Abstract
In the late 19th C, interest on woodcut printing raised again its head in the European painting circles by the influence of the prints by Ukki yoei in Japan. At that time, such painters as Gaugin, Emile Bernard and Henri Riviere were producing woodcut prints greatly and variously and E. Munch also started to work with prints through his friendship with Lautrec and Bonnard. The prints of Munch revealed eventually the infinite possibility of materials in symbolic forms. This study is to make clear the significance and peculiarity of a printing art, which is a genre of the contemporary fine arts and unique form of expression, by studying the prints of E. Munch. Therefore, limiting the pictorial realm of E. Munch to prints, I have investigated in this study the characteristics of the motives and expressional methods in his prints, mainly on woodcut prints beside copperplate prints and lithographs. In the printing area, E. Munch's art displayed the intention toward dramatic value and reached its top, which was possible from his artistic identity to sublimate essential problems of human life through experience and express them into a grand framework. And the simple visual effect that had been implied with planes and lines and grasped as a whole became more persuasively expressional through woodcut printing, and this was through the woodcut techniques with which subjective feelings could be expressed directly and strongly without any intermediate course. And the conclusion of this study is that Munch's searching for the new possibility of woodcut printing has made him an adventurer in woodcut printing, and influenced directly German expressionistic painters including Dari and Blue Knight group. Munch's influence can be seen in the works of expressionists, that is, the suggesting and simply outlined form, the symbolic value of colour. and the peculiar sharp line-drawing techniques are the results of his influence. Much delivered the great possibility of original expression and formation to the public by making people recognize the sociality of a print more widely, and brought a turning point to the current of modern woodcut print in the early 20th century.
