Abstract
Historically Buddhism and the arts have held a very close and interactive relationship. Buddhism primarily concieved as a religion, had in the course of becoming a major social discipline, transformed into a total cultural art form assimilating itself with the Korean people. The ceremonial dance in Buddhism which is nevertheless a religious outlet, is a good example of the many artistic forms it undertakes to express itself. This paper is aimed with a view to analizing 'Do Ryang Gae' a form of 'Na Bi Choom' which is one of the many formats practiced in the ceremonial dances. In order to analize 'Do Ryang Gae', this paper will be basically focused at the comprehensive cultural situation Buddhism was in when it was introduced, and the many traits and types of Buddhist performances plus a study of the 'Bum Pae' which was used for dance music. Buddhist performance not only means dance itself but also all of the movements that accomodate an atmosphere for worshipping, such as decorating and cultivating the shrines and its surroundings to a majestic atmosphere, composing the 'Bum Pae' and dancing, praying the sacred words, and so forth. Every religion has its own way of practice, and it is through this each endeavors to reach its final end. In this sense we find that ceremonial practice is a mental value put into physical form and that it is an important tool in this field. With the industrialization of society, such religious practices are becoming a very rare specimen, a mentally historical artifact. Therefore in this paper, much will be alloted to explain the introduction of the Buddhist culture and the traits, types, features of the performances and finally the origin and types of 'Bum Pae'. Main reason as to how Buddhism, a foreign religion was able to dig its roots deep into the Korean arena was through the harmonious intercourse of both shamanism and Buddhism. This in time led it to become a more popular religion. Buddhist performances include 'Na Bi Choom', 'Bub Go Choom', Ba Ra Choom' and 'Ta Joo', which mostly dance and sing to the rhythm of the 'Bum Pae'. 'Do Ryang Gae' is one small phrase of the 'Chun Soo Kyung' and is composed of 7'UHNs' and 4'GWE'. Plots of the 'Do Ryang Gae' have been tried as well as for 'Bum Pae', and pictures are also added where possible. 'Do Ryang Gae' dance resembles the inter reaction of nature in the course of expressing its inner consciousness physically. In other words it all starts from a point and as it grows to a big flow it again becomes a small point from which it started. This is a meeting of the start and end, an explanation of the universe, the Samsara of life. Spirit and material, utopia and reality all meet in a sublimated form through dance and this resembles much of the thesis anti-thesis, and synthesis of the dialetical communication of the 'Do Ryang Gae'.
