Abstract
There are many languages in the world and all of them are different from each other in many respects. From the language differences we find the differences in syllable structures. English is the most important foreign language to learn in the middle or high school in Korea. This paper is a study on syllable structure of words that appear in the middle school English textbooks being used in Korea at present. The study was made on all the words in the textbooks to classify words with respect to their number of syllables, classification of words by open or closed syllable, and the comparison of syllable structure of English and Korean. The study showed the following results; 1) Of the 1,173 words contained in the middle English text book, there are 601 monosyllabic words, 385 dissyllabic words, 127 trisyllabic words, 26 four syllabic words, 3 five syllabic words and 32 words that contain syllabic consonants. Majorities of the words in the textbooks are one or two syllable words, which is 83.9% of the total number of words used. 2) Of the 1,173 words, there are 284 open syllabe words and 889 closed syllable words. It was found that many words are closed syllable words. 3) According to the analysis by syllable type, phonotactic structures are CVC, CVC·CV, CVC·CVC, CVC·CV, or CV·CVC and the number of words of more than 4 syllables are very few. 4) Compared with the syllable structure of Korean, that of English is found to be more complicated. From the results it can be concluded that difficulties in learning may be caused by differences of English and Korean syllable structure. Therefore, by including the study of proper syllable structure, it will be some help to teach English more efficiently in the schools in Korea.;世界에는 수많은 言語가 있으며 그 言語들은 각각 특색이 있고 또 다른점도 많다. 그중에서도 音節構造는 韓國語와 큰 差異가 있고 영어는 우리나라에서 第一 外國語로 各級學校에서 重要하게 다루고 있으므로 音節構造의 特徵을 分析 把握하는 일은 效率的인 英語學習을 위하여 必要하다고 생각되어 본 硏究를 시도했다. 본 硏究에서는 音節의 定義, 單語의 分節法을 알아보고 中學校 英語 敎科書에 수록된 모든 單語를 音節構造 分析 및 英語와 韓國語의 音節構造를 比較하여 다음과 같은 結果를 얻었다. 總 1,173個國語中 1音節語가 601個, 2音節語가 385個, 3音節語가 127個, 4音節語가 26個, 5音節語가 3個, 성절적 子音(syllabic consonant)을 包含한 單語가 30여개로 1,2音節語가 全體의 83.9%로 대부분을 차지해 中學校 英語 敎科書에서 單音節語가 많음을 알 수 있으며 總 單語中 開音節語가 284個, 閉音節語가 889個로 閉音節語가 대부분 차지하고 있으며, 單語의 音節構造를 分析해 보면 CVC, CVC·CV, CVC·CVC, CVC·CV, CV·CVC의 音節構造로 構成된 單語들이 가장 많았고, 4音節語 以上의 單語들은 多音節語에 속하므로 中學校 英語 敎科書에는 많이 收錄되어 있지 않았으며, 英語의 音節構造는 韓國語에 비해 매우 複雜하며, 英語에는 韓國語에 없는 音節構造를 가진 單語들이 많이 있으므로, 두 言語의 音節構造의 差異로 오는 諸問題點을 調査함으로써 올바른 單語 習得에 도움이 되고져 한다.
