Abstract
Transnationalism is a phenomenon in which migrants build and maintain links between the two countries by participating in the development and change of the home country and the host country(Basch, Schiller, & Blanc, 1993; Vertovec, 2009; Wimmer & Schiller, 2002). The practice of transnationalism is mostly expressed in socio-cultural, economic, and political dimensions(Portes et al., 1999). This study aims to examine the practice of transnationalism in the lives of Filipino married immigrant mothers and explores their child rearing through the practice of transnationalism. The research questions selected according to these research objectives are as follows. 1. What is the practice of transnationalism in the life of Filipino married immigrant mothers? 2. How is the practice of transnationalism and child rearing of Filipino married immigrant mothers? The participants of this study were 4 married immigrant mothers from the Philippines, their 4 children aged 4-5, and 4 homeroom teachers of the children. The researcher studied four cases using the case study method, as one of the qualitative research method. Data were collected through in-depth and group interviews with mothers, interviews with infants, interviews with teachers, and participation observations at early childhood institution from July 2021 to February 2022, The data analysis proceeded according to the steps of collecting, classifying, restructuring, interpreting, and deciding conclusions. The practice of transnationalism at the economic dimension showed differences in the frequency and amount of remittance depending on whether mothers had a job, the level of health of their parents, and whether other family members supported them. appeared differently. The practice of transnationalism at the political dimension differed according to the frequency of conversations with family members about the Philippine election, and it was found to be less practiced when it was negative for Philippine politics. Second, it was found that the Filipino married immigrants mothers experienced pregnancy, childbirth, and child rearing through the practice of transnationalism at the socio-cultural dimension. As examining the commonalities among the cases, in the pregnancy and childbirth process, it is shown that the Filipino married immigrant mothers received various help in pregnancy and childbirth by practicing transnationalism at the socio-cultural level using their family network through contact with their Filipino families and using the community network of Filipino married immigrant mothers. Also in the the child-rearing process, it is shown that children are encouraged to become acquainted with the Philippine culture and have a positive attitude toward their mother country by practicing transnationalism at the socio-cultural dimension through contacting with Filipino family, gathering community family in Filipino married immigrants mothers, and communicating with early childhood education institutions. As examining the differences among the cases, it was found that there was a difference in receiving help from family and community groups for pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum care according to the degree or period of difficulties during pregnancy and childbirth. In the child-rearing process, it was found that the degree of experience differed depending on the mother's employment status or their will to teach when children experienced the Filipino language or Filipino play. Also, when the communication between early childhood teachers and Filipino married immigrant mothers was disconnected, it was difficult that the center connect with the family. As such, Filipino married immigrant mothers tried to balance the bidirectional transnationalism between the Philippines and Korea in the process of practicing transnationalism in their lives. While maintaining ties with Filipino family, Filipino married immigrant mothers often interacted with their family-in-law and thought that their current families(husband, children) were the most important. The Filipino married immigrant mothers were in charge of household chores and raising children at home, and were positive in learning Korean and Korean culture and experiencing Korean culture with children. By frequently communicating with the homeroom teacher of the early childhood education institution the child attends, efforts were made for the growth and development of the children. In this study, by using a case study method with in-depth interviews by Filipino married immigrant mothers, the background and process of mothers transcending time and space to practice transnationalism, and concerns raised while raising children in Korea were willingly listened to. In addition, by describing these cases in the form of a story, the process of practicing transnationalism from marriage immigration to the process of raising children is grasped according to the flow, and through this, it is explored in detail the positive effects that children from married immigrant families can have in their daily lives in relation to their mother's country. Furthermore, it is significant in that it provided an opportunity to think about the role and plan of an early childhood education institution for a married immigrant mothers who practice transnationalism and their children. The implications of this study are as follows. It is needed to support the practice of transnationalism by married immigrant mothers, but to achieve a two-way balance between the Philippines and Korea. It is necessary to help children form the positive self-identity by allowing children to naturally come into contact with the culture of their mother's country through their mother's practice of transnationalism. Lastly, early childhood education institutions need to increase direct communication with mothers to help them raise their children.
