한국 웹툰의 젠더 재현 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 대중적 지지를 바탕으로 독자적인 서사 문법을 구축한 한국 웹툰이 개인의 정체성 문제를 적극적으로 탐구하며, 젠더 이슈와 관련된 담론 형성의 장으로 자리 잡고 있음에 주목한다. 한국 웹툰에는 페미니즘 담론이 대중적으로 재형성된 2015년 전후를 기점으로 전통적인 젠더 규범을 재현하지 않는 작품들이 다수 등장했다. 한국 웹툰은 웹을 통한 상호작용성과 만화 장르의 표현을 통해 페미니즘 관점에서의 독해 가능성을 갖는다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 웹툰 연구에서 가시화되지 못했던 젠더 이데올로기 문제에 집중한다. 본 연구는 한국 웹툰에 나타난 비규범적 젠더 재현에 집중하여 담론과 의의를 밝히고자 한다. 이때 젠더 재현이란 사회 담론 속에서 구성된 젠더 정체성, 젠더에 대한 관념, 젠더 수행과 관련된 인식이 사회문화적 구조물인 서사체에 반영 및 표현되는 것으로 정의한다. 이를 주디스 버틀러의 수행성 개념과 이브 코소프스키 세즈윅의 보편화 대 소수화 모델과 연관하여 한국 웹툰의 비규범적 젠더 수행이 어떤 담론을 발생시키는지를 구체적으로 분석한다. 2장에서는 섹스와 젠더 간의 교란을 중심으로 서사를 진행하는 웹툰을 대상으로 논의를 진행한다. 비규범적 젠더 수행의 중심에 캐릭터가 있다고 전제하고, 젠더 위반적 캐릭터를 생물학적 성인 섹스, 사회적으로 구성된 성이자 캐릭터가 스스로를 정체화하고 있는 젠더 정체성, 사회적 성 역할 수행 과정에서 드러나는 젠더 수행의 세 가지 축을 기준으로 ‘섹스 불일치 유형’과 ‘수행 불일치 유형’의 두 가지로 분류한다. 섹스 불일치 유형 캐릭터들은 정상화의 논리를 통해 섹스, 젠더 정체성, 젠더 수행이 일치하는 경우를 자연스러운 것이라는 인식을 강화한다. 반면 수행 불일치 유형 중 외모, 취향, 직업 등을 통해 비규범적 수행을 보이는 경우와 가상적 세계에서의 성역할 반전을 그린 작품들은 섹스, 젠더 정체성과 일치하지 않는 젠더 수행을 유지한다. 본 연구에서는 후자를 젠더퀴어 캐릭터로 명명한다. 젠더퀴어 캐릭터의 경계적 성격은 섹스와 젠더 정체성이 남성인지, 여성인지에 따라 그 양상에 있어 차이를 보인다. 남성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터의 경우 취향을 통해, 여성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터의 경우 성역할 구분의 역전을 통해 특징적으로 섹스, 젠더 정체성과 일치하지 않는 수행이 특징적으로 나타난다. 3장에서는 세즈윅의 보편화 대 소수화 모델을 적용해 젠더퀴어 캐릭터의 형상화 방식을 분석한다. 남성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터는 변별적인 특징이 아닌 인간 삶에서 잠재적인 성질을 강조하는 보편화 관점을 통해 낭만적으로 재현된다. 이들은 사회적 비난에 의해 스스로의 취향을 억압하고, 비난에 내재한 혐오적 시선을 학습한다. 그러나 이후 구원자 캐릭터와의 조우를 통해 억압에서 벗어나 함께 차별에 대항한다. 결과적으로 남성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터들은 소수자간의 연대를 통해 이상적인 안식처를 획득한다. 여성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터는 여성이 가진 특징을 강조하는 소수화 관점을 통해 양가적으로 재현된다. 먼저, 환유적 구성을 통해 서사의 맥락과 무관하게 도구화되는 캐릭터들이 있다. 이들은 파편화된 몸 이미지를 적극적으로 형상화하는 과정에서 작품의 주제를 위한 흥미로운 도구로 전락한다. 반면 작품 속 가상세계에서 은유적 구성을 통해 주체화되는 캐릭터들은 이항 대립적 사회의 모순을 가시화한다. 이때 가상세계는 억압받는 이들이 투쟁하는 장으로 확장되며, 여성 젠더퀴어 캐릭터들은 분리주의적 저항 방식을 통해 적극적으로 규범에 저항한다. 4장에서는 앞서 분석한 내용을 바탕으로 젠더퀴어 캐릭터의 형상화 방식이 가지는 담론 형성의 역할과 그 의의를 밝히고자 한다. 한국 웹툰에서 젠더퀴어 캐릭터로 형상화된 젠더 규범에 대한 저항은 현실 세계를 바탕으로 한 모의실험의 공간으로 웹툰을 확장시킨다. 젠더퀴어 캐릭터들은 토대 자체를 뒤집는 전복에 다다르지 못했으나 퀴어함을 적극적으로 의미화하고 있으며, 한국 사회의 문제와 담론을 반영, 생산하는 대안적 공간으로서의 가능성을 남긴다.;This study focused on the fact that Korean webtoon, which have built their own narrative structure on the basis of popular support, actively explore the identity questions of individuals and become a place of discourse related to gender issues. Around 2015 when feminism discourse have been popularly re-created, a number of Korean webtoon not reproducing the traditional gender norms have appeared. These works have readability in terms of feminism by interactive potential through the web and expression of cartoon genre. This study emphasized the questions of gender ideology which was invisible in the previous studies on webtoon. The purpose of this study was to explore the discourses and implications of the representation of non-normative gender in Korean webtoon. In this context, gender representation is defined as the reflections of gender identity, ideas of gender, and perceptions related to gender performance constructed within social discourses to be expressed and presented in a narrative as a sociocultural structure. With the references to the concept of performativity by Judith Butler, and the model of universalizing view versus minoritizing view by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, this study concretely analyzed how non-normative gender performance in Korean webtoon generated the relevant discourses. The chapter 2 of this study dealt with the narratives of the webtoon by focusing on the disturbance between sex and gender. Based on the premise that there is a character at the center of non-normative gender performance, this chapter categorizes the gender violation characters into two types: ‘sex mismatch type’ and ‘performance mismatch type’, which was based on the following three axes: sex as biology, gender identity as social construction and the self-identification of the character, and gender performance revealed in the process of social gender-role performance. The sex-mismatch type characters reinforce the perception that it is natural that sex, gender identity, and gender performance are consistent with the logic of normalization. On the other hand, the characters in webtoon showing non-normative performances through appearance, taste, and occupation among the performance-mismatch types and showing the gender role reversals in a virtual world maintain the gender performance which is inconsistent with sex and gender identity. This study called the latter a ‘genderqueer’ character. The boundary feature of genderqueer characters is different according to whether the sex and gender identity is male or female. Their performances not coherent with sex and gender identity are distinctive through the taste in case of male genderqueer characters and the gender role reversals in case of female genderqueer characters. The Chapter 3 applied the model of model of universalizing view versus minoritizing view by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick to analyze the way of shaping genderqueer characters. The male genderqueer characters are romanticized through a universalizing viewpoint that emphasizes the potential nature of human life, not through their distinguished features. They repress their own tastes by social criticism and learn the repulsive gaze inherent in the criticism. However, an encounter with a savior character leads them to be liberated from the oppression and stand against the discrimination together. As a result, they acquire an ideal sanctuary based on the solidarity of minorities. The female genderqueer characters are represented ambivalently through the minoritizing viewpoint that highlights the characteristics of women. First, there are characters used as instruments irrespective of narrative context through metonymy composition. They become interesting tools for the subject of the works in the process of positively forming the fragmented body image. Meanwhile, the characters that become subjective through the metaphorical composition in the virtual world of the works visualize the contradiction of the binary oppositional society. At this point, the virtual world expands into the field where the oppressed struggle, and the female gender queer characters actively resist norms through separatism. The chapter 4 clarified the roles and implications of the discourse formation in the way of shaping genderqueer characters based on the analysis above. The resistance to gender norms shaped as gender queer characters in Korean webtoon enlarges the webtoon as simulation spaces in a basis of the real world. Although gender queer characters have not been able to reach the overturning of the foundation itself, they actively make meanings of ‘queerness’ and leave the possibilities as an alternative space to reflect and produce the problems and discourses of the Korean society.
