상업계고등학교의 영어교육과정 연구

Abstract

급속한 산업화와 국제화의 조류에 따라 외국어, 특히 영어교육의 중요성은 날로 높아가고 있다. 그리하여 지난 1981년의 교육과정을 깃점으로 중·고등학교에서의 영어교육의 목표는 의사소통 능력신장에 중점을 두었고 교과서에도 많은 변화가 생겼다. 그러나 더 큰 변화로 일반계 고등학교와 실업계 고등학교의 교육과정 통합을 들 수 있다. 전공계열에 따라 특성이 다르고 졸업 후의 진로가 다름에도 불구하고 교육과정을 통합시킨 데에는 문제가 있다. 우선 현 영어 교육목표인 언어의 네 기능을 통한 의사소통 능력신장이라는 목표가 상업계 학생들에게는 너무나 많은 부담감을 준다. 졸업 후의 대부분의 진로가 취업이라는 점을 생각해 볼 때, 이들에게 필요한 영어는, 실용적인 생활영어이다. 그러므로 상업계 고등학교의 교육목표는 현재의 교육목표를 좀더 세분해서 구체적으로 제시해 줄 때 비로소 실천성이 강한 목표가 되겠다. 영어 교과서에도 문제가 있다. 의사소통 능력신장이라는 목표 아래 짜여진 교과서이나 여전히 회화자료가 차지하는 비율은 전체의 15%이하이다. 대부분 대학 진학을 목표로 하고 있는 일반계 고등학교에서는 반드시 실용적인 것만을 의미하지 않기 때문에 별로 큰 문제가 되지 않으나 실용적인 생활영어가 필요한 상업계 고등학교의 경우 일상생활에는 별로 필요없는 어려운 단어나 문법까지 학습해야 하는 문제가 있다. 제Ⅰ장에서는 연구의 목적과 방법 및 제한점에 관해서 제Ⅱ장에서는 상업계 고등학교의 영어 교육과정의 문제점을 교육목표, 교육과정, 교과서를 중심으로, 설문지를 바탕으로 조사하였다. 제Ⅲ장에서는 상업계 고등학교 영어 교육과정의 개선방향을 논하였다. 현 상업계 고등학교의 영어교육의 문제점을 찾아내기 위해 의견 조사의 대상으로 서울시내 상업계 고등학교에 재직하고 있는 36 개교의 영어교사 215명과 서울시내 직장에 근무하고 있는 26개 회사의 상업계 고등학교 졸업생 66명을 택했다. 이들의 의견을 모아 상업계 고등학교의 영어 교육과정을 살펴 보았다.;The purpose of this study is to evaluate English courses at the Commercial High School (CHS). This study is conducted in view of the importance of English knowledge and its systematic education in recent years. Evaluated in this study are the CHS graduates' opinions on English courses and effective ways of English teaching. As an aid to this study, two questionnaires are distributed to 66 CHS graduates who are working and 215 English teachers at the CHS in the Seoul area. The limitation that this study covers only CHS graduates and teachers in the Seoul area. The findings and recommendations base on the questionnaires are as follows: A. Findings: 1. CHS teachers are not satisfied with the objective of English education (72.6%). The objective set is to practice communication ability through listening, speaking, reading and writing. This objective seems to be too broad and sometimes even vague. The CHS objective should emphasize the needs of everyday English. 2. The students at the CHS are different from those at ordinary high schools in terms of wishes, needs, motivations and readiness in English learning. CHS teachers say that their students should use some different kinds of English textbooks specifically designed for CHS courses (60.9%). But such books are not available so far. The comprehension ability required in the present books is too high for CHS students. 3. CHS graduates feel that they need English speaking skills at the work place (52.1%), and they also want such speaking skills to be taught during school days (85.3%). Most of the teachers, however, still use the grammar translation method (67.4%,). B. Recommendations: 1. The CHS English objective should place more emphasis on listening/speaking rather than reading/writing. 2. The level of the English textbook for CHS students should be a little lower than that of non-vocational high schools. It would be better, if the text book for CHS students would include consideration of the following point: a) Readability for CHS students should be a little lower than that of a non-vocational high school. b) Explanation on grammar may be reduced, and if possible, everyday English may be learned naturally without explanation. c)Teaching should use short sentences as well as business materials. d)The exorcise portions may include more listening and speaking tests rather than grammar tests. e)Pronunciation and intonation should not be drilled separately in the sentences. 3. CHS Teachers are suggested not to use the grammatical syllabus, the situational syllabus and the notional syllabus, if possible. Priority for teaching of skills should be given in the following order: speaking, listening, reading and writing.
