Henry James's Feminism in The Portrait of a Lady

Abstract

이 연구논문에서는 Henry James의 심리적 사실주의를 기초로 한 Feminism에 관해 살펴보았다. 그는 작품들에서 점진적인 의식의 변화를 많이 취급하고 있는데, The Portrait of a Lady는 그의 여러 장편들-The American, Golden Bowl, The Bostonians, The Wings of the Dove등-과 기타 단편들-Daisy Miller Washington Square등-에서 보여지는 것보다 훨씬 더 체계적으로 여주인공의 심리적 상황변화를 의식의 흐름을 통해 잘 나타내고 있다. 그의 여주인공 Isabel Archer는 다른 여성들 Madame Merle, Isabel의 숙모 Mrs. Touchett와 Henrietta Stackpole등과는 뚜렷이 대조를 이룬다. 즉 전자는 해방의 대상을 외부적인 상황변화-정치, 경제, 사회적-에 두기보다는 전통에 맞서 자신의 선택과 발전의 기회를 균등히 갖고자 노력하고 일단 선택한 자신의 행동에 대해선 도덕적, 혹은 초월적으로( 이상적으로 ) 책임을 지려고 한다. 반면 후자들은 Henry James가 이소설을 쓸 당시에 여권해방운동가들의 여러 유형을 각기 반영하고 있다. Madame Merle는 겉으로는 자유주의적이고 끊임없는 자기발전을 통해 자기완성을 이룬 듯이 보이나 실상은 지독하게 이기주의적이고 기회주의적이며 욕심많은 물질추구자이다. Ralph Touchett의 어머니로 등장하는 Mrs, Touchett는 자기가 하고 싶은대로 다하고 사는 여성으로 묘사된다. 결혼을 해서 남편( Mr. Touchett ) 과 아들 ( Ralph Touchett )이 있음에도 불구하고 그녀는 가족 구성원으로서 유대감, 책임감등을 전혀 느끼지 못하고 완벽하게 자유 방임형으로 살아간다. 그러나 그녀는 인간이 공기나 물의 고마움을 깨닫고 있지 못하듯이 자신에게 주어진 자유의 의미와 고마움을 전혀 느끼지 못하며, 그것을 가치있게 사용하지 못한다. 마지막으로 Isabel과 흥미있는 대조가 되는 Henrietta Stackpole은 당시 많은 여성문필가들이 여성해방운동에 깊이 관여하고 있었음을 간접적으로 시사한다. Henrietta는 자신의 소질을 알고 그것을 발휘할 수 있는 저널리즘 분야에서 일하지만 그녀의 직업을 대하는 태도는 직업적이지 못하며, 책임감이 뚜렷하게 대처하지도 못한다. 더욱이 동료 저널리스트인 Mr. Bantling과의 결혼은 그 당시뿐 아니라 현대 여성해방운동가들이 겪고 있는 딜레마들 중의 하나이기도 하다. 즉 기존의 전통에 따라 결혼하는 것이 자유와 독립을 외치는 해방의 포기인가, 아니면 그것을 단순한 인생의 한 과정으로 여기고 해방의 대상을 다른데서 찾을 것인가의 문제를 두고 아직도 많은 논란이 있다. Henry James에 의하면, Isabel Archer를 통해 알 수 있듯이 자유롭고 독립적인 존재가 된다는 것은 외부적인 상황으로 부터의 해방을 의미하기 보다, 오히려 전통과 편견에 대한 내면적 의식의 해방을 의미했다. 이것은 흔히 Ralph Waldo Emerson 과 교분을 맺고 있었던 그의 부친에게서 받은 영향이 많이 작용하고 있었음을 보여준다. 즉 이상주의적이며, 물질보다는 정신에, 외형보다는 내면에 좀 더 가치를 부여하는 초월주의적 사고가 이사벨의 자유와 독립의 추구하는 방향을 결정하고 있다. 그녀는 진정한 자유나 독립이란 외부적 억압상황에서 벗어난 상태가 아니라 자신의 내면세계의 성숙을 통한 책임있는 행동을 할 수 있을 때 이루어지는 것임을 보여준다. 이런면에서 Henry James가 그리는 feminist는 여성으로서보다는 전인적 한 인격체로서의 발전을 추구하고, 자유의지와 선택에 책임을 질 줄 아는 민주 시민이었다고 말 할 수 있겠다. 그의 여성해방론은 오늘날 여성들에게 참된 해방의 의미를 일깨워 주고, 사회적 재반 여건에서 오는 피해의식에서 벗어나 과감히 대처할 수 있는 내면적의식의 성숙과 자기발전에 대한 의지를 북돋아 주고, 더 나아가 전인적 인간으로서의 완성을 위한 추구에 노력할 것을 촉구하고 있다.;Henry James's feminism based on his psychological realism has been studied in this thesis. Among his works which deal with the gradual development of women's consciousness, including The Americans, Golden Bowl, The Bostonians, The Wings of the Dove, Daisy Miller, and Washington Square, The Protrait of a Lady best represents a woman's psychological development systematically. The heroine in this novel, Isabel Archer, is a prominent contrast, to the other characters, such as Madame Merle, Mrs. Touchett (Isabel's aunt), and Henrietta Stackpole in many aspects. Isabel Archer concentrates on the right to have free choice for self-development against convention and, once taken, she tries to be responsible for her behavior morally or transcendentally, while the others respectively represent various types of the early women reformers to be found at the time when Henry James was writing the novel. Madame Merle appears to achieve self-development through incessant self-cultivation, feigning liberalism but in fact she is a very selfish, opportunistic and greedy materialist. Mrs. Touchett, Ralph Touchett's mother is described as a pampered woman who would do anything she likes. In spite of her matrimonial obligation, Mrs. Touchett doesn't feel any responsibility or family bonds at all and lives a life with the attitude of laissez-faire. However, she doesn't appreciate the meaning of her freedom and can't use it meaningfully as we sometimes forget to appreciate the presence of air and water. Henrietta Stackpole, an interesting character, indirectly shows that many female writers have been deeply involved with the women's liberation movement. Henrietta Stackpole knows her talent and works in the area of journalism but she isn't so professional and responsible as a career woman. Moreover, the fact that she marries another journalist, Mr. Bantling is one of the dilemmas not only for the women in those days but also for the modern feminist. In other words, women have the question, "Does conventional marriage mean giving up the liberation which claims freedom and independence or is that just a process of life with other areas left to seek freedom in?" According to Henry James, to be free and independent means being liberated from convention and prejudice, or liberated from inward consciousness rather than being free from the outward conditions. This thesis explains that his father, being close to Ralph Waldo Emerson, has an influence on Henry James. The transcendentalism which puts more value on the inner and spiritual side than on the outer and material directs Isabel Archer's way to seek freedom and liberation. She proves that true freedom and independence doesn't mean being free from the outward constraints but can be obtained when one becomes responsible for one's deeds through inward maturity. In this sense, the liberated woman Henry James describes is a democratic citizen who seeks her development as a whole being and who is responsible for her free will and decisions. His feminism awakens woman to the true meaning of liberation, urges them to overcome the victim complex, caused by various social conditions and to cope with it by the maturity of inner consciousness and self-development, and persuades them into endeavoring to accomplish the ideal human goal, to be a whole being.
