High School English Reading

Abstract

Most Korean EFL students start studying English in the third grade in elementary school. Although many Korean English textbooks nowadays attempt to place a strong focus on communicative language teaching approaches, students are not provided with opportunities to use accurately use their grammatical knowledge in speaking and writing activities. When they do receive grammar instructions, they are often taught isolated sentences out of context (Litz, 2005, p.24). Therefore, this textbook aims to provide students with a grammar book to build their linguistic competence as well as their communicative competence through a variety of activities. For example, listening materials will be designed for students to learn both listening and speaking skills and new content knowledge. Furthermore, the reading component will help students to acquire reading strategies as well as linguistic knowledge by reading various materials and engaging in meaningful activities. This book is designed for first-year high school students who are intermediate to advanced level. They are also highly interested in improving their English skills. The textbook is also intended to be used for an extracurricular class in public high schools. The class meets four times a week for fifty minutes. The number of students is fifteen and most of the learners are females. The learners will be in a communicative class in which they are given many opportunities to participate in speaking activities which also focus on grammatical forms.
