It is important to teach English, especially English reading, to students in high school in Korea. Considering that almost all the high school students aim at going on to prestigious universities, it is understandable that among the four language skills - reading, writing, speaking, listening - the reading ability is counted as the most important one in class nowadays. As likely more and more emphasis is given on the reading, there is still a need for more studies carried out on the diverse methods of reading, which would help the learners to motivate themselves and be interested in reading. Meanwhile, the educational effects of using newspapers have been proved by several studies, and it would be a good opportunity for the high school students, too, to learn foreign language by reading a newspaper of that language by doing activities. Therefore, this study is mainly concerned with using English newspapers in English reading in EFL classes. This study aims at examining the effects of two newspaper reading activities using English newspapers in English reading and the attitudes of students after the experiment is carried out. For the purpose of this study, the experiment was carried out over 10 class periods, with 3 different classes students who were divided into two experimental groups and one control group. Each group was divided into two subgroups according to their reading proficiency level: the lower level, and the upper level. Experimental group 1 had to rearrange the given sentences or paragraphs in an article, which was jumbled up by the teacher beforehand, so that they could make sense of it when read. Experimental group 2 had to unpack the information of the given paragraph, and try to pull out as many facts as possible. The control group used previous teaching methods, such as focusing on translation, explanation of grammatical points, and comprehension check. According to the results of the study, we were able to identify several trends. First, all the three groups showed an increase in their marks on the post reading ability test. The experimental group 2 were the most improved group, followed by experimental group 1 and then the control group, which meant that using English newspapers in the reading class is much more effective for the students to improve their reading ability than the previous reading class methods. Second, both levels of experimental group 2 showed much greater increase in the marks than both levels of experimental group 1. When comparing just the upper level and lower level of students in each group, it turned out that lower level students showed more of an increase than the upper level. It means that using English newspapers in an English reading class is more effective for both level proficiencies, especially for the lower level students. Third, both experimental groups 1 and 2 had significant differences in the marks in lower-level processes of reading than the higher-level processes, which means that using English newspapers in English reading class is effective for both lower-level and higher-level reading processes, especially for the lower-level. Fourth, the lower-level reading processes marks of the upper level students in experimental group 1 and the higher-level reading processes marks of the upper level students in experimental group 2 showed a significant increase. Generally, the lower level students in each group showed much improvement in both reading processes than the upper level students. Finally, using English newspapers in a reading class had a positive influence on the students' motivation and interest in reading English. Experimental group 2 showed the most change in attitude in the area of over-all motivation in English and the area of attitude toward the English class. Also, experimental group 1 showed the most change in attitude in the area of English reading. In conclusion, the results of this study have shown that using English newspapers in an English reading class has positive effects on students' reading ability and attitude, and is also more effective for the students compared to the previous reading class methods. However, the teacher needs to be cautious in selecting more familiar and interesting subjects to motivate the students, and make sure that preparatory activities, such as vocabulary learning related to the subject or pre-reading activities should be done before reading the newspaper articles. What's more, it was also found that the effect of using English newspapers in a reading class differs according to the different level of proficiency of the students and the types of newspaper reading activities, so different types of many activities using English newspapers should be developed in different levels for the both upper and lower level students to participate in.;한국의 고등학교에서 영어 수업, 그 중에서도 영어 읽기가 차지하는 비중은 매우 크다.
