Abstract
This is a survey to analyze the psychological variables influencing the sight-reading ability of piano performance majors in college. This study was conducted by means of psychological tests, questionnaires and sight-reading examinations. The significance of this study lies in the recognition of the necessity and importance of teaching sight-reading to piano performance majors. The contents of this study are shown as follows: A. Studies on the theoretical background of sight-reading. B. Studies on the relationship between the responses from the psychological tests and the questionnaires and that of sight-reading ability. 1. The relationship between I.Q. and sight-reading ability. 2. The relationship between personality characteristics and sight-reading ability. 3. The relationship between perception ability and sight-reading ability. 4. The relationship between music interest level and sight-reading ability. 5. The relationship between the results of the questionnaires concerning sight-reading to that of sight-reading ability. 6. A survey has been done on the educational conditions of sight-reading and the recognition level of sight-reading among piano majors by means of analyzing the free responses of sight-reading questionnaires. The results of the survey are as follows: A. Sight-reading ability is not related significantly to I.Q., perception, personality characteristics or music interest level. B. There are no significant relationships between the development of sight-reading ability and that of the duration of the piano lessons, piano teachers or the amount of ensemble experience in the primary stage of piano study. c. It has been found that students who have had frequent accompaniment experiences and good grades in sight-singing and musical dictations are also good sight-readers. D. No students have had any intentional sight-reading training. E. In most cases students did not have any confidence in sight-reading. Although sight-reading ability does not make any difference to a performance, most students consider sight-reading education important because it plays an important role in the course of practice and accompaniment. Consequently it is not that sight-reading ability does not make any difference to piano majors. Concerning piano education, the degree of perception concerning sight-reading seems to have been low because the problem of sight-reading lies not in the musical performance but in the course of practice. In other words, the former is outwardly visible and the latter is not. Another reason for this can be accredited to our music educational situation which lacks ensemble experience and opportunity. But most students seem to approve of the necessity of sight-reading education. Since sight-reading ability can be developed through training, there is a need for a renewed educational viewpoint and recognition of sight-reading.
