Contrastive Analysis와 Common Errors

Abstract

The complete contrastive analysis of all the problems in which the language learner may be expected to have trouble is a task of such enormous proportions' that the scope of the analysis has been limited to some aspects of the English words which Korean students frequently misuse owing to the difference of expression between Korean and English In this study we Lave tried to investigate the students' erroneous usage of elements of the English words which are troublesome because of the difference of expressions. In comparing errors made at the first investigation with those of the second investigation, we were able to identify areas in which the students tend to err and in which they show relatively little problem. To clarify the blind spots for the Korean students, both recognition and production tests of 51 items consisting of the easily confused English words of 17 types were prepared and administered to the 20 high-level students of P. Girls' High School. The main consideration in designing the tests employed in the project was to investigate the common errors covering a-wide area in the English word selection and to show that expected outcome of the contrastive analysis and common errors should not be considered to conflict with but is complementary to each other. From the knowledge gained through; the studies, errors could be classified into types stemming either from performance mistakes, mother-tongue interference or false intralanguage analogy. There are some linguists who feel that contrastive analysis can not be profitably taken adventage of in teaching a foreign, language but contrastive analysis, as represented by the tests in this project, is a very helpful basis both theoretically and practically, on which we can predict the interference problems of a language learner. Interference, or, native-to-target language transfer, plays such an important role in language performance that contrastive analysis, so long as it is in well regulated control, could correlate highly with performance data. The lack of such knowledge has made the teaching of English less effective and is holding back the development of materials which deal with the specific problems of Korean students. It is hoped that this study is of some value as one small step in the direction of overcoming that kind of difficulty.;외국어 학습에 있어서 학습자의 모국어와 목표어 간의 차이에 기인되는 문제점은 많다. 외국어 학습을 통해서 새로운 지식을 얻고 외국문화와 사회를 이해할 필요성이 증가일로에 있는 오늘날 그 도구로 쓰이는 외국어의 정확한 이해와 구사력은 필수적인 것이 되었다. 즉 외국어의 음성, 문법구조 어휘와 그 의미를 보다 정확하게 이해하고 습득하지 않고서는 외국인의 사회, 문화, 사상, 감정등을 잘 이해 할 수 없으며 의사전달이 올바로 될 수 없다. 그런데 많은 외국어 학습자들은 외국어를 이해하는데 있어서 모국어의 형식 (form), 의미 (meaning), 분포 (distribution)를 전이 (transfer)하려는 경향이 있다. 이러한 장애를 최대한으로 감소시키기 위해서 모국어와 목표어를 대조분석해보면 두 언어의 유사점과 차이점이 들어나는데, 대개 외국어 학습시에 학생들이 부딛치는 난점은 두 언어의 차이점에서 생긴다. 따라서 두 언어의 음성, 문법구조, 어휘, 문화등의 차이점을 찾아 깊이 이해할 필요가 있다고 생각하고, 그 중에서 한국어식 발상에 기인되는 영어 어휘 선택의 문제점을 고려해 보려고 한 것이다. 언어교육에 대조분석이 필요한가에 대해서는 상반된 견해가 있다. Lado와 Fries가 Contrastive Analysis의 유용론을 주장하는가 하면 Newmark과 Reibel은 극단적인 무용론을 주장하고 있다. 그들의 주장은, 구조에 따라 체계를 세운 교재나 교수법은 불필요하며, 또 Contrastive Analysis에 의해서 만든 교재는 도리어 간섭현상을 유발시킨다고 본 것이다. 여기서는 이들의 주장을 더 전개시키기 보다 실제 수업을 통해서 발견된 Common errors를 모아서 비교적 빈도수가 높은 error는 무엇이며, 많은 수의 error를 낸 원인은 무엇인지 찾아 보자는 것이 본 논문의 중점적인 내용이다. 즉 20명을 대상으로, 17종류로 error의 범주를 정하여 각 항목마다 3문항씩을 두어 51문항을 작성했다. 1회, 2회에 걸쳐 recognition면과 production면에서의 error를 살펴 본 결과 1회때 보다는 2회때에 error의 수가 크게 감소했고, recognition의 단계에서 보다 production 단계에서 더 어려움을 느끼는 것은 예견 했던 대로이다. 보다 과학적인 분석 방법으로, 풍부한 자료를 가지고 written production 뿐만 아니라 oral production 면에서의 error를 조사하고 분석하는 작업이 이뤄져서 외국어 학습에 보다 큰 도움이 되는 길이 있기를 바란다.
