뮤지컬 안무가의 춤 특성에 관한 연구

Abstract

In this modern society, the musical, the art for general people, can be a synthetic art in which various genres of art having the purpose of expression are congruent with a dramatic subject and making esthetic world accordant with their own characteristics. This synthetic art includes dance, music, performance, and a stage mechanism. Among these, the dance is an expressive body language with the special expression and can be the strongest deliver media in musical. So it seems very important to recognize the role and function of dance in musical. Therefore, I put the purpose of this study in making people understand the importance of dancing art area in musical, stressing the role of musical dancing directors in the present and for the future by analyzing the characteristic of dance of dancing directors through musical developing process, and finding out various expressive techniques. To accomplish this purpose, I researched the traits of representative dancing directors in musical and their works with Hanya Holm, Jerome Robbins, and Bob Fosse. And then I could find out the following characteristics. The work of Hanya Holm, 'My Fair Lady', mainly stressed natural moving with classical melody and used the stage set with English image. The work of Jerome Robbins, 'West Side Story', mixed various genres of dancing in moving with the chord of various genres including classic, jazz, and Latin music, so that it led to the successive dancing composition. And it used various stage sets with the modern and majestic background by movable and sectional ones. The work of Bob Fosse, 'Chicago' was mainly constructed with sensual moving and jazz dancing with jazz melody and expressed the atmosphere of prison by minimum set and light. The dancing works explained above took the great role to unfold the story and suggested new direction of dramatic narration through dancing with its function of creating dramatic atmosphere, making harmony with music. Like this, musical dancing directors made various dancing with various genres according to the characteristic of the works. From this research, we can see that dancing directors need plentiful theoretical knowledge of dancing and wide experience of practice. As this, we can understand that the dancing contributes to the musical significantly and also it can be the critical reason for the musical to be unique with the contents meeting modern people's various desires for art. I expect that the researches on various characteristics of dancing, resulting from the endless efforts and fresh creativity by dancing directors in the process of developing musical which is the synthetic body of various art genres, would take the important role in establishing firm status of musical as the synthetic art.;현대 사회에서 대중을 위한 예술인 뮤지컬은 표현을 목적으로 둔 여러 장르의 예술들이 어우러져 하나의 극적 주제를 가지고 각각 그 특성에 따라 미적 세계를 창조하면서 전개되어지는 종합 예술이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 종합 예술에는 무용과 음악, 연기 그리고 무대 메카니즘이 포함된다. 그 중에서도 무용은 독특한 표현성을 지닌 표현적 신체언어로서 극 전달에 있어 뮤지컬의 어떤 요소보다도 강력한 전달 매체가 될 수 있으므로 뮤지컬에서의 무용의 역할과 기능에 대한 인식은 매우 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 그러므로 본 연구는 뮤지컬에서의 무용예술 영역의 중요성을 인식시키고 뮤지컬의 발달 과정을 통해 안무가들의 춤 특성을 연구 분석하여 현재와 미래에 있어서 뮤지컬 안무가의 역할을 강조하고 뮤지컬 안무의 다양한 표현적 기법을 찾는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 뮤지컬의 대표적인 안무가 한야 홈(Hanya Holm), 제롬 로빈스(Jerome Robbins), 밥 포세(Bob Fosse)를 대상으로 그들의 안무 성향과 작품을 연구하여 다음과 같은 작품의 특성을 찾을 수 있었다. 한야 홈의 작품「My Fair Lady」는 주로 클래식의 선율에 맞춰 자연스러운 움직임을 강조하였으며 영국적 이미지의 무대세트를 사용하였다. 제롬 로빈스의 작품「West Side Story」는 클래식, 재즈, 라틴음악 등 여러 장르의 화음 속에서 움직임 또한 다양한 장르의 춤을 혼합하여 성공적인 안무로 이끌어 나갔으며 이동식, 조립식 세트를 통해서 현대적이고 웅장한 배경의 다양한 무대세트를 사용하였다. 밥 포세의 작품「Chicago」는 재즈 선율에 맞춰 관능적인 움직임과 재즈 댄스가 주를 이루었으며 최소한의 세트와 조명을 통해 감옥의 분위기를 표현하였다. 위의 작품에 나타난 무용은 줄거리를 전개하는데 큰 역할을 하면서, 음악과 조화를 이루어 극적 분위기를 조성하는 기능을 지니고 무용을 통한 극의 서술이라는 새로운 방향을 제시하였다. 이처럼 뮤지컬 안무가는 작품의 성격에 따라 여러 장르의 춤을 다양하게 사용하여 안무함으로써 뮤지컬의 표현적 기능을 확대시키는 독창적 방법을 창출하는 단하나의 요소임에 틀림없었다. 이렇듯 뮤지컬에서 무용이 차지하는 작품에 대한 기여도는 매우 중요하며, 이는 현대인들의 다양한 예술적 욕구를 충족시킬 수 있는 독특한 형태로 뮤지컬이 존재해야 하는 결정적 이유가 된다. 이에 여러 예술 장르들의 합성체인 뮤지컬이 발전되어지는 과정에서 안무가들의 끊임없는 노력과 참신한 창의력에서 나오는 다양한 춤 특성에 대한 연구와 도입은 종합예술로서의 뮤지컬의 위상을 확고히 하는데 중요한 역할을 하리라 기대 한다.
