모바일 웹소설의 문학성 연구

Abstract

모바일 웹소설은 중심 매체가 PC에서 모바일로 변화하면서 전 세계적으로 각광받고 있다. 모바일 웹소설은 모바일 환경에서 매체의 형식적 특징을 반영하는 서사체이다. 모바일 이야기 환경은 기존 인쇄문학의 전통적인 개념들을 파괴하면서 문학 개념에 대한 논의를 일으키고 있다. 그럼에도 여전히 모바일 웹소설에 대한 연구는 형식적 특징에 치중되어있거나 PC 중심의 웹소설로 한정되어 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 모바일 웹소설의 문학성에 주목하여 그 연구사적 의의를 밝히고자 한다. 본 연구에서는 모바일 웹소설이 디지털 매체 환경의 변화와 함께 나타난 새로운 서사체라는 점에 주목하여 모바일 이야기 환경이 기존 인쇄문학 및 웹문학에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 한다. 따라서 모바일 환경에 맞춰 변환된 웹소설을 제외하고 모바일 환경에서 최초로 나타난 웹소설만을 모바일 웹소설로 규정해 휴대폰 소설이나 PC 기반 웹소설과는 구분하여 분석한다. 이를 통해 모바일 웹소설이 지니는 문학적 의의를 밝힌다. 연구는 국내외를 아우르는 모바일 웹소설 플랫폼을 대상으로 하며 국내에서 네이버가 정식으로 웹소설 서비스를 런칭하면서 웹소설 논의가 활발해진 2013년을 기준으로 선정한다. 모바일 웹소설은 연재 플랫폼에 따라 구분되는데 기존의 커뮤니티를 중심으로 하는 커뮤니티 방식, SNS을 중심으로 하는 SNS 방식, 애플리케이션을 중심으로 하는 채팅 애플리케이션 방식이 이에 해당한다. 본 연구에서는 세 가지 방식의 연재 플랫폼 모두를 연구 대상으로 삼아 각 연재 플랫폼 별 구체적 텍스트를 분석한다. 2장에서는 디지털 서사학자 캐서린 헤일즈의 상호매개성 개념을 통해 모바일 웹소설을 분석한다. 상호매개 개념을 통해 모바일 웹소설이 기존의 인쇄문학을 어떻게 매개하는지를 밝힌다. 이는 모바일 웹소설을 인쇄문학의 연장선상에서만 조망하려는 시도에서 나아가 아날로그와 디지털의 상호작용을 주목하려는 시도이다. 모바일 웹소설은 기존 인쇄문학의 형식적 특징을 부분적으로 따른다. 신문연재소설의 특징을 매개해 특유의 방식을 새롭게 구축한다. 또한 신문연재소설의 인터페이스의 구성과 서사 재현 방식을 매개해 소설과 삽화를 동시에 제시한다. 삽화를 서사적 기호로 사용해 관습적으로 매 회의 주요 사건을 재현한다. 모바일 웹소설은 신문연재소설뿐 아니라 서사 전개 방식으로 희곡의 극본을 매개해 등장인물을 중심으로 서사를 전개한다. 모바일 웹소설이 기존의 전통적 인쇄문학의 형식적 특징을 매개하면서 인쇄 문학도 모바일 웹소설의 형식을 차용하고 있다. 모바일 웹소설에서 나타나는 인물 간의 대화를 극대화한 양식이 인쇄문학에서도 나타나고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 모바일 웹소설은 내용적으로도 기존 인쇄문학을 매개하며 장르 개념을 원심적으로 확장시켜 나간다. 이를 통해 인쇄문학과 전자 문학이 서로 상호 침투하며 디지털 시대에 부합하는 새로운 문학 양식을 제시하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 3장에서는 구체적인 모바일 웹소설 플랫폼와 텍스트 분석을 통해 모바일 웹소설이 갖는 형식적, 서사적 변별적 특징을 도출한다. 모바일 웹소설은 모바일 하드웨어의 이동성, 모빌리티를 중심으로 재편되고 있다. 따라서 모바일 패러다임으로의 전환에 따라 모바일 환경에 최적화되어가는 모바일 웹소설의 형식적 특징을 밝힌다. 모바일 웹소설은 모바일 환경을 적극적으로 활용하는 방향으로 발전하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 모바일 패러다임의 전환이 텍스트 환경 자체에도 영향을 미친다. 모바일 웹소설은 기술을 통해 사용자 최적화를 객관적으로 시도한다. 연재 플랫폼의 모바일 인터페이스를 통해 독자 중심의 사용자 최적화를 이끌어내고 이를 통해 사용자 영역을 확장시킨다. 이는 전통적인 작가 독자의 경계를 허물고 통합적인 텍스트 환경 체계를 구축한다. 모바일 웹소설은 모바일 환경을 기반으로 고유한 서사 미학을 구축해 나간다. 특히 프로타고니스트를 빈칸으로 두고 독자의 투영을 돕는 새로운 소설 형식이 발전하였는데 이를 ‘빙의글’이라고 한다. 이는 일본의 드림 소설과 구분되는 형식적 특징을 지니며 모바일 채팅 인터페이스와 서사 장치를 통해 독자의 서사 몰입을 극대화 시킨다. 이러한 모바일 웹소설의 서사 전개 방식은 독자가 이야기 내부의 서사 주체로 분하게 한다. 또한 기존의 인터넷 소설이나 웹소설이 시각 위주의 멀티모드를 활용한 것과는 달리 시각, 청각, 촉각 등의 다양한 멀티모드성과의 결합을 통해 스토리 월드를 확장시켜 나간다. 미디어의 발달과 함께 소설에 등장하는 멀티모드 양식도 진화하고 있다. 모바일 웹소설은 멀티모드성을 적극 활용해 서사적 기능을 강화한다. 뿐만 아니라 모바일 형식과의 결합을 통해 모드와 매체의 관계를 강조한다. 따라서 작가와 독자 모두 멀티모드성을 활용해 모바일 웹소설에서 다양한 시도를 한다. 이를 통해 작가와 독자는 모바일 웹소설의 스토리 월드를 확장시켜 나간다. 이상의 분석을 바탕으로 본 연구에서는 모바일 웹소설의 문학적 의의를 살펴본다. 이때 미시적 관점에서 모바일 웹소설의 이야기 개체 그리고 거시적 관점에서의 모바일 웹소설 자체로 나누어 주목한다. 모바일 웹소설은 이야기 개체 자체가 인쇄문학의 아날로그와 전자 문학의 디지털 특성을 동시에 갖는 뉴미디어 시대의 디지털 아카이브이다. 이러한 경계적 특성은 모바일 웹소설의 아날로그와 디지털 사이의 ‘혼종적 주체성’을 보여준다. 이는 모바일 웹소설이 아날로그와 디지털의 각 특성에 어느 한 쪽으로 편중되는 것이 아닌 관습성과 참신함 사이에서 진동하며 진화하고 있음을 의미한다. 모바일 웹소설은 인쇄문학과 전자 문학의 상호 관계를 통해 진화적 변화를 하며 뉴미디어 시대의 독자적인 문학 영역을 새롭게 구축해나가고 있다.;With the recent popularity of the mobile platform, mobile web novels are now spreading globally. The mobile web novel is a new type of web novel that reflects formal characteristics of the mobile platform in the mobility-based story environment. Mobile based story environment triggers a debate on the concept of traditional printed literature. However, academic research on mobile web novel is just at the beginning and still focusing on its formal characteristics or limited to PC based web novels. Therefore, this study derives literary meaning of mobile web novel and reveals the significance of historical research. This study is to analyze the impact of mobile environment on existing print literature and web literature. Therefore, this study defines web novels that appear in mobile environment as mobile web novels and excludes web novels converted for mobile environment. For analysis in this study, domestic and foreign mobile web novels platforms which appeared after 2013 are selected. Mobile web novel is categorized according to its serialized method including SNS style, community style, and chat application style. This study analyzes specific texts by studying all three serialized methods. This study analyzes mobiles web novels according to Katherine Hayles’s intermediation theory. This is an attempt to focus on interaction between analogue and digital. Mobile web novels partially follow the formal characteristics of traditional print literature. Mobile web novels create a unique narrative method by mediating of newspaper novels. In particular, mobile web novels mediate the serialization and compositional characteristics of newspaper series novels. In addition, mobile web novels combine text and images in the interface. It is a principle to show major events or scenes in the middle or at the end of text every run. Mobile web novels also mediate a play script and the narrative unfolded based on conflicts between characters. In addition the mobile web novels follow the nature and genre conventionality of public literature and expand genre classification on a centrifugal basis by combining with motif. This explains that print and electronic literature are intercepting into each other and suggesting new forms of literature that correspond to the digital age. A specific mobile web novel platform and text analysis are used to derive the formal and epic distinctiveness of mobile web novels. Mobiles web novels are being reorganizing based mobility. Therefore, this study reveals the formal characteristics of mobile web novel and also focuses on the impact of transformation to mobile paradigm on the story environment itself. Mobile web novels attempt to optimize users through mobile technology. Mobile web novel platforms’interface leads to user-centered optimization. This breaks down barriers between authors, readers and editors and creates an integrated story producing system. Mobile web novel develops its unique narrative aesthetics based on mobile story environment. One of the most representative examples is the possession writing(Bingy-text) which leaves the name of protagonist blank and allows each reader to feel as if he or she is experiencing a fictional event as a protagonist. This narrative style makes readers obtain fictional persona to immerse more. In addition, unlike internet novels or web novels the focused on visual mode, the mobile web novels expand the story world by combining various multimodality. Mobile web novels strengthen narrative function by multimodality. Through this, writers and readers expand the story world of mobile web novels. Based on above analysis, this study looks at the literary value of mobile web novels. It focuses on story objects of mobile web novels from a micro point of view and mobile web novels themselves from a macro point of view. Mobile web novels are new narrative forms in which the object itself has the analogue and digital characteristics. This bounded characteristics shows mobile web novel has ‘hybrid subjectivity.’ This means that mobile web novels are co-evolving between conventionality and novelty. Mobile web novels are making evolutionary changes through the interrelationship between print and electronic literature, and are rebuilding the independent literary realm of the new media age.
