Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the transtextuality between printed images and virual images in Augmented reality picturebooks(AR picturebooks). Also it suggests ways to construct visual images of AR picturebooks. Augmented Reality has been received attention in reagard to implementation virtual objects based on real environment and to being used in various fields such as game, education, navigation, tourism, etc.. AR picturebooks expand the narrative of printed picturepooks through virtual images and emphasize immersions of readers by adding the sense of reality. Compared to immersive Virtual Reality and interactive picturebooks, AR picturebooks contain the printed book functioning as the medium between reality and virtuality providing materiality and physical experiences. Since the study on the Magic Book which is collaboration of the printed book and the AR app had been accomplished by Mark Billinghurst, Hirokazu Kato etc. in 2001, about 16 years has passed. The interface of AR picturebooks has been changed from webcam with PC to mobile device and the interactiviy aslo has been developed in various ways from that time on. In 2017, AR picturebooks published on the market shows combination of printed contents with virtual components on displays of interfaces. Readers interact with AR picturebooks by operating the virtual objects or playing puzzles, coloring with printed books. AR picturebooks are handled not just as the book for reading also as the method of playing nowadays. However, AR picturebooks need to be reconsidered for their narratives. In spite of technical developments, the virtual images in AR picturebooks are conducted just as repetition of printed images or as method for fragmentary visual pleasure instead of having effects on the discourse of stories. So this study analyzes the correlation between prtinted images and virtual images and then suggests ways to construct AR images referencing the concept of Michel Foulcault’s simlitude. This study includes 100 scenes from 7 AR picture books published on the market until 2017. They are classified by Maria Nicolajeva & Caroll Scott’s picturbooks spectrum. To focus on the visual aspect in images, the analysis range sets bounds to characters(texts), pictures in printed books and virtual objects. In Chapter 2, this study examines each of printed picturebooks images and virtual images in AR picturebooks. Printed picturebooks images maintain conventions of forms in picturebooks and provides completed narratives without room for enhancing any other informations by virtual images. Virtual images represent the materiality of printed picturebooks as the real environment. At the same time, it represents the fictional world based on narrative informations in printed images. In Chapter 3, The correlation between printed pictruebooks images and virtual images are catergorized into 3 types. In symmetrical correlation, virtual images depict the same information with printed images. In complementary correlation, virtual images enhance and expand informations of printed images through virtual environment. Then single narrative is completed. In counterpoint correlation, there are textual and visual gaps between printed and virtual images. In this type, multiple layers of narratives are constructed. But in the majority of cases, virtual images just repeat similar informations with printed images or add secondary, rhetorical experssions. In Chapter 4, this study examines the resemblance estabilished between printed images and virtual images and proposes alternatives of visual grammars to construct AR pictruebooks images. Printed images need to provide the visual blank and the narrative possibility for virtual images. Then the virtual images might bring out narratives by variation and crossover. Consquentially, the linear relationship between printed images and virtual images is diconstructed and similitude is developed by circulation of information. This study analizes AR picturebooks images based on the correlation between printed picturbooks images and virtual images. Also, it presents the potential to construct specific visual grammars of AR picturebooks as the new genre of picturbooks.
