이사벨 비숍(ISABEL BISHOP)의 회화세계에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 미국의 뉴욕에서 독특한 작품세계를 구축하고 1920년대부터 1980년대까지 활동하다 작고한 이사벨 비숖(Isabel Bishop)의 작품에 대하여 연구하였다. 이를위해 먼저 그녀의 작품을 시기별로 분석하여 논하였으며, 그녀의 독특한 작품세계 및 특징을 알아보고 또 그것이 현대미술 속에 어떻게 접목되어 있는가에 대하여 고찰하고 이를 주제로 접근시키려 하였다. 연구방법은 먼저 「비숖예술의 배경」 다음은 「비숖작품세계의 분석」 그리고 「비숖예술의 특성」으로 나누어 연구하였다. 여기에서 다시 「비숖예술의 배경」을 첫째, 시대적 상황 - 20세기 초반의 미국미술, 즉 팔인조(The Eight)의 출현과 아모리 쇼(Armory Show)의 영향과 20세기 중반까지의 미국미술의 변천과정을 알아보았다. 두째, 비숖성장과 이론적 배경 - 1902년에 태어나 1917년부터 미술공부를 시작하였으며 1988년 작고할때까지 독창적이고 시적인 작품 세계를 구축한 화가이었다. 이 작가의 이론적 배경은 그녀의 성장과정과 연관되어 있으며, 뵐프린(H. Wo¨lfrin)의 형식론(Formalism)과 힐데브란드(Hildebrand)의 표면의 획일성과 공간의 한계성에서 이 작가 작품원리의 기본인 "밑칠(Under Painting)"이 태동되었고 틸리히(Paul Tillich)의 망막의 이미지와 새로운 존재(The New Beeing)에서는 "상관 관계나 미완성 상태의 표현"에 영향을 받았다고 본다. 그리고 「비숖작품세계의 분석」에서는 첫째 태동기 1920년대의 "통제된 묘사시대", 두째 개화기 - 1930년대의 "선을 위주로한 드로잉 시대", 셋째 만개기 - 1940년대와 1950년대의 "일반화의 표현 시대", 넷째 원숙기 - 1960년대와 1980년대까지의 "유동성 및 은유의 표현 시대"로 분류하여 설명하였다. 다음으로 「비숖예술의 특성」에서는 첫째, 비숖작품의 특성 - 고형체(Solid)이지만 드려다 보일 것 같은 투명감 표현, 깊숙하지만 한계 있는 공간표현, 영웅상이나 극적인 상황보다 평범한 소시민들의 생활상을 표현, 모델링에 충실한 완벽한 표현보다는 불완전성이나 미완성상태의 표현 등이 비숖작품의 특성이다. 두째, 비숖예술세계 - 비숖에게 하버드 대학에서 철학과 신학을 가르치던 틸리히(Paul Tillich, 1886-1965)와 독일의 조각가로 독특한 시각예술론을 전개하였던 힐데브란드(Adolf von Hildebrand, 1847-1921)및 스위스의 미술 사학자인 뵐프린(Heinrich Wo¨lfrin, 1864-1945)의 영향을 많이 받았다. 이 작가를 로맨틱한 사실주의의 범주에 넣기도 하지만 반드시 그런것은 아니고 특정한 어느 운동 어느 유파를 초월한 독특한 작품세계를 구축하였던 작가로 여겨진다. 현대의 많은 미국 작가들이 "미국인"이란 문제점 즉, 서구에 비해 역사와 전통이 짧고 복수 민족이 모여 이룬 국가이기에 이에 야기되는 인종문제, 종교문제, 빈부의 격차, 황금 만능주의, 교육문제 등과 현대 미술에 관한 문제점 등으로 고심을 하고 있을 때에도 이 작가는 평범하고 조용히 갈길을 가며 겸손하게 이야기하고 진지하게 그렸던 것이다. 비숖은 현재 미국을 대표할만한 여류화가로서 여성만이 표현할 수 있는 독특하고 수려한 필치로 작품을 제작하였다. 그래서 작품은 시적이고, 작품의 주제는 세속적이고 평범한 것들이나 여성다운 섬세한 필치와 오묘한 시각으로 표현하여 한편의 정교한 드라마로 변형시켜 놓았다. 본 연구는 이제까지 별로 알려지지 않은 이사벨 비숖의 작품세계를 소개하여 미술을 공부하는 사람들에게 조금이라도 도움을 주려는데 목적을 두고 연구하였다.;This study analyses the art-world of the late Isabel Bishop who has created her own work-world in New York in America form the late 1920s till 1980s. For this purpose, first of all, this study analyses and criticzes her work by their periods. And searching her unique work-world and characteristics of her work are grafted in modern art, and these elements acced to the theme of this study. This study proceeds as follows: The sources of Bishop's art, the development of Bishop's art-world and the characteristics of Bishop's art. First, in the part of the Bishop's art sources this study shows ① the artist's development and her art world: born 1902 and began to study art in 1917, she has created most original and poetic works until her death in 1988. ② Historical background-The notable early twenty century's American art trend such as the appearance of the Eight and the influeness of Armory Show, and the various art trends in 20th century are. Second, the development of Bishop's art-world, this part indicates the proceeding patterns of her work ① Birth-period of controlled description, ② Flowering-Period of linear Drawing, ③ Unfoldings - Perid of general expressions, ④ plenitude - The artist described as the period of "flowness and the expression of Metapher". Third, in observing the characteristics of her works, this study show the following; ① The characteristics of Bishop's work-The presentions of the sensitiveness which is solid but transparent, of the deep yet limited space, of the lives of the commons not those of the heroes or dramatic situation, nd of imperfection and insecurity. ② Bishop's art-world-Bishop was influenced by Paul Tillich(1886-1965), a professor of philosophy and theology in Havard, A dolf von Hildebrand(1847-1921) a German sculptor who has developed his unique visual art-world, and Heinrich Rolfrin(1864-1945) a wall known Swiss art-historian. Although some art historian includes her into the category of romantic realism, it is evident any specific movements. Even though a large number of American artist devoted their life to the matters such as racial problems, religion, the gap of the poor and the rich, resulted from their shorter history than that of Europe, and the problems of modern art, Isabel Bishop has searched for her own art-world calmly with modesty and seriousness. Bishop's works being poetic, and the theme of her works being plain and secular, she pursued her works with mystery and transformed them into skillful dramas. This study is aimed at providing any help for the people studying paintings by introducing relatively unknown Bishops art-world despite her accamplishments.
