The importance of communicative competence in English has been emphasized much more than before, and recent English curriculum has focused on developing practical English skills. However, the Korean English curriculum focuses on the Korean SAT and, therefore, it is very difficult to balance between the four skills in English (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Many of Korean English classes spend time on reading and listening and nowadays, there has been an emphasis on teaching speaking skills. However, writing skills are barely taught in English classes. On the other hand, writing activities have been included in many of the performance-base tests and, thus, it is important to prepare systematic writing activities within an English class. Feedback holds an important part in a second language writing class. It helps to check students' level of understanding and also to correct errors. Among the errors are many different types of feedbacks. Self monitoring feedback is a way of asking questions of things that students find difficult by having them annotated. It helps to develop learner autonomy and enables an ongoing conversation between the teacher and students. There are some studies which show that self monitoring feedback helps to develop English writing skills. Therefore, I believe that there is a need to incorporate this technique in the Korean English classroom. This study is mainly concerned with using self monitoring feedback in EFL classes. This study aims to examine the effect of self monitoring feedback on the different languages used and on different levels of students in high school. The students were trained to use self monitoring feedback in their writing for six weeks. The students composed three different compositions and each topic was drafted three times. To determine the effect of self monitoring feedback, students pre and post writing activities were examined with the analysis of the improvement on each draft and the frequency of the annotations made on each draft. Afterward, a survey was conducted to find out the students' attitudes toward self monitoring feedback. According to the results of the study, self monitoring feedback was most effective when the language used in the annotations was Korean. This is because students were able to describe their questions and needs freely without language difficulty. It was also found that students who wrote Korean annotations were able to look beyond the linguistic aspect of writing and focus on more global aspects such as the content and the organization of the composition. Therefore, self monitoring in Korean would help students more effectively when it comes to expressing their needs. Second, self monitoring feedback was also found to be more effective with higher level students. This phenomenon was especially evident in lowe level learners in the Korean annotation group. This is probably because it was very difficult for them to express their thoughts in English. However, lower level students in the Korean annotation group were found to be more active in using self monitoring feedback. Therefore, lower level students would benefit more from self monitoring feedback in their mother tongue. Third, the result of frequency in annotations used were different among the different language groups and different level students. Korean annotation groups wrote more annotations in all areas such as content, organization, vocabulary and grammar. This is probably due to the language difficulty in English. As for high level students, they wrote many balanced annotations in each area. However, lower level students in the Korean annotation group wrote far more annotations than the English annotation groups. Moreover, lower level students in Korean annotation groups were able to focus on global contents as well. Therefore, it is safe to say that English annotations are less effective than Korean annotation in English composition in Korean high school students. Fourth, the responses toward the teacher's feedback were different among the different language groups and different level students. A High level student in the Korean annotation group was most enthusiastic about using annotation as a writing strategy, using it to find out one's weaknesses and trying to improve in that part. A low level student in the Korean annotation group took more time to get used to the idea of annotating. However, after several attempts, the student was able to use annotations to make more specific comments about one's writing. As for Korean annotation group, they were more reluctant to correct their writing after the teacher's feedback. They were prone to make corrections on parts such as vocabulary and grammar, but not on content or organization. A low level student in Korean annotation group had to resort to Korean to get the meaning across in annotation. In conclusion, self monitoring feedback has positive effects on English composition. For high school students, it is most effective when the language used in annotations is Korean. However, there is a need to develop training session for using self monitoring feedback in class. Moreover, it is especially necessary for lower level students to have a longer period of training. With this in mind, variety of training session and continuous incorporation will help students to improve in English composition-
