로웰 리버만(Lowell Liebermann) 어린이를 위한 앨범 (Album for the young op. 43)의 음악적 특징 및 교수법적 제안

Abstract

Music has developed and changed a lot from the Baroque through Classic and Romanticism up to modern music. Today’s piano education for beginners and intermediates, however, is usually focused on the works of Baroque, Classic, and Romanticism but has little recognition of modern music after the twentieth century. Normally, students first meet modern music after they complete the intermediate level. In this case, they can be confused for the new musical methods and harmonies which they have not experienced. The students should experience a wide range of repertories since modern music is continuing creating new musical methods and changing itself as a result of innovative attempts. If they experience modern music when they are in the beginning and intermediate levels, they can overcome such problems and widely understand musical aspects such as various harmonies and meters. This study researched the middle and late twentieth-century composer’s (1940-1990) musical works for the young in the beginning and intermediate levels. Among them, I chose Lowell Liebermann (1961-), an American composer in neo-classicism, and studied his life and musical world. After that, I analyzed his Album for the Young Op. 43 and selected pedagogical aspects especially focused on the techniques and twentieth-century musical methods. I suggested prep studies which introduced the pedagogical aspects and twentieth-century musical methods, and offered each piece’s analysis in the pedagogical proposal. Liebermann is an American composer who is composing various musical works using harmonies and melodies in Romanticism and the twentieth-century musical methods based on classical forms and frame. His Album for the Young Op. 43 is based on traditional forms but includes modern music aspects and romantic melodies. Moreover, it has various levels. For these reasons, it is appropriate for the students who first meet the modern music. I hope that this study makes the teachers pay attention to the twentieth-century musical works for the beginners and intermediates and helps them effectively teach Liebermann’s Album for the Young Op. 43. Furthermore, I hope that this study contributes the studies on the twentieth-century repertoires which is not yet researched.;음악은 바로크, 고전, 낭만 시대를 거쳐 현대음악에 이르기까지 많은 발전과 다양한 변화들을 겪어왔다. 그러나 현재 국내 피아노 교육의 초·중급 연주 레퍼토리들은 바로크, 고전, 낭만 시대의 곡들 위주로 다뤄지는 경향이 많으며 20세기 이후 현대곡에 대한 인식도나 활용도가 낮은 편이다. 대부분의 국내 피아노 학습 과정에서는 현대곡을 처음 접하는 시기가 다소 늦는 편인데, 이러한 경우 학습자는 경험해 보지 못한 새로운 어법들과 화성에 의해 어려움을 느낄 수 있다. 현대음악에서는 톤 클러스터, 음색의 무한한 확장, 특이 조표 기보, 반사형 대위법, 비성악적 선율 등 다양한 음악 어법이 등장하며 계속적인 새로운 시도로 인한 혁신적인 변화가 나타나고 있다. 그러므로 피아노 학습자에게 시작단계부터 이전 시대의 곡들 뿐 아니라 현대곡을 꾸준히 경험시켜야 한다. 초·중급 시기부터 현대의 작품을 많이 접한다면 앞에서 언급한 문제점을 해결할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 다양한 화성과 박자 등의 음악적인 표현을 더욱 폭넓게 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 본 연구에서는 20세기 중·후반에 작곡된 어린이를 위한 피아노 교육용 작품 8개를 선정하여 각 곡의 특징을 알아보고 어떠한 현대적 음악기법이 사용되었는지 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 현대 피아노 교육용 작품 레퍼토리를 알리고 리버만 어린이를 위한 앨범의 교육적 개별성 및 효율성을 알아보고자 하였다. 본론에서는 20세기 미국의 신고전주의 작곡가인 로웰 리버만(Lowell Liebermann 1961-)을 선정하여 그의 생애와 음악적 경향을 알아보았다. 또한, 「어린이를 위한 앨범 (Album for the young Op. 43)」을 분석하여 작품에 나타난 음악적 특징을 알아보고 그 안에서 테크닉과 20세기 어법을 중심으로 주요 지도요소를 선정하였다. 선정한 주요 지도요소와 20세기 어법은 준비단계로 예비학습을 통해 먼저 학습할 수 있게 하였고 본 곡의 전체적인 내용을 교수법적인 제안에 제시하였다. 로웰 리버만은 바흐의 영향을 받아 바로크적 요소로서 대위법이나 푸가, 캐논의 모방기법 등을 사용하였고 고전적 요소인 형식을 중요하게 생각했다. 또한 베토벤의 영향을 받아 모티브의 변주, 발전기법을 이용하여 곡 전체에 유기적 통일감을 주었다. 낭만적인 요소로는 서정적 선율을 바탕으로 한 성격소품적인 모음곡을 작곡하였으며 제목을 통하여 그 곡의 분위기를 표현하였다. 그 외에도 재즈와 그레고리안 성가와 같은 선법의 활용 등 다양한 20세기 음악 어법을 사용하여 다양한 작품들을 작곡하고 음악 활동을 하는 미국의 작곡가이다. 그의 「어린이를 위한 앨범 Op. 43」은 이러한 고전적인 형식과 낭만적인 선율을 바탕으로 전통적인 요소들을 배제하지 않으면서도 현대적 음악 요소를 포함하고 있다. 또한 그의 작품은 대부분 조성적 중심(tonal center)을 가지며 다양한 난이도로 구성되어있으므로 처음 현대곡을 접하는 학생들에게 교육용으로 적합하다. 이 논문을 바탕으로 하여 교사들이 20세기의 초·중급 작품들에 대한 관심을 갖게 하고 리버만의「어린이를 위한 앨범 Op. 43」을 효과적으로 지도할 수 있기 바란다. 또한, 조사되지 않은 20세기 이후 레퍼토리에 대한 많은 활발한 연구가 진행되기를 기대한다.
