미셸 푸코의 자기배려 개념을 바탕으로 한 무용창작작품「Switch on」에 관한 연구

Abstract

오늘날 현대 사회는 디지털 기술의 발달로 인해 정보의 빠른 전달이 가능하게 되었으며 이를 통해 현대인들은 편리하고 풍요로운 삶을 살게 되었다. 그러나 기술 발달은 개인의 사생활 침해의 문제를 낳았고 현대인들은 서로를 감시하는 감시 사회 속에서 살게 되었다. 자신이 감시받고 있다는 생각은 자기 감시를 일으키게 되며 자신의 행동을 통제하게 만든다. 이런 사회를 영국의 공리주의 철학자 제레미 벤담(Jeremy Bentham, 1748-1832)은 판옵티콘으로 빗대어 설명하였다. 판옵티콘 사회에서는 모든 인간이 규격화되어 개인의 주체성을 잃어버리게 되는 문제가 발생한다. 연구자는 이에 주체성을 잃어버리고 획일화되며 살아가는 현대인들의 문제를 극복하기 위해 자기배려 실천의 필요성을 알리고자 하였다. 본 연구는 미셸 푸코(Michel Fouacult, 1926-1984)의 자기배려 개념을 바탕으로 한 무용창작작품 「Switch on」(2019)에 대한 분석으로 주제 및 내용, 공간 사용 및 장면별 구성, 무용수의 이동경로와 움직임, 오브제의 의미를 중점적으로 다루어 보이지 않는 시선에 사로잡힌 자신을 배려하며 주체성을 회복하며 개성을 찾아가야 한다는 내용으로 작품을 총 세 장으로 구성하여 전개하였다. 작품의 1장에서는 감시받는 삶 속에서 나타나는 인간의 무기력함과 불안한 심리를 표현하였다. 이를 표현하기 위해 하수 뒷공간을 자유가 있는 A공간으로 설정하고 자유의 공간에서 오브제인 스탠드가 있는 B공간으로 이동하며 무기력한 모습을 나타내었다. 낮은 무게 중심의 엎드린 동작을 반복적으로 사용하여 벗어날 수 없는 틀에 갇힌 인간의 모습을 표현하고자 하였다. 또한, 쇠 문 소리와 체인 소리의 효과음을 통해 감시 사회에 갇혀 사는 인간의 모습을 강조하여 나타내었다. 2장에서는 보이지 않는 시선 속에 갇힌 자신을 인지하게 되며 벗어나기 위해 시도하고 자기배려 개념을 통해 자신의 주체성을 재확립하고자 하는 모습을 표현하고자 하였다. 상수 앞을 억압을 나타내는 B공간으로 설정하였고 상수 앞에서 하수 뒤를 잇는 사선 조명을 사용해 점차 A공간인 자유의 공간으로 이동하며 인간으로서 주체성을 되찾아가는 과정을 보여주었다. 감옥같이 닫혀 있는 틀에서 벗어나고 싶은 의지의 모습을 발을 구르는 움직임과 깜박거리는 조명 효과를 사용하여 1장과 2장을 구분 지었다. 모자를 응시하며 자신으로 시선을 회귀하는 모습을 통해 자기배려를 실천하는 모습을 나타내고자 하였다. 또한, 규율을 상징하는 모자를 구기고, 짓밟고, 던지는 움직임을 통해 순응하지 않으려는 강한 의지가 담긴 모습을 표현하였다. 3장에서는 자기배려 개념을 통해 자신의 삶의 주체성을 되찾고 사회와 자신 간의 공간을 아우르며 사용하는 C공간에서의 움직임은 점프를 통해 틀에서 벗어나 균형을 찾은 인간의 모습을 나타내고자 하였다. 직선의 이동경로를 사용해 강한 자유의지를 표현하고, 곡선의 이동 경로를 사용해 관계 속에서 균형을 찾아가는 모습을 표현하였다. 무용수는 무대 중앙에서 권력을 상징하는 모자를 안고 상수 앞의 스탠드를 바라보는 움직임을 통해 사회 안에서 감시와 권력에 굴하지 않고 조화롭게 존재해야 한다는 메시지를 전하고자 하였다. 본 연구자는 정보 사회에서 보이지 않는 시선들에 갇혀 억압받고 획일화 되어가는 현대인들의 모습을 푸코의 자기배려 개념을 바탕으로 안무되어진 무용 창작작품「Switch on」(2019)을 통해 자기를 배려하며 자기로서 주체성을 찾고, 사회 속에서 조화롭게 살아가야 함을 전하고자 하였다.;In the modern-day society, development of digital technology led to quick delivery of information making life of people more convenient and affluent. However, technological development gave rise to the problem of invasion of privacy and modern-day people are forced to live under mutual surveillance. The awareness of being monitored brings about self-surveillance making oneself control one’s behaviors. The British philosopher of utilitarianism, Jeremy Bentham explained the society under this phenomenon comparing with Panopticon. In the panopticon society, every human becomes standardized and this creates the problem of loss of one’s subjectivity. This study was intended to inform readers of the necessity of practice of care for the self to overcome the problems of modern-day people living under the standardized codes with their lost subjectivity. Based on the concept of “care for the self” of Michel Foucault, this study analyzed a newly choreographed work, Switch on (2019), composed of three Parts focusing on the theme, content, usage of the space, scene composition, movement and moving path of the dancer and meaning of objet that deal with the necessity of which the subject considers the self seized by the invisible eyes and restores one’s subjectivity to find individuality. Part I of the work expressed powerlessness and unstable psychology of humans observed in the surveilled life. For the purpose of this, the back space of Stage Left was established as a space A where freedom is accompanied. From the space of freedom, the dancer moves to a space B where the objet desk lamp is located to portray powerlessness of the being. By doing the repetitive motion of prone position using the low center of gravity, it intended to express the human aspect locked in the inescapable frame. Moreover, with the sound effect of iron gate and chains, it emphasized the human situation confined in the society of surveillance. In Part II, it wished to symbolize a subject trying to establish his/her subjectivity based on the concept of care for the self, when the subject recognizes himself/herself shut in the invisible eyes and tries to escape from them. Stage Right was set as space B representing repression. By using the oblique lighting connecting Stage Right with the back side of Stage Left, it aimed to show the process of which the subject returns to his/her subjectivity as a human while moving from space A, the space of freedom. The strong will of refusing to be in the prison-like frame was described with the motion of stamping the feet and the flickering lighting effect to distinguish Part I from Part II. The dancer stares at the hat and returns the gaze to herself. This was intended to denote how a subject tries to put “care for the self” into practice. Moreover, the dancer crumples the hat, the symbol of discipline, and even tramples on it and throws it away. This is the expression of a strong will not to conform to the discipline. In Part III, the subject moves in space C where the subject restores subjectivity of life through the concept of care for the self and uses as a space embracing the society and the self. This movement symbolizes the human aspect with the balance sought after having escaped from the frame by jumping. The straight moving path expressed the strong free will, while the curved moving path signified the process of looking for balance in the relationship. The dancer hugs the hat symbolizing authority in the center of the stage and looks at the desk lamp in front of the Stage Right. This movement wished to deliver the message of importance of existence in harmony without yielding to surveillance and power in the society. Through a newly choreographed work, Switch on (2019) created based on the concept of care for the self of Michel Foucault, this study aimed to deliver the message of which modern-day people, who are going through standardization under the repression confined in the invisible eyes in the information society, show consideration of themselves and find subjectivity as a self to live in harmony with the society.
