줄리앙 슈나벨의 '플레이트 페인팅(Plate painting)'연구

Abstract

서구 미술계에 있어서 1980년대는 미니멀 아트, 개념미술과 같은 형식적인 모더니즘 회화에 반발하는 새로운 회화 조류가 나타난 시기였다. 1980년대 미술은 유럽과 미국에서 동시다발적으로 전개되었는데 각각 미국의 뉴 페인팅(New Painting), 독일의 신표현주의(Neo-expressionism), 이탈리아의 트랜스 아방가르드(Trans-Avantgarde), 프랑스의 자유구상(Figuration Libre) 등으로 분류된다. 이는 미술 분야에 있어서의 포스트모더니즘(Post-Modernism)으로 논의되기도 한다. 줄리앙 슈나벨(Julian Schnabel)은 1980년대 미국 미술의 주요 흐름을 형성했던 뉴 페인팅의 대표적 작가로서, 그의 작품에는 표현주의적인 성향이 강했던 당시 화풍이 잘 나타나 있다. 또한 그가 작품에 도입하는 재료, 기법, 양식 및 주제는 매우 다양하며 이러한 개방성과 실험성은 그의 작품의 특성이기도 하다. 본 논문은 슈나벨의 다양한 작업 가운데 그의 개인적인 양식이 되다 시피 한 '플레이트 페인팅(Plate Painting)'에 관한 연구이다. 플레이트 페인팅은 1978년 슈나벨이 스페인 여행 중에 귀엘 공원(Gu˝ell park) 벤치의 모자이크를 보고 착안한 것으로, 화폭에 접시 파편을 부착한 뒤 그 위에 그림을 그린 작품이다. 그의 플레이트 페인팅은 거대한 스케일, 접시들의 변화무쌍한 형태들, 두텁게 발라진 물감층, 바로크적인 색채, 그리고 표현적인 붓놀림 등이 한데 어우러져 중후하면서도 화려한 시각적 효과를 내고 있다. 이 파편 그림은 1979년 뉴욕 개인전 때 공개되어 뉴 페인팅의 시작을 알렸다. 플레이트 페인팅은 내용적인 측면에서 보면, 주로 과거의 역사, 신화, 전설, 문학, 종교 등이 작품의 주제 및 내용을 이룬다. 또한 플레이트 페인팅은 유럽의 문화적인 요소(신화, 역사 등)와 미국의 정신이 혼합되어 있다. 즉 그림의 주제나 내용, 중후한 색채의 사용, 북구 유럽의 표현주의적인 성향이 강한 분위기는 유럽적인 인상을, 거대한 스케일이나 대담하고 폭 넓은 실험성 등은 자유분방함과 개방성을 가지고 계속 뻗어 나가는 미국 장대한 확장 정신을 느끼게 한다. 슈나벨은 일상의 사물인 접시를 파편으로 만들어 화폭에 부착하는 방식을 도입하여 화면상에 새로운 질감을 창출해 냈다. 그리고 공간의 환각을 유발하는 모자이크 회화의 현대적 형태인 플레이트 페인팅의 제작을 통해 1980년대 부조적 회화의 공간 문제를 다루었다. 본 논문에서 는 이러한 그의 회화의 특성을 규명하고 있다.;It is in 1980s that new painting currency resisting formal Moderism painting such as Minimal Art, Conceptual Art in western art system is begun to be revealed. The art of 1980s was simultaneously and variously developed in Europe and America. And it is classified as 'New painting' of America, 'Neo-Expressionism' of Germany, 'Trans-Avantgarde' of Italy, 'Figuration Libre' of France etc. and argued on Post-Modernism in art sphere. Julian Schnabel is the representative artist of 'New Painting' which has formed the currency of American art in 1980s. There is the painting style with strong expressive inclination in his works. Materials, styles and subjects applied to his works are very various and, at the same time, experimental spirit are the feather of his works. This study is the research on 'Plate Painting' which has been his own personal style among his various works. Plate Painting is the work painting on support after the debris of dishes is adhered on it. This idea is taken notice of seeing mosaics of the bench in Gu¨ell park during his voyage in Spain, 1978. His Plate Painting is being shown grave and splendid visual effect in harmony with glossal scale, changeable shapes of dishes, color lay heavily painted, European color sence and expressive brushstrokes etc.. This painting on debris of dishes was opened at solo exhibitions in New York, 1979 and played a role of informing the beginning the era of 'New Painting' of America. The subject and the content of works are made up of past history, myth, legend, literature, religion, etc.. Also, Plate Painting shows the mixing feature of European culture factor(myth, history, etc.) and American spirit. This is, the subject or the content of the painting, the usage of grave color and atmosphere of the painting with strong expressive inclination of Northern Europe have the European feature. And glossal scale of the painting or adventurous and broad experimental spirit in it, etc. make us feel wild freedom and magnificent spirit of expansion of America. Schnabel created the new texture on surface by adhering to support taking the dishes of ordinary thing as debris. And he applied the special material of relief painting in 1980s through the making of Plate Painting of modern form of mosaic painting which cause special illusion. This study is focused on research of formal features of his Plate Paintings.
