Abstract
1. The purpose of this study was to classify and investigate the Korean Enterogona and its distribution. The materials were collected from 27 coastal seas and islands of South Korea from 1967 to 1982. 2. The materials were preserved in five percent formalin after being anesthetized with the mentol, with exception of 70 percent alcohol preservation for those with calcareous spicules. 3. The identified specimens were classified as 26 species, 17 genera, seven families and two suborders. Among them were 13 newly added to the Korean Enterogona fauna. They are as follows: Amaroucium yamazii, Amaroucium glabrum, Amaroucium constellatum, Amaroucium bermudae, Amaroucium translucidum, Synoicum pulmonaria, Leptoclinides dubius, Trididemnum savignii, Diplosoma macdonaldi, Eudistoma viride, Cystodytes delle-chiajei, Syndiazona chinensis and Ascidia sydneinsis samea 4. Among the identified 18 species (69.2%) belong to Aplousobranchiata and eight species (30.8%) to phlebobranchiata. 5. The identified species were found in three coastal seas as shown below: 26 (100%) in the South Sea, three (11.5%) in the Sea of Japan, two (7.7%) in the Yellow Sea and one (3%) in all areas of the above. 6. The following are the figures of species which are commonly distributed among the Korean coasts and the oceans: 25 (92.3%) in the Pacific Ocean, 12 (46.1%) in the Atlantic Ocean, six (23.1%) in the Indian Ocean and five (19.2 %) in the Arctic Ocean. 23 (88.5%) species were distributed in Japan. 7. Eight species (30.8%) were attached to the rock, five species (19.2%) to shell, four species (15.4%) to rock and shell, four species (15.4%) to seaweed, two species (7.7%) to shell and seaweed, two species (7.7%) to sandy mud and one species (3.8%) to rock, shell, seaweed and tube of polychaeta. 8. The recorded species of the Korean Enterogona were up-to-dated to 34 species, including those found in the present study. Twenty-seven (27) species (79.4%) were found in the South Sea and one species (3.9%) in the Sea of Japan. Of 34 redorded, 32 (94.1%) were found commonly in Korea and the Pacific Ocean.
