아정체성이란 자신이 속해 있는 사회 문화와 필연적 관계이므로, 엘리자베스의 문화적 환경을 도시와 사회적 배경이라는 두 가지 측면에서 분석하였다. 울프는 1923년 전후 런던, 빅토리아조의 전통을 이어받은 상류사회의 여성인 엘리자베스를 통하여, 당시 여성이 극복해야할 사회적 속박을 드러내고, 혼돈과 변화의 물결 속에서 여성이 스스로를 해방시킬 수 있는 잠재력을 가지고 있음을 밝히는 초석을 마련한다. 당시 런던의 복잡성과, 역동성, 격렬한 변화의 에너지는 1998년 커닝햄에 의해 줄리아의 삶의 무대, 뉴욕에서 재생된다. 세기말 뉴욕은 복잡하고 불확실한 사회 속에서 자아정체성을 재정립하고자 하는 시대적 혼란을 고스란히 반영한다. 줄리아의 자아정체성 확립을 위한 분투는 20세기 문화적 진화의 결과라고 할 수 있는 전통적 가족제도의 붕괴와 재구성에 의해 도전받게 된다. 이 두 문화권과 그 안에 살고 있는 다른 시대의 두 여성을 상호문화적 관점으로 고찰함으로서, 세계의 주요 현대 도시 중 하나인 서울에 살고 있는 초년 여성은 자신의 사회 문화적 배경을 비판적으로 인식하고, 자아정체성 탐색을 시도하는 계기를 마련할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다. 둘째로, 여성의 자아정체성의 중요한 일부인 성정체성을 역시 문화적 진화의 관점에서 논하였다. 울프는 엘리자베스를 통하여 가부장제의 단일한 가치체계에 도전하는 새로운 여성정체성에 대한 미래지향적 통찰력을 시사하였다. 엘리자베스는 그녀에게 중대한 영향력을 미치는 두 여성, 어머니인 클라리사와 가정교사인 킬먼과의 관계를 통하여 자아에 대한 주체적인 자각과 긍정을 바탕으로, 당시의 사회문화적 제약을 극복하는 독립적 성정체성을 확립하게 된다. 커닝햄은 엘리자베스의 실험과 도전을 포스트모더니즘 관점으로 재해석 하여, 줄리아와 그녀 주변의 레즈비언 인물들이 사회의 이분법적 성적 논리를 초월하고 개인 고유의 자유롭고 변화무쌍한 성정체성을 지닌 것으로 묘사하였다. 이와 같이, 20세기에 진화해온 성정체성을 분석해봄으로서, 한국 초년 여성은 글로벌 시대의 사회 규준에 부합하는, 상호문화적으로 통합된 성정체성을 탐색해 볼 수 있으며, 개인의 선택과 다양한 생활방식을 존중하는 보다 개방적인 사회 분위기로의 혁신을 꿈꿀 수 있다. 셋째로, 엘리자베스는 여성의 직업적 자아성취가 여성을 남성 지배 구조로부터 해방시키고, 여성의 독립적 자아를 보호하는 방패가 되리라는 울프의 신념을 내재화하고 있다. 엘리자베스는 런던 거리로의 외출에서 비롯된 능동적 사유의 여정을 통해 자신의 내면에서 우러나는 강렬한 직업적 성취 욕구를 깨닫게 되며, 이 깨달음의 순간은 20세기 동안 진행되어온 여성의 직업적 성취욕 진화의 시발점으로 평가할 수 있다. 그녀의 진취적 야망은 뉴욕의 줄리아의 삶에서 더욱 긍정적으로 실현된다. 줄리아는 자신의 잠재력을 성공으로 실현시키는데 고무적으로 작용할 수 있는 자유로운 사회문화적 배경을 인식하고, 더 큰 야망과 자신감을 드러낸다. 이 두 여성의 자아실현 욕구와 사회적 맥락의 차이를 비판적으로 조망함으로서, 보수적 남성 지배 사회에 살고 있는 한국의 초년 여성이 독립성 획득의 발판이 되는 직업적 성취에 적극적으로 도전하는데 자극이 될 것으로 기대된다. 결론적으로, 울프가 엘리자베스를 통해 제시한 여성의 자아정체성은 자아탐색에서 비롯되는 폭발적인 에너지를 원동력으로 문화적 변화의 흐름과 함께 진화했으며, 그 진화의 소산은 엘리자베스의 현대적 재생이며 분신이라 할 수 있는 줄리아를 통해서 보다 강하고 유망한 여성으로 형상화 되었다. 따라서, 엘리자베스의 자아 탐색 여정을 문화적 관점으로 고찰함으로서, 한국 초년 여성 독자들은 울프의 걸작 <댈러웨이부인>을 성공적으로 감상할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 보다 나은 여성의 미래의 실현을 위해 진일보 할 수 있다.
