- Abstract
According to the importance of social interaction between a human and a robot, many studies have been done on improving satisfaction of service provided by a robot for increasing social acceptance of a robot.
Employing anthropomorphism in a robot’s design and behavior is one of the effective ways for increasing sociability and social acceptance of a robot. Previous researches have investigated the impact of anthropomorphism in robot's appearance and behavior design on perceived sociability of a robot. However, limited work has been done on the effect of anthropomorphism in user control design of a robot. Thus, it needs to be investigated the impact of anthropomorphism in user control design of a robot on perception of a robot.
According to the choice theory demonstrated by Glasser, people's perception toward an object is affected by people’s behavior toward an object. Thus, as user control design of a robot could be used as a way of improving the perception of a robot, this study explored the impact of anthropomorphism in user control design on perceived sociability, animacy and service evaluation of a robot. In a 2(feedback design of a robot: anthropomorphic sound feedback vs. non-anthropomorphic) x 3(user control design of a robot: anthropomorphic control vs. non-anthropomorphic control vs. remote controller control) mixed-participants experiment design (N=24), participants controlled a robot either anthropomorphically or non-anthropomorphically or by remote controller.
When participants controlled a robot anthropomorphically, they perceived a robot as more sociable and animate, and more satisfied with the service provided by a robot than when they controlled the robot non-anthropomorphically and by remote controller. However, the main effect of feedback design of a robot on the sociability, animacy of a robot and the satisfaction of a service provided by a robot was not significant. Moreover, there was no interaction effect between feedback design of a robot and user control design of a robot. These results suggested that designers of a robot should consider not only the feedback design of a robot but also the user control design of a robot for better social acceptance of a robot.
Implication for the theory and design of user control design of a robot and human-robot interaction are discussed.
