English for Specific Purpoes(E.S.P.)

Abstract

E.S.P. courses can he said to be the teaching and learning of a functional and practical command of English that is 'tailored' to the specific needs and purposes of a profession or subject. E.S.P. courses are those whose objectives and contents are predetermined by the functional and practical requirements of the learner English courses for medical doctors, hotel employees, construction workers, bankers, diplomats, and courses for students pursuing a specific discipline such as physics or chemistry are only just a few of the examples of the areas in which E.S.P. can play a crucial role. While it is easy to admit to the necessity of this type of language programme, the production of E.S.P. is not such a simple matter. In other words there has not been adequate consideration put into the design of E.S.P. syllabuses published in Korea. Register snalysis, discourse analysis and analysis of learner needs, as are discussed in the thesis, would be the most fundamental and foremost considerations that must be made before beginning syllabus design. As a result of this study, I have arrived at the following conclusions : (1) There is a desperate need to change the present English educational system in Korea. Up to this point, English education has teen grammar-oriented with primary emphasis on reading and writing skills. Even at higher levels of education where the need for teaching of specialized varieties of language is even more acute, the students are subject to uniform general language courses despite the difference in their line of study. It is high time that the teaching of English at least on the college level should likewise be 'specialized' to meet the anticipated linguistic requirements of the students' professional field. (2) Private companies and other institutions around Korea are investing large amounts of money, time and effort into what can be said to be 'irrelevant' or 'ineffective' language training programmes for their employees. Instead of wasting such valuable resources, consideration should be given to the application of E.S.P. courses that are designed for each specialized department of work. (3) There is also a need for a body of specialists or research group consisting of linguists and practioners in related fields to jointly control E.S.P. materials production and carry out necessary research for the construction of E.S.P. syllabuses.;E.S.P. 는 기능적이고 실제적인 언어습득의 과정이며 특수 목적이나 대상에 적합한 언어교육의 한 방법이라 하겠다. E.S.P. 는 영어습득자의 기능적이고 실제적인 요구에 따라서 미리 학습 내용이 정해진다. 의학도, 호텔직원, 건설업계 사원, 외교관 또는 화학 물리등과 같이 특수한 분야에 종사하는 전문인이나 특정한 학술분야를 연구하는 학생들은 E.S.P. 과정이 효과적으로 적용될 수 있는 예 중의 하나이다. 특수분야의 언어교육 프로그램의 필요성은 누구나 인정하지만 적합한 E.S.P. 교재의 제작은 결코 단순한 일이 아니다. 현재까지 우리나라에서 나온 E.S.P. 교과서를 보면 그 제작에 뒤따라야 하는 연구나 고려가 결핍되어 있다. 다시 말하자면 우리나라에서 출판된 책중에는 E.S.P. 교과과정을 만족할 만큼 충분히 체계적으로 연구되어 제작된 것이 없다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 그러므로 E.S.P. 교재준비에 있어서 Register Analysis, discourse Analysis, Analysis of learner needs 등이 필히 선행되어야 한다고 생각한다. 본인은 E.S.P.에 대한 연구 결과로서 다음과 같은 결론에 도달하게 되었다. 1. 현행 우리나라 대학의 교양영어교육 제도는 E.S.P.를 도입함으로서 개선될 수 있다고 본다. 현재까지는 읽기와 쓰기를 주제로 한 문법에 치중한 영어교육이었다. 언어습득에 있어서 특수성을 띄워야 하는 고등교육의 수준에 있어서까지도 이 문제는 심각한 것으로 남아 있다. 전공분야가 전혀 다른 학생들이 함께 모여서 획일적인 교양영어 교육과정을 밟고 있는 것은 큰 문제가 아닐 수 없다. 적어도 대학과정에서는 학습내용이나 기능면에서 학생들의 전공분야의 언어적 요구를 충족시킬 수 있는 "전문적" 수준까지 끌어 올리는 것이 시급한 일이다. 2. 현재 우리나라의 많은 개인회사나 기관에서는 직원들의 영어교육에 많은 투자를 하고 있으나 아직도 만족할 만한 결과를 얻지 못하는 경우가 많다. 각 직종의 전문분야를 살린 E.S.P.의 적용은 필수적이며, 가치있는 자원의 낭비를 막는 길이라 할 수 있다. 3. 끝으로 E.S.P. 교과자료를 작성하는데 있어서 E.S.P. 교재 제작을 뒷받침 할 수 있는 전문 연구기관의 설립이 시급하다고 본다. 관계 언어학자들과 일선에서 가르치는 교사들로 구성된 기관이 E.S.P.에 대한 체계적인 연구를 하고 언어교육 프로그램을 개발하는 것이 바람직하다.
