英語指導에 있어서 文化敎育의 重要性

Abstract

교통의 발달로 인한 물질적·비물질적 세계교류의 증대는 교차문화적 의사소통을 야기시켜 사람들로 하여금 외국어의 습득을 필요하게 하였다. 그러나 외국어의 완전한 습득은 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기등의 언어기능뿐 아니라 그 언어가 사용되는 문화에 대한 깊은 지식으로 이루어 진다. 진정한 의미의 외국어 이해와 사용은 언어의 기본이고 발전의 바탕인 문화를 모르고서는 불가능하기 때문이다. 문화는 사회구성원에 의해 공유되고 전달되어진 생활양식으로 정의 할 수 있다. 그중 언어는 가장 전형적이고 대표적인 문화이다. 그러므로 다른 문화 사람과 의사소통할 때, 문화에 대한 지식이 없으면 상대방이 뜻하는 바를 완전히 이해할 수 없다. 특히, 한국과 미국같은 나라사이에 존재하는 많은 문화적 차이점은 교차문화적 의사소통을 할 때, 문화지식이 없는 한국인을 당황하게 한다. 이를 극복하기 위해 영어학습자는 영어민문화에 대한 체제적이고 조직적인 지식과 의사소통 기술을 가져야 하겠다. 대부분의 한국인 영어학습자는 한국문화속에서만 자랐기 때문에, 그 문화적 환경에서 형성된 가치와 관점으로만 영어와 영어민을 이해하려는 경향이 있다. 그 결과로 영어에 대한 부정적 태도를 형성하고 문화의 차이에서 오는 문화충격을 경험하게 된다. 그러나 영어를 습득하기 위해서 학습자는 영어와 영어민에 대한 긍정적 태도를 지녀야 하고 문화변용단계들을 성공적으로 거쳐야 한다. 또, 학습자는 두 문화사이의 사회적 거리도 작게 인식해야 한다. 외국어학습에 영향을 미치는 부정적 사회문화적 변수들은 교사의 효율적인 문화지도를 통해서 긍정적인 변수들로 변하게 할 수 있다. 영어교육에서 문화지도의 효율화를 위해, 교실은 영어민문화에 대한 정보를 최대한 줄 수 있게 꾸며져야 하고, 교재의 내용은 본국인들이 실제 사회적 상황에서 사용하는 영어로 쓰여져야 한다. 영어 교육에서 중요한 역할을 담당하는 교사는 영어에 대한 지식뿐 아니라 문화에 대한 조직적이고 체계적인 지식을 가지고 있어야 한다. 그러한 문화지식으로 문화적 차이에서 오는 학습자의 불안과 좌절의 근원을 정확히 이해·인식·지도함으로써 영어를 성공적으로 습득하도록 이끌어 줄 수 있을 것이다.;The world-wide exchange of goods and manpower forces us to master foreign languages for moles smooth communication. In mastering a foreign language, we also must have a real knowledge of the culture where the language is used besides linguistic skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is not possible to understand or use a foreign language without the knowledge of the corresponding culture on which the language is based. Culture mar be defined as ways of life which are shared and transmitted by society members, and language is recognized to be the most tyical and the most representitive factor for every culture. Therefore without the complete knowledge of the culture we can not understand all the things that are meant by an individual in other country when he says or writes in bib way. Especially between two societies, Korea and English speaking countries, so many differences in cultural aspects exist and at various situations of cross-cultural communication we often experience very confused states of understanding due to ignorance of English culture. For more smooth communication between two cultures it is suggested that we should have full and systematic knowledge of English culture and cross-communication skills. Because most of our students in English class have been brought up in a monolingual and monocultural community called Korea, thor are apt to understand every word of English from their own angles aquired during their life time under the monocultural environment. Consequently they take negative attitudes toward English and experience culture shook stemming from differences between two cultures In order to master English, a learner needs to take positive attitudes toward English and English speaking people. Then he could overcome many difficulties occurring during the accultulation stages. He should also make the social distance between his native culture and foreign culture as small as possible. In this respect, teacher through teaching students about foreign culture should play a roles in altering of negative sociocultural variables to positive ones, each of which could exert a good or a bad effect on learning of English. In conclusion, in order to enhance cultural insights in English, classroom should be full of collections and exhibits showing various sides of English Culture. Textbooks should be rich in real situataions where native speakers use English in their socio-cultural contexts. Also teachers who play the most important role in socio-cultural education of English must be well equipped with the knowledge of not only language itself but culture fraction, and direct learners to have a correct understanding of the source of his and frustration coming from cultural differences
