Abstract
The goal of English Education is to develop the four skills--listening, speaking, reading, and writing. However, because of the influence of structuralism and audio-lingual approach, English language education has focused on spoken language and speaking skills, and writing skill has been regared merely as a supplementary one. With the appearance of rationalism, however, there is a new understanding of written language and writing, and there has been more research on the new methods of teaching writing skills. It has been asserted that writing has its own place as a method of communication and that writing should be taught with a focus on its own devices. The traditional method of teaching writing skills can be divided into controlled writing that focuses on the accuaracy of each sentence and free writing that is concerned with the whole structure or organisation. However, it has been proved that each of the two methods cannot contribute to the ultimate goal of writing itself. Neither the mechanical practice of each sentence for accuracy nor free writing practice only with the topic given without any detailed instruction or help can develope practical and efficient writing skills. Recently, there has been a call for methods of teaching writing skills that bridge the gap between controlled writing and free writing, and consequently many kinds of new methods have been introduced. The special features of the new methods are to make students recognize the communicative function of writing through practicing writing not with the sentences but with the texts, to develop the ability to write appropriately in each circumstance by giving a particular situation at each writing practice, and to introduce many kinds of rhetorical devices of writing step by step from the beginning. Teaching writing skills in Korean middle schools is limited to the simple and mechanical controlled writing level and the writing part of the main texts of middle school English books should be developed. The principle of English language education in Korea is primarily to develop listening and speaking skills, but in the long run written language as well as spoken language is very important. Moreover, speaking skills can be developed more accurately through practicing writing. In this thesis, I suggest some models of teaching writing skills based on recent theories by using existing Korean middle school English text books. They are divided into meaningful copying, reinforcement, devising communication tasks, narrative writing, sentence linking and sequencing, and description. Using this kind? of models at the early stage in teaching writing skills will give students chances to practice writing various kinds of tents and to understand the communicative functions or writing activity. The goal of English language education will be fully acheived by developing not only speaking skills but writing skills.
