英語敎育에 있어서의 發音의 問題点 硏究

Abstract

本 論文은 한국어를 母國語로 하고 英語를 目標語로 하는 學生들이 한국어와 英語의 음운조직의 差異로 因하여 英語音을 배우는데 있어 당면하는 問題點을 考察하고 그들이 실제로 어려움을 느끼는 音이 어떤 것인지 調査해서 효과적인 音聲指導 方法을 생각해 보고자 하는데 그 目的이 있다. 한국어 發音習性은 英語의 音을 배우는데 많은 障碍가 된다는 것은 周知의 사실이므로 對照分析을 통해서 難點을 예측하고 학생들에게 問題가 될 要因들을 미리 방지함으로써 發音指導를 效率的으로 할 수 있다고 본다. 本 論文은 Lado가 提示한 三段階의 對照分析의 節次 즉 (1) 音素의 比較 (2) 變異音의 比較 (3) 分布의 比較에 依據해서 問題點을 찾아 보았다. 한국 학생들의 發音面에서의 오류를 보면 1) 한국어에 없는 音素가 英語에만 있을때 큰 어려움을 당하고 있다. 한국 학생들은 한국어에 存在하지 않는 音들은 한국어와 비슷한 音으로 대치해서 發音하고 있다. 그러나 이것은 人門期부터 정확한 調音方法과 調音點을 설명하고 항상 발음의 重要性을 강조하면서 발성근육을 훈련만 시킨다면 어렵지 않게 해결되리라 본다. 2) D.Jones의 長母音 記號 /i : / /u : /는 /i/나 /u/와의 音質差異를 無視함으로써 發音을 誤導하는 결과가 되고 있으므로 Trager Smith의 기호인 /iy : i/, /uw : u/를 사용해서 지도함이 효과적이다. 3) 變異音의 발음문제는 그 정도가 더 심각하게 나타나 있는데 이것은 잘못 발음해도 뜻의 差異를 가져오지 않으므로 소홀히 다루기 쉬우나 人門期부터 철저히 지도하는 것이 바람직 하다. 4) 음절 구조의 차이로 인해서 英語의 子音群을 파괴시키고 그 사이에 母音을 첨가 시킴으로써 英語의 실제 음절수 보다 확대해서 發音하는 현상등이 현저히 나타난다. 發音은 人門期의 指導가 매우 중요하므로 英語敎師는 자신의 정확한 발음습득을 위해 부단히 노력해야 하고 조음 음성학에 관한 풍부한 지식을 갖고 있음이 바람직 하며 對照分析한 結果에 依하여 學習上의 問題點에 대한 효과적인 解決方案을 세워야 한다.;The main object of this thesis is to investigate the problems of the phonological system of English in a hope to overcome pronunciation difficulties stemming from the different sound systems between Korean and English. This paper examined the specific problems Korean students might have in learning English pronunciation and tried to propose some effective approaches in teaching correct pronunciation. This paper followed Lado's procedures in comparing two different sound systems : (1) the comparison of phonemes, (2) the comparison of variants of phonemes, and (3) the comparison of distribution. The following blind spots have been identified as the result of survey checks based on the contrastive analysis data : 1) English sounds that do not exist in Korean, tend to bring trouble for Korean students. The absence of these phonemes in Korean easily causes Korean students to substitute their Korean counterparts. 2) The phonetic symbols of Jones' /i :, i/, /u :, u/, tends to result in an erroneous teaching of these sounds, and alternative symbols of Trager Smith are proposed in preference to Jones, for they are better suited for teaching these vowels. 3) Mistakes in the pronunciation of allophones of English phonemes are more serious because Korean students have little knowledge of English allophones. Subphonemic variations may not be detrimental to the meaning, but more careful attention to this point is desirable for an effective control of English sounds. 4) English has many consonant clusters in a syllable, while such clusters ane not possible in Korean consonants, as the result of which Korean students tend to insert an obscure vowel between each consonant clusters. Attention to correct pronunciation is important in the beginning stage of learning English. Teachers insight into the phonemic system of English and a better guided approach in teaching English sounds are essential for a successful achievement of teaching English. A knowledge of contrastive analysis will be a great help for English teachers.
