프란츠 카프카의 『변신』을 바탕으로 한 무용창작작품「회유하는 시선」에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날 현대사회에서는 산업기술이 하루가 다르게 발달함에 따라 인간은 더 없는 편리함을 누릴 수 있게 되었지만 인간관계에 있어 소통의 단절이나 이기심 과열, 존재가치 상실 등 소외현상은 갈수록 더욱 심화되었다. 이로 인해 결국 인간은 자기 존재의 중요성을 잃어가게 되고 타인의 시선에 쉽게 휘둘리는 연약한 존재가 되어 불안함과 고독함을 느끼게 된다. 이에 연구자는 인간소외 현상으로 인해 상실한 주체성을 회복하고자 실존주의에 대해 탐구함으로써 개인의 희망적인 삶의 메시지를 전달하고자 하였다. 본 연구는 프란츠 카프카(Franz Kafka, 1883-1924)의 소설 『변신(Die Verwandlung, 1916)』의 텍스트를 바탕으로 안무한 무용창작작품 「회유하는 시선」(2019)에 관한 연구로서, 기회주의적이고 이기적인 사람들로부터 느끼게 되는 소외감을 표현하였다. 소설에서 다루어지고 있는 주인공 그레고르 잠자(Gregor Samsa)가 사람들의 혐오로부터 느끼는 소외현상에 주목하여 이를 움직임으로 다루었다. 작품화하기에 앞서『변신』에 나타나는 프란츠 카프카의 문학적 특징인 소외현상을 철학적 관점을 통해 인간 실존주의에 대한 이론적 연구를 진행하였다. 이를 바탕으로 작품의 주제 및 내용, 공간 사용 및 장면별 구성, 무용수의 이동경로와 움직임, 오브제의 의미를 통해 작품 「회유하는 시선」을 안무하였으며, 작품의 주제를 효과적으로 전달하고자 무대의 공간사용과 조명에 차이를 두었고 오브제에 상징적인 의미를 부여하여 타인의 시선에 얽매이는 자아를 부각시켜 표현하고자 하였다. 작품에서는 소외된 인간이 자신의 존재가치에 대해 의구심을 품고 삶의 방향성을 잃은 모습에서 벗어나 인간의 주체적인 모습을 찾는 내용을 세 개의 장으로 나누어 전개하였다. 첫째, 1장에서는 대화 단절로 인한 관계의 해체를 표현하였다. 이를 위해 움직임의 공간을 타인의 시선에 의해 자신을 스스로를 가두었던 부정적 의미를 상징하는 A공간으로 제한시키고, 오브제인 사과를 들어 올리거나 팔을 뻗어 잡는 등 손과 팔의 움직임과 오브제를 최소화하여 주체성을 잃어버린 자아의 수동적인 모습을 나타내었다. 둘째, 2장은 소외현상으로 인해 인간이 느끼는 불안과 고독을 표현하고 주체성에 대한 깨달음을 얻어 자기극복을 암시하는 부분으로 그려내었다. 따라서 공간 설정을 무대 전체로 확장시키고 오브제의 위치를 긍정을 상징하는 B공간으로 이동하여 주체성을 회복하고자 하는 개인의 의지를 묘사하였다. 작품이 전개됨에 따라 움직임의 범위를 점점 확대하고 테이블을 세워놓고 뒤에서 감싸 안거나 손으로 짚고 내려가는 등 움직임을 다양하게 구사하고 빠른 템포가 있는 음악에 엑센트를 주어 긴장감을 고조시켰다. 마지막으로 3장은 이전까지의 움직임과 음악, 그리고 오브제로부터 최고조로 끌어올렸던 분위기에서 벗어나 B공간에서의 무용수의 움직임을 간결화하였다. 이를 통해 타인의 시선으로부터 자유로워지고 자아에 대한 확신을 얻어 적극적으로 변화하는 인간의 모습을 표현하고자 하였다. 작품의 마지막 부분에서 바닥에 놓여 있던 사과를 테이블 위에 올려놓고 무용수가 자유를 상징하는 카디건 상의를 들어 올리는 동작의 장면을 통해 타인의 시선에서 벗어나 진정한 나를 찾는 모습을 상징적으로 나타내고자 하였다. 이처럼 프란츠 카프카의 『변신』의 텍스트를 바탕으로 창작되어진 무용작품「회유하는 시선」은 척박한 현대사회에서 외적 요인에 쉽게 흔들리는 나약한 인간 주체성에 대한 비판의식으로부터 시작해 삶에 대한 주인으로서 내적 요인에 집중하여 자신이 나아가야 할 능동적 모습을 찾는 방향성을 전하고자 하였다.;Today in the modern society, humankind enjoys the luxury of more comfortable life than ever as industrial technology rapidly develops day by day, but alienation phenomena, such as communication gap in human relationship, excessive selfishness, and loss of existence value, have worsened as time went by. As a result, humans have been losing the importance of their very existence, feeling insecure and lonely as they become more vulnerable beings who get easily swayed by the eyes of others. Therefore, the researcher intended to deliver a message of hope for life by investigating existentialism through this paper in order to contribute in restoring identity and independent thinking lost by humanalienation phenomenon. This study examines on a newly choreographed work 「Conciliating Gaze」(2019) choreographed based on the text of a novel 『Metamorphosis』 by Franz Kafka, which expressed a sense of alienation that people experience from opportunistic and selfish people. This choreograph work focused on the alienation phenomenon that Gregor Samsa, the protagonist in the novel, felt from people's hatred and expressed this feeling into movement. Before making a dance performance, this study conducted a theoretical research on human existentialism from a philosophical viewpoint by investigating the alienation phenomenon, a literary characteristic that appears in 『Metamorphosis』 by Franz Kafka. 「Conciliating Gaze」 was choreographed in light of the subject and contents of dance performance, spatial use and composition by scene, movement path and motion of dancers, and meaning of object, differentiating the use of space and lighting on the stage to effectively convey the theme, and highlighting the self that is bound to other people's eyes by imparting a symbolic meaning to the object. The dance performance unfolds the story of marginalized people finding self-reliance of human beings by becoming free from the loss of direction of life after having doubts about their own value of existence into three chapters. First, chapter 1 expressed the dissolution of a relationship caused by the break in conversation. To this end, this study limited the space of movement to space A that symbolizes the negative meaning of locking oneself up by the gaze of others, and expressed passive image of a self who has lost his or her identity by minimizing hand and arm movements when picking up an apple, the object, or holding arms out. Secondly, chapter 2 expressed anxiety and loneliness that people feel by alienation phenomenon and represented an image that suggests self-conquest by finding enlightenment of identity. Therefore, the individual will to restore identity was described by extending stage setting and moving object to space B that symbolizes positivity. A sense of tension was built up by offering a wider range of movements, such as putting a table up and hugging it from behind or going down the table with hands, and stimulating the accent with the faster tempo music. Lastly, the movements of dancers in space B are simplified in chapter 3 by getting out of the previous movements, fast-paced music and the mood that has been raised to the highest level from object. The performance intended to express an image of people becoming active and enthusiastic by becoming free from other people's attention and gaining confidence in themselves. An image of finding one’s real self away from the eyes of others was intended to be expressed through the scene of a dancer picking up an apple from the floor, putting it on the table, and lifting the top of a cardigan that symbolizes freedom. In summary, the newly choreographed work「Conciliating Gaze」 based on the text of a novel 『Metamorphosis』 by Franz Kafka intended to convey the direction of finding the proactive side of oneself by focusing on internal factors as the master of his or her life starting with a sense of criticism of weak human identity that gets swayed easily by external factors in harsh modern society.
