중학교 영어교과서를 이용한 의사전달활동 모형

Abstract

최근들어 어린이의 모국어와 외국어의 습득과정에 대한 연구가 다각적으로 진행되면서 이러한 연구의 결과는 외국어 교수방법에 몇가지 통찰점을 던져주고 있다. 즉, 어린이는 그들의 타고난 인지적·언어적 장치를 이용하고 의사전달의 목적을 갖고 언어환경에 적극적으로 참여함으로써 언어를 습득한다는 것이다. 이러한 언어발달과정에 대한 의사전달적 관점은 외국어도 의사전달적인 면에서 교수해야 한다는 것을 암시한다. 일찍기 언어학자들은 어린이의 언어발달은 대체로 자연주의자들이 주장하는 단순히 언어환경에 노출되면 어린이는 타고난 언어습득장치를 가지고 자연스럽게 언어를 습득한다거나 행동주의자들의 말처럼 어린이는 주위의 언어를 모방, 반복등의 습관형성으로 언어를 습득한다고 믿었었다. 그러나 최근의 상호작용적, 의사전달적 언어발달의 관점은 우리의 영어교사들에게 우리의 영어교실도 의사전달적이 되어야 한다는 것을 시사해준다. 우리의 영어교실은 교사의 구조분석에 입각한 문법중심, 교사중심의 기술학습활동이 대부분이었다. 대부분의 영어교사들은 언어체계를 단계별로 분리해서 낮은 단계부터 완벽하게 언어형식을 학습한다면 자동적으로 높은 단계의 언어사용이 가능하리라고 믿었기 때문에 학습자에게 언어기술의 완전학습에 초점을 맞추었다. 또한 유창한 언어사용능력보다는 정확한 문법적 문장의 생성능력을 강조하였다. 언어는 의사전달의 수단이기 때문에 의사소통의 필요에 입각해서 언어학습이 이루어질 때 동기화가 이루어짐은 물론이고 언어학습을 성공적으로 성취할 수 있다는 것이 최근 언어학의 주장이다. 그러나 우리의 영어교실은 아직도 의사전달의 목적과는 거리가 있는 언어체계에 초점을 둔 학습과 교수라는 전통답습의 교실임을 부인할 수 없다. 언어체계의 완벽한 학습은 의사전달활동시 자발적인 표현을 가능하게 하는 것은 물론이지만 의사전달활동의 실제 기회가 없는 언어지식에 관한 학습 만으로는 의사전달의 수단으로써 언어를 사용하는 능력개발은 어려울 것이다. 그러므로 영어교사는 학습자에게 영어를 실제 의사소통의 목적으로 사용하는 기회를 가능한 한 많이 제공함으로써 언어사용을 통한 의사소통 능력을 개발시켜야 할 것이다. 이러한 의사소통능력개발의 목적을 달성하기 위해서 본 논문은 현행 교과서를 토대로 중학교에서 활용할 만한 의사전달활동모형을 만들어 제시하고 있다. 이 모형은 다시 구체적으로 의견일치활동, 지시따르기활동, 의사소통게임, 이야기만들기활동, 개인적인 의사교환활동, 가상적인 역할분담활동, 문제해결활동 등으로 나뉘어졌다. 이와 같은 방법으로 중학교에서 의사전달활동을 활용한다면 학습자의 자연스런 언어 습득 뿐만 아니라 의사전달능력도 함께 개발될 수 있을 것이다.;Recent research into the processes of children's first and second language development has yielded a number of insights in teaching the second language. Earlier theories of children's language development were either strongly nativist or strongly behaviorist. The former says that children acquire language through mere exposure and through the activation of an innate language acquisition device. The latter insists that children develop language by having their verbal behavior conditioned and shaped by parents and other adult teachers. The recent multidimensional studies suggest that children's language development is a strongly interactive process, one which relies not only on specfic cognitive and linguistic mechanisms, but also on the child's active participation in a linguistic environment attuned to the child's communicative needs. This interactive, communicative view of language development gives the English teachers a hint that our English teaching model should be shifted into the communcative language teaching one. The model underlying most teaching in our English classroom is a form of skill learning, That is based on the assumption that if we require learners to produce predetermined pieces of language drills, this productive activity will lead them to internalise the system underlying the language to the point where they can operate the system without conscious reflection. So the focus of the classroom activity is on lingustic forms to be learnt rather than on meanings to be communicated. Our English calssroom is also undoubtedly dominated by the teaching and learning the language system far from the communicative needs of the language. What has been practised in most language classes is useful for facilitating spontaneous expression, but ultimately ability to converse in a new language. We must, therefore, provide learners with ample oppotunities to use the language themselves for communication purpose. We must also remember that we are ultimately concerned with developing the learners; ability to take part in the process of communicating through language, rather than with their perfect mastery of individual structures. From this perspective, this thesis focuses on the communicative activities. The communicative activities can not only give learners the oppotunities to use language for communication but develop the learners' internal processing mechanism. In this thesis we tried to look for various ways of promoting oral communication in the classroom.
