무용창작작품「시선의 무게」에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 논문은 2020년 6월 11일 이화여자대학교 홀 1에서 발표한 본 연구자의 무용 작품 「시선의 무게」의 안무 과정과 공연까지의 전 과정을 분석하고 연구한 논문이다. 무용 작품 「시선의 무게」는 수잔 영의 소설 『깨어난 장미 인형들』에서 감명을 받아 타인의 시선에 의해 고통받는 인간의 모습을 담아낸 작품이다. 이에 따라 본 논문의 서론에서는 연구의 목적과 필요성, 연구 방법 및 제한점을 밝히고, 본론에서는 무용 작품의 핵심 개념을 서술하고 무용 작품「시선의 무게」를 분석한다. 특히 연구자는 「시선의 무게」를 구성하는 예술적 요소와 움직임 분석에 중점을 두고 작품을 연구하고자 하였다. 연구자의 무용 작품 「시선의 무게」의 안무 의도는 다음과 같다. 수잔 영의 소설 『깨어난 장미 인형들』의 인물들이 학교로부터 여성성을 강요받고 순응하는 모습에서 타인의 시선을 의식하며 고통 속에 살아가는 현대 사회 인간의 모습을 겹쳐 보게 되었다. 그때 느끼는 인간의 심리적 압박감과 감정의 무게를 표현하고자 작품의 제목을 ‘시선의 무게’로 하였다. 그리고 연구자는 단순히 소설의 줄거리를 구현함이 아닌, ‘타인의 시선을 의식하며 살아가는 인간이 과연 주체적으로 삶을 살아간다고 할 수 있을까?’에 대한 근본적인 물음으로부터 작품의 안무를 시작했다. 이를 통해 타인의 시선이 존재하더라도 내면세계에 집중하는 인간은 생명력 있는 삶을 살아갈 수 있다는 것을 예술 작품으로 말하고자 하였다. 1장의 주제는 <억압>이다. 학교로부터 여성다움을 요구받는 학생들의 억압된 상황에서 현대인이 타인의 시선에 의해 고통받는 모습을 발견하였다. 이를 수축하는 움직임과 스탠드 전등 오브제를 통해 담아내었다. 그리고 2장에서는 타인의 시선으로부터 벗어나 자신의 내면세계를 바라보고자 하지만, 여전히 존재하는 타인의 시선에 대한 두려움의 감정을 밖으로 에너지를 분출하는 움직임과 길 조명을 사용하여 주제 의식을 담아내었다. 마지막 3장에서는 타인의 시선으로부터 벗어나 자신의 내면세계에 집중하여 완전한 ‘나’의 존재를 찾아가는 생명력 있는 인간의 모습을 나타내고자 하였다. 시선을 의미하는 빛이 사라지고, 자유롭게 무대 공간을 활보하는 것을 표현하면서 소설의 희망적인 결말을 표현했다. 하지만 작품의 마지막에서 안무자는 현실감 있는 표현과 자신의 내면세계에 더 집중하는 인간의 모습을 강조하고자 빛을 다시 켜고 무용수가 그 빛 안으로 들어가면서 현실에서 타인의 시선은 완전한 소멸이 불가능함을 극적으로 연출하였다. 결과적으로 안무자는 작품 「시선의 무게」를 통해 타인의 시선과 함께 현대 사회를 살아가는 인간은 어떤 사회의 요구나 타인이 정해준 길에 맞추어 살아가지 않고, 자신의 내면세계에 집중하여 주체적이고 생명력 있는 삶을 살아가야 함을 말하고자 하였다. 또 본 연구를 통해 연구자는 작품을 분석하여 안무자의 예술관을 구체화 시키고, 앞으로의 안무자가 나아가야 할 방향을 조망해보는 것에 의의가 있다.;This thesis presents with the study and analysis of the entire process from choreographing to performing「Weight of sight」, the researcher’s dance work presented on 11 June 2020 at Ewha Womans University Hall 1. The dance work 「Weight of sight」is based on Suzanne Young’s novel 『Girls with Sharp Sticks』and shows the sufferings of people due to other’s views on them. In this thesis, the purpose and necessity of the research, as well as the methodology and its limitation are identified in the introduction, while the key concepts are described and the dance work「Weight of sight」is analysed in the main body. The researcher especially sought to study「Weight of sight」focusing on the analysis of artistic elements and movements that constitute the work. The intention of the choreography of the researcher’s dance work 「Weight of sight」is as follows. The way the characters in Suzanne Young’s novel『Girls with Sharp Sticks』are imposed feminity by school and conform to it seemed to overlap with how people in the contemporary being self-conscious, live in pain. In order to express such psychological pressure and emotional burden that people feel, the dance work has been titled ‘Weight of sight’. Then, instead of merely portraying the summary of the novel, the researcher began choreographing the work starting from the fundamental question, Can we say that humans, who are self-conscious, live lives independently? It was sought to convey through an art work that although there may exist others’ views, one who focuses on the inner world may live with vitality. The theme of Act 1 is <Oppression>. The contemporary people’s suffering due to others’ views on them was found in the oppressed situation of students where they were demanded feminity by the school. This was expressed by contracting movements and the use of an objet. In Act 2, the fear of others’ views, which remain despite an effort to get free from them, was shown using rectangular light and movements that spurt out energy. Finally in Act 3, it was attempted to show the image of a person who has vitality, ridding oneself from others’ views and concentrates on the inner world, thereby finding the perfect ‘self’. The optimistic ending of the novel was expressed by light, which represents other’s views, disappearing and the dancer freely striding around the stage. At the very end of the work, however, as the choreographer intended to emphasize a realistic representation and the image of the person concentrating harder on one’s inner world, the light was switched back on and the dancer entered into it, dramatically portraying that others’ views cannot disappear completely. In conclusion, through 「Weight of sight」, the choreographer sought to convey that people living in the modern society should not comply with certain demands of the society or follow the path set by others, but should live as autonomous and vital beings by focusing on their inner world. In addition, it is significant that by analyzing the work through this research, the researcher has made the choreographer’s view of art more concrete, and has contemplated the direction that one should advance in.
