현행 고등학교 영어교과서의 문화교육적 배경과 내용분석

Abstract

언어는 단순한 의사전달 수단일 뿐만 아니라 인간의사고방식과 사회생활 속에서 발전한 문화적 유산이다. 그러므로 어느 집단의 고유관념이나 생활상의 특징을 이해하지 않고서는 그 집단의 언어를 완전히 습득했다고 볼 수는 없다. 언어와 문화는 이와같은 불가분의 관계이기 때문에 제 2의 언어습득은 곧 제 2의 문화습득이라 한다. 더구나 우리나라와 같이 영어를 사용하는 사람들과 어족도 다르고 문화환경도 다른 상황에서 영어를 학습하는 학생에게 있어서는 영어를 올바르게 사용하기 위해서 영어의 기능적인 면의 습득과 더불어 영어인의 문화적인 면을 이해하는 것도 중요하다. 외국어 학습에서 문화란 저절로 습득되어 지는 것이 아니라 반드시 교육을 통해 이루어질 수 있다. 영어인과의 상호문화를 배경으로한 의사전달교육을 성공적으로 달성하기 위해서는 영어사회의 문화적 배경을 교육적으로 충분히 배려한 교재가 우선적으로 필요하다. 이러한 교재는 학습자에게 알맞는 내용을 포함하고 있어야 하며 교사는 그 교재에 따른 적당한 문화교육을 학습자에게 실시하여야 한다. 영어를 외국어로서 배우는 4년째 부터는 우리나라 학생들이 다루어야 할 영어교재가 다섯가지로 나누어져 교사의 선택이 필요하게 된다. 중학교의 단일 교재와는 달리 고등학교에서는 각 교재마다 나름대로의 체제 아래 문화교육적인 내용을 싣고 있어 그 내용상 차이가 있음은 피할 수 없는 사실이다. 문화교육적인 측면에선 볼때 현행 고등학교 교과서는 영어 상용국을 한 나라에만 치중하고 있는 것을 참가해야 하며 읽기자료나 회화자료의 주제를 선정할 때 고등학교 학생수준으로 보다 폭넓고 다양한 문화소재가 필요하다. 그러므로 교사는 다섯종류의 교재를 신중하게 살펴보고 그 내용이 학생들에게 언어기능은 물론 문화를 교육하는 데 가장 적합한 것을 선택하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 자각해야 그러나 어떤 교재라도 완벽할 수는 없기 때문에 교사는 한 교재를 선택한 이후에라도 그 교재 내용만을 고집할 것이 아니라 필요하면 그 내용을 보충할 수 있는 적극적인 자세가 필요하다. 외국어 교육에 있어서 이러한 문화교육은 학생들로 하여금 목표문화와 자신의 문화와의 유사점과 차이점을 정확히 인식시키는 것이 가장 이상적이며 학습자가 올바른 자기확신과 주체성을 가지고 세계통용어인 영어를 터득한다면 이것은 나날이 발전해 가는 국제화 시대에 적극적으로 참여할 수 있는 바탕을 마련해 주는 일이 될 것이다.;Human beings have exchanged not only their profits, goods and services but also their thoughts and ideas with each other through a language. Language has developed for a long time with ideas, customs, skills, arts and tools which characterize those who use the language. Therefore, a student who wants to learn a foreign language should understand all of these, that is, its culture. Accordingly, many scholars say that learning a second language is learning a second culture, and it is very important to teach the target culture in a foreign language class. Nevertheless, it is very difficult to fully appreciate the concepts, feelings and values of other cultures. Because culture is not acquired naturally, foreign language teachers should help students recognize, internalize and gain the insight related to any similarities and differences between the target culture and their own -- especially Occidental col lure and oriental, when we teach English as a foreign language. There are several kinds of methods in teaching culture. One of them is to use the text in which involves it. Such a text should be written after deep consideration of syllabus, topic selection and contents for teaching culture. Now there are five different English textbooks for high school in Korea. There are bound to be differences between them in their contents. Therefore, when the teacher selects a textbook, he should examine it very carefully as to which textbook is most suitable for his students both in teaching culture and language He should also always bear in mind the fact that teaching and learning the culture of target language is not only one of the basic objectives but also one of the best ways to teach a foreign language. In addition, it is desirable for students to acquire such an insight in two different cultures in order to help to gain their own self-reliance in this modern international society.
