MENTAL ILLNESS IN 20TH CENTURY AMERICAN NOVELS

Abstract

오늘날 많은 사회학자들은 정신병이 가장 중요한 사회문제들 중 하나라고 지적하고 있다. 그들은 정신병이 병든 사회의 한 단면을 대표한다고 주장하고 있다. 정신병이 병든 사회의 어떠한 단면을 대표하는지 알아보기 위해 이 논문은 심리학자, 사회학자 및 문학비평가들의 지식을 바탕으로 세 소설을 해석해 보았다. They insist that it represents an aspect of a sick society. To investigate what aspect of a sick society it represents, this study has interpreted three novels with the help of the wisdom of psychologists, sociologists, and literary critics. In Tender Is the Night, Nicole Warren's sickness symbolizes a destructive power on an individual. With money as the power at the back of herself, Nicole ruined Dick Diver. According to some critics, she represents modern America and he old America at the beginning in its history. In such an aspect, her disease can also indicate the corruption of a culture. In Franny and Zooey, Franny represents a neurotic family and the family represents the maladjustment of a genius to society. The Glass family has no position in society. As a result, they turned their eyes into their inner world. That accelerates their isolation from society. That isolation also shows the absence of communion that pervades in society. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest uses an asylum as a miniture of modern society. It suggests the powerless and alienated state of human beings in a mechanical, industrial society. Accordingly, the meanings of mental sickness are destructive power or a symptom of cultural corruption; absence of communion: powerlessness and alienation in society. Many sociologists assert that those are the problems of America. Through the examples of these three novels the mental sickness indicate that not only America but the rest of the world is moving in an unbalanced and unhealthy state.
