Abstract
;This study begins with the awareness of a problem that the description method adopted for history textbooks does prevent learners from thinking from the beginning as all are written as absolute facts with no room for further discussion. So far, in the circles of history education, people have kept pointing out that textbooks should be freed from the description method creating an absolute chapel. In fact, a lot of research has been done to improve the method of describing textbooks. Despite the research performances, however, the way of describing history textbooks has not been changed much from the past. This researcher thinks that it is because no research has been conducted to verify the effects of history description methods on learners’ thinking skills and also the circles of history education are not desperately feeling the necessity of it. This study particularly focuses on the effects of change in history text description methods on learners’ ability to raise questions. Ability to raise questions in history learning refers to learners’ ability to raise questions themselves initiatively about historical facts or topics. Questions originating from students’ independent and desperate questioning are educationally significant in that they are the results of active thinking and form strong motivation for self-initiated learning. The latest topic frequently found in education is ‘the classroom with questions’. Teaching methods have been developed diversely according to that; however, still, textbooks, the teaching•learning materials often adopted in class, take the description method of writing things like absolute facts that learners can never raise any questions about them. On account of that, this researcher intends to analyze the effects of change in history text description methods on learners’ thinking skills and more concretely on the types of questions raised by learners. For research, this author selected 24 students in Class B of Grade 5 at A Elementary School located in Seoul which this researcher is actually in charge of as study participants. They went through examinations about interest in history, schemata about different topes in the text, critical thinking skills, and critical thinking tendencies. They were provided with serial numbers based on the ranks of total scores gained in the examinations. The participants provided with serial numbers were divided into an experimental group and a comparative group through the zigzag method. Total four times in July, 2017, the experimental group learned the text developed by this researcher, and the comparative group was provided with the existing textbook, and then, they were asked to write questions about the contents they were curious about. The questions collected were classified by types grounded on Kim Han-jong’s definition of ‘I know history’ by this researcher and one coder. When the coder and this researcher had different opinion about question types, we did further discussion for judging them properly. According to the results, change in history text description methods influence learners’ questioning in the following ways. First, history text description methods influence the types of questions raised by learners. Although the comparative group raised much more questions than the experimental group, the experimental group raised more profound questions than the comparative group. Second, ‘the method of adding voice to the text’ adopted in developing the text here allows learners to understand the contents more easily. According to the results of studying the participants’ responses about the text, the experimental group says it is easier to understand the contents in all topics than the comparative group. Third, it has been found that the participants raising value judging-type questions tend to react actively to descriptions revealing the writer, particularly the writer’s use of assumptive expressions, evaluative expressions, interrogative sentences, second person markers, propositive sentences, and first person markers. It implies that when readers get to have different opinion from the description directly showing the author’s viewpoint, they tend to think critically about that. However, this study also reveals following limitations. First, only four topics were presented to the participants, so it is not enough to generalize the results. In this study, topics were chosen through the classification of topics that were familiar to the participants and not; however, in follow-up research, the categories need to be more subdivided to select the topics. If the experiment is done in that way, it will be possible to obtain enough evidence for generalization. Second, the effect of change in text description methods was examined only with analysis on question types. Currently, in the circles of history education, research on learners’ questioning is not being carried out actively. There is almost no research on the level of questioning. It is also hard to find research on the types of questions raised by learners. Therefore, this author classified questions by the types of exploration activities classified by Yu Jeong-sun based on Kim Han-jong’s definition of ‘I know history’. In the circles of history education, it is necessary to conduct research on learners’ questions more actively and also research to hierarchize their questions for further distinctiveness. Despite the limitations mentioned earlier, this study is still meaningful in that it has verified experimentally whether text description methods influence learners’ questions. The teaching․learning material that is the most powerful now in class is textbooks. Accordingly, this researcher intends to make constant efforts afterwards to alter the textbooks currently used in the field of education into something that can allow learners to want to throw questions out of curiosity to know something.
