The Scarlet Letter에 나타난 服飾表現

Abstract

각 문학작품은 작가에 따라 그 상징하는 바가 다르게 나타나지만 그 대상이 개인일 경우에는 개성적 특질을 표현해주며, 그 대상이 어느 특정시대의 집단일 경우에는 한 시대의 문화상을 나타내는 데 중요한 역할을 하는 복식표현에 의한 묘사가 뒤따르게 된다. 본 논문은 1640년대의 New England지방을 무대로한 Nathaniel Hawthorne의 소설 The Scarlet Letter에 대한 연구로써, 이 소설의 문학성을 주로 다룬 종래의 논문, 비평과는 달리, 작품의 커다란 특징인 색심상과 복식표현과의 관계, 복식의 변화에 따르는 인간심리의 문제를 토대로 하여 이 작품이 극화되어 무대위에 올려질 때 무대의상의 기본요소인 색은 각 등장인물의 개성과 작품의 상징을 살리기 위해 어떻게 구성되어져야 하는 가를 밝혔다. The Scarlet Letter의 주제적인 색심상은 묘지, 감옥등에 대한 묘사와 더불어 Puritan사회의 암울, 비정함을 나타내는, Puritan 복식의 침침하게 가라앉은 색위에 끊임없는 활기를 가지고 표현되는 Hester의 scarlet letter와 딸 Pearl의 붉은 색 복식으로 결국 집약적으로 농축된 어두움 위에 빛나는 한점의 선명한 붉은 색이다. 복식의 색과 형태는 착용자의 정신세계를 나타내는 것으로 이를 보는 다른 사람의 감정세계에까지 변화를 초래하여 인간심리의 문제가 곧 복식과 연결되어 나타남을 Hawthorne은 여러차레에 걸쳐 묘사했으며 또 각각의 등장인물이 착용한 복식에 대한 묘사에서 복식이 가지는 기본적 기능이 서로 다르게 나타남을 알게되었다. 이렇게 작품의 색심상과 복식, 인간심리와 복식과의 관계가 밀접하게 표현된 The Scarlet Letter가 극화되면 등장인물들이 착용할 무대의상은 각자의 개성은 물론 작품의 시대성과 아울러 작품의 상징적 요소를 관중들이 한눈에 파악할 수 있도록 그 색이나 형태에 있어 통일된 조화감을 가져야 한다. 이에 본 논문은 이 작품에 나타난 대표적 등장인물인 Hester, Dimmesdale, Pearl, Chilingworth, Bellingham, Wilson, Hibbins에 대한 무대의상구성에 있어 17세기 초엽 영국복식과 17세기 중엽 New England 지방의 복식을 그 바탕으로 하여 기본적인 실루엣을 고안한 위에 작품의 색심상과 등장인물의 성격을 살린 색의 구성을 시도하였으며 이 모든 것은 하나의 연극양식이 갖추어야 할 시대성의 표현과 통일된 조화에 의한 종합효과를 근거로 하였다.;Every writer expresses what a work symbolizes in a different way, but in the case of the object being an individual, he uses the description of clothing in order to express the personalty traits of the character. In the case that he deals with a group of people in a special period, he also uses the description of clothing which plays a very important part in expressing the culture of a period. This thesis deals with The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne which is staged New England in the mid 16th Century, however it does not treat literary aspects which have been treated by former works and critics, but deals, rather, with the relationship of clothing expression and color imagery which is the primary imagery in this work and mental states indicated by the changing of clothing. So on this basis it also deals with how to manage color, which is a basic factor of stage costuming in enhancing the individuality of all characters and which figures as the symbol of this work, when this work is dramatized. The typical color imagery in The Scarlet Letter is the color of Hester's scarlet letter and Pearl's red garb, contrasting with the background of sombre clothing of the Puritans which indicates the same gloom indicated by the cemetry and prison. Consequently the thematic color scheme in this work is the brilliance of red against darkness. Hawthorne's use of clothing description demonstrates that clothing can express the mental state of humans and perform various other basic functions as well. If The Scarlet Letter which intimately relates clothing, color imagery, and mental state of humans, is dramatized, the costuming of the characters must have total harmony and unity of color and shape in order for the audience to spontaneously perceive the spirit of the time, and the symbolic factors in this work. This thesis, therefore, attempts to design basic silhouettes for the main characters, Hester, Dimmesdale, Pearl, Chillingworth, Bellingham, wilson and Hibbins, based on English costumes in the early 17th century and that of New England in the mid 16th century. Also an attempt is made to use a unifying color scheme to enhance the color imagery and character portrayal of the work. All these are based on the expression of the atmosphere of that period and aim toward a synthetic effect of unified harmony which a drama style must have.
