Abstract
학습 과제들로는 Willis(1996)와 Fotos(1998)가 제시한 과제들을 선택하였다. ;Looking back to our formal and inefficient ways of grammar teaching focused on English education in elementary school in Korea, teachers are now changing their foci to adapt more colloquial speaking methods in their English class. They hope and are optimistic that the new foci will increase practicality of English use for students. However, Korean students do not have much opportunity to use English either in or outside class. So current elementary English education does not have an effect on students' language skills as it was expected. For this reason, this study focuses on English instruction with task-based learning in the elementary school to improve students' language skills. This study introduces an instruction model and instructional tasks. The instruction model that this paper refers to is based on a model provided by Willis(1996) whereas tasks are provided by Willis(1996) and Fotos(1998). The feature of Willis' instruction model is its focus on the process of learning language and on the meaning of the language by using it through tasks. And Willis organized the instruction tasks which were characterized as listing, ordering and sorting, comparing, problem solving, sharing personal experiences, and creative tasks. Fotos also organized the instruction tasks which were consisted of communicative tasks and grammar tasks. The study was divided one unit into 4 divisions, to make these kinds of the instruction tasks more effective. And it was excluded creative tasks in the instruction. Because the tasks were difficult for elementary school students to deal with. In this paper, two classes of the 6th grade children, from an elementary school located in Seoul, were selected as the subjects to answer the research questions. Throughout 16 divisions lasting eight weeks, one class (experimental group) was given an English instruction based on the task-based learning, whereas the other class(controlled group) was given a general speech/listening-based instruction which was given by the 7th educational curriculum of English for the Elementary school. To measure and compare the effects task-based learning strategy, the two groups were tested prior to the experiment in the study for checking a homogeneity and judged to be as such. After the experiment, they were tested the effects of the treatment in the areas of the language skills and interests toward English learning. As a result, the experimental group showed higher averages in all areas of language skills (i.e., listening, speech, reading and writing) compared to the controlled group. As for the language skills post-test, the test results showed statistically meaningful differences (p<.05) in the fields of the speech, reading and writing (excluding listening). The reasons for a lack of statistical differences in the test result for listening could be inferred to the fact that the controlled class had the colloquial instruction. However, the statistically meaningful differences in the post-test for the area of speech showed that it was more effective to have speech courses with learners engaged in tasks rather than having just colloquial language-based courses. In addition, the class with the task-based learning showed higher interests toward learning English and it showed a statistically meaningful difference (p<.05) comparing to the one with the colloquial-based course. All in all, the task-based learning for elementary students was effective in improving language skills and interests toward learning English. However, there are limitations in generalizing the effects as the above results. The results of the study were restricted to the two classes of students in one elementary school with content-based instruction on the 6th grade English textbooks during a short period of time. Therefore, a follow-up research that could apply the aforementioned effects is necessary to test in various contents and in other grades.
